| Digital Music Access Growing Globally Licensed digital music services, and access to them, grew at an unprecedented global rate in 2011, according to the new Digital Music Report 2012 from worldwide recording industry trade group IFPI. With the arrival of established services like Spotify and iTunes in new markets, major music services are now open in 58 countries, compared to 23 one year ago. Digital music revenues grew by eight percent globally in 2011 to $5.2 billion - a faster rate than in 2010 - with digital download purchases up 17 percent. Globally 32 percent of industry revenues are now derived from digital, while in the United States digital returns surpassed physical in 2011. Despite this progress, the report also highlights the continued barrier that piracy poses to sustainable growth in the digital music market. IFPI and Nielsen estimate that one in four international Internet users (28 percent) regularly access unlicensed services. |

Download Awards Dominate 2011 G&P's Best In another sign of a growing and dynamic digital music marketplace, the RIAA awarded more download honors in 2011 than ever before in Gold and Platinum program history, and 25 percent more than in 2010, according to RIAA's recently released year-end certification tally. Adele earned 2011's top album award for "21" at 5x multi-Platinum, while Lady Gaga and Lil Wayne tied for the second highest album honor of the year: double-Platinums for their respective releases "Born This Way" and "Tha Carter IV." The highest certified song released in 2011 was Eminem's "Love the Way You Lie" featuring Rihanna at 5x multi-Platinum. Four golden acts had huge 2011 debuts as their first albums each sold more than 500,000 million copies to certify Gold: Foster the People's "Torches," J. Cole's "Cole World: The Sideline Story," Scotty McCreery's "Clear As Day" and Wiz Khalifa's "Rolling Papers." Check out the complete 2011 G&P tally on RIAA.com here. |
