Expecting a tax refund this year? Protect it, your savings and your identity by keeping watch for tax season scams. Return preparer fraud. Choose carefully when hiring a tax preparer. Questionable preparers have been known to skim off their clients' refunds, charge bogus fees and attract clients by promising guaranteed or inflated refunds. Every preparer should have a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) and must enter it on prepared returns. If your preparer refuses to sign your return or will not include his/her PTIN, use another tax professional to prepare your returns. Tax-related phishing emails. The IRS does not initiate communications or request detailed personal information through email. Beware of common fraudulent emails such as a refund claim message that requests personal information or states your return is being audited and prompts you to complete forms with personal and account information. Another message also claims to be from the IRS and inquires about a recently delivered check that has not been cashed. All of these messages look legitimate, even including the IRS logo, but if you respond and enter personal information, you risk losing your savings and possibly your identity.
