Dear Reader:

Over the years, business school programs have splintered into countless formats, specialties, and styles. I fully expect to one day wake up and find every program in the world has an enrollment of exactly one-a unique educational offering perfectly tailored to every unique individual who wants one. But one program designed to help under-performing school districts is an excellent example of specialization with a purpose. And one that seems to be working.

As Alison Damast found, the partnership between the University of Virginia's Darden School and Curry School of Education trains principals and administrators to bring business ideas to bear on the problems at their schools. In eight years, it has worked with nearly 200 schools in 12 states-the first 57 that completed the two-year program saw increases in reading and math proficiency of 33 and 37 percent, respectively.

Is it a solution to what ails America's schools? Probably not. But it's a step in the right direction.
