 | | | Today's Buzz | | | | | - How many active users does Facebook really have?
Facebook says it has 845 million "monthly active users" and 483 million "daily active users," but there are concerns the company's estimates could be inflated. The network counts people who "like" content or cross-post content from other sites as active users, even though such users are of little interest to Facebook's advertisers, experts say. "I think most of us would say that the 'real number' of Facebook monthly active users are the folks who go to the Facebook website or mobile site. ... It would be interesting to know what percentage of 845 million people fits that simple definition," Eric Jackson writes. Hitting the "delete" button isn't necessarily enough to remove embarrassing photographs from Facebook's servers, the company has admitted. Because of a quirk of the network's server system, photographs can remain online and accessible via a direct link for months or years after they are deleted. Officials say they are migrating photographs to a newer storage system that will purge deleted images within 45 days. Super Bowl advertisers failed to turn their ads into online buzz this year, with many missing easy opportunities to boost engagement, according to a Resource Interactive analysis. Heinz U.K. has created a Facebook application that lets users send cans of soup to sick friends, along with personalized labels featuring get-well-soon messages. The campaign generated more than 2,000 purchases, but also drew about 16,000 new "likes," Heinz officials say. "It wasn't a revenue-driving activity, but more of a creative campaign to engage with consumers," Heinz U.K. executive Nigel Dickie says. eMarketer (2/7) | | Is e-mail a key part of your company's marketing strategy? | | | Research and Reports | | | | | - Analysts question Pinterest's meteoric rise
Pinterest is responsible for 3.6% of all Internet referral traffic -- more than YouTube, Google+ and LinkedIn combined -- according to Shareaholic's latest monthly traffic report. Still, some analysts say the network isn't ready for prime time. "There's no denying that Pinterest is fun, looks great, and a lot of people love playing with it. | | - Why marketers should face the music
Social media marketers shouldn't ignore the rise of social music sites, Constance Aguilar writes. Building playlists using sites such as Spotify and Grooveshark can humanize your brand, build local connections and help show off your employees' personalities, making fans' brand interactions more memorable. "[I]f done correctly and with pride and purpose, it can create unique content ... that gives your follower base an opportunity to indulge in something a little different," Aguilar writes. SmartBrief/SmartBlog on Social Media (2/7) - How to find Facebook's hidden messages folder
Many Facebook users read anything that arrives in their inbox, but fail to realize that some incoming messages are automatically filed into a buried subfolder, writes Priska Neely. The "Other" folder is essentially a spam folder, but Facebook's aggressive sorting system means it's worth watching out for mistakenly filed messages. "You never know what you'll find in there," Neely writes. NPR.org/Blog of the Nation (2/5) - A deadly cold front that carries BMW's brand
A European marketing trend of brands buying naming rights for weather systems has led to BMW shifting into apology mode. The so-called "Cooper" front -- which BMW paid $394 to name after its Mini Cooper line -- is tarnishing the brand's image, as severe cold weather has been blamed for more than 250 deaths so far.
