Core77 2012 Design Awards

Register Today

  Feature Two

Dear Core77 Fan, it is the second year of our Awards program and we want you to be part of it: the most inclusive and celebratory design awards ever.

The Core77 2012 Design Awards continues the progressive approach that we established last year (video testimonials, live jury reveals, reproducible trophy for design teams) and introduces two new endeavors—Food Design and Writing & Commentary—to our 17-category pool. Add to that an all-star global jury headed by our extraordinary Jury Captains of the likes of Bruce Sterling, BERG, Sulki and Min Choi, Panthea Lee and Jay Rogers and you can see why we're so excited about this year's offerings.

Visit Core77DesignAwards.com and register today to receive a free limited-edition 2012 poster designed by Studio Lin.

Sincerely,

Core Jr.

Features

Feature One

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE CROWDFUNDING REVOLUTION, by DON LEHMAN

Crowdfunding is radically changing the way things are made. But we need to build on what has been learned. Crowdfunding is still in its infancy and too important to the future of design for us to not be talking about it. So here is my mission: Describe what it's like to run a product design project in 2012, the early, wild west days of Crowdfunding.

Feature Two

IxDA INTERACTION12: THE STATE OF INTERACTION DESIGN: DIVERGING, by DAVID MALOUF

Interaction Design (IxD) is reaching a critical point in its history. We have spent the better part of the last half century converging. We have built our entire identity by bringing in other disciplines and practices into our fold. So it is with sadness that I announce that in the last year IxD, as a community of practice, has faced its strongest challenge to date. We have shifted from converging and assimilating to a community that is ever rapidly diverging.

Feature Three

SHOT SHOW 2012: KRISS SYSTEMS' VECTOR SUBMACHINE GUN

Firearms offer an exemplary balance of form with function, incorporating ergonomics and aesthetics to elicit an emotional response in the user. But many popular design platforms have yet to discuss guns as designed objects in their own right. Which is why this year Core77 is attending the Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show in Las Vegas. Check out our post on Kriss Systems' Vector Submachine Gun and "the Most Significant Advance in Weapons Operating Systems in More Than 120 Years."

iPhone 4S Design
"Can someone please tell me what the purpose of the apple iphone design is when in reality they need to be covered in chunky cases to protect them. I just recently got the iphone 4s and am in love with the design. Its such a shame that I have to cover it up to insure the screen will not smash. Its almost as if the design has become obsolete because its form does not insure its durability."

Unique Uses for Extrusions
"Just wondering if anyone out there knows of some really cool modular extruded products. If you have examples can you post? I am testing the extrusion water if you will and have not really seen much in the way of comercial non industrial products made with the extrusion as the main focus."

Capitalism, Consumerism, China vs. America!!!!
"I don't think I can sigh hard enough to express my frustration with the comments responding to hipstomp's article, Chinese Manufacturing Part 1 Getting it Wrong.

The companies selling these products are not idiots, the factories creating these products are not idiots. We are not drones and not a single one of us is as righteous as our rants..."

Designer and Customization/Personalization
"Have been thinking about this for a while since aspects of it have come up in a few recent threads about the iPhone (bumpers) and cars (mods)...

As designers, do you personalize/customize the objects you own? Do you have a custom skin for your phone UI? Do you have a case for your phone? Do you mod your car? Do you have all kinds of widgets on your computer desktop?

Far as I can tell, designers tend to go strongly one way or the other..."
