Many Moves of Magnesium
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Robert Reports
When we suffer from occasional constipation, Magnesium may be our salvation. However,
Magnesium is much more that a laxative.
Magnesium is a mineral that is essential to all cells of the human body. It is the
fourth most abundant mineral in the body and is considered by many experts to be
the most important nutrient in the human body.[1]
Magnesium's function is so broad that it touches on almost every physiological system
in our body. Referred to as a 'Macro-mineral' the functions of Magnesium range from
energy generation inside the cells called the mitochondria, to the interaction of
nerve impulses and muscles in the heart. It activates over 300 different biochemical
reactions and is needed for the body to produce energy from the foods we eat. Magnesium
plays an important role in carbohydrate and protein metabolism. And it seems to
influence the release and activity of insulin, the hormone that helps control blood
sugar levels. Higher blood levels of Magnesium have been associated with lower risk
of coronary heart disease and reduced risk of stroke. Low body stores of Magnesium
may increase the risk of abnormal heart rhythms and potential heart attack. [2]
In fact, many patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) have a magnesium deficiency.
The level of magnesium in the blood correlates with the ability of the heart muscle
to manufacture enough energy to beat properly. Many disorders of heart rhythm are
related to an insufficient level of magnesium in the heart muscle. [3]
In a new research study at Tel Aviv University, Dr. Inna Slutsky of MIT investigated
a new form of magnesium L-theronate. This form of magnesium-L-theronate (MgT) effectively
crosses the blood-brain barrier to inhibit calcium flux in brain neurons.
The new study found that the magnesium compound works on both young and aging animals
to enhance memory or prevent its impairment. The findings were published recently
in the scientific journal Neuron. Furthermore, magnesium has long been know as
a key brain nutrient for optimal brain function. Specifically, magnesium improves
memory and learning by its beneficial effect on synaptic plasticity and density.
Magnesium works with calcium to modulate ion channels that open in response to nerve
impulses which in turn trigger neurotransmitter release. The most vital of those
channels is controlled by a complex called the NMDA receptor. This complex plays
an important role in promoting neural plasticity and synaptic density which is fundamental
to our memory function.[4]
Some evidence suggests that Magnesium deficiency may be an additional risk factor
for osteoporosis. Often times, we think of calcium being more important than Magnesium.
However, Magnesium actually regulates calcium as well as potassium and sodium. Research
shows that Magnesium deficiency alters calcium metabolism and the hormones that
regulate calcium. This "chain reaction" leads to a basic functional malady, often
overlooked by western medical practitioners. The fact is that bone density loss
is not just associated with calcium deficiency. Healthy bone, in human beings, requires
a host of other nutrients in addition to calcium including, and most importantly,
Magnesium, vitamin D, and vitamin K.[5] We recommend one of the best formulations
of these vital minerals from Jarrow Formulas called Bone-Up for maximum bone density
support.
The link between diabetes and magnesium deficiency is well known. A growing body
of evidence suggests that magnesium plays a pivotal role in reducing cardiovascular
risks and may be involved in the pathogenesis of diabetes itself. Many studies have
shown that both mean plasma and intracellular free magnesium levels are lower in
patients with diabetes than in the general population. Most interestingly, insulin
resistance, a precursor to type 2 diabetes, is associated with reduced intracellular
magnesium. So it may be safe to say that a Magnesium deficiency may be one factor
to consider in the development of diabetes. [6]
Magnesium is also known as nature's tranquilizer. Magnesium is important for us
to be able to relax. Too little Magnesium in relation to calcium can also make our
muscles cramp-up more easily. Most importantly, Magnesium helps in the utilization
of other vital nutrients to our health like vitamins C, D, and E, fats, calcium,
phosphorus, sodium, and potassium. Magnesium is also involved in the creation of
DNA, and the removal of toxic substances from the body. It is vital for healthy
muscle tone, bones, acid/alkaline balance, and prevents the build-up of cholesterol
in our arteries.[7] Again, Magnesium is much more important than just a tranquilizer.
We now have new methods of ingesting Magnesium which do not cause gastrointestinal
complications (loose stool). These include intravenous magnesium and topical or
"transdermal" magnesium. Transdermal magnesium therapy involves simply applying
magnesium oil directly to the skin in a spray or lotion form, or by bathing in magnesium
chloride salts. We highly recommend Ancient Secrets Bath Salts with magnesium chloride
for an excellent way to relax and 'absorb' the magnesium we need. In addition, another
convenient method to ingest magnesium is with Peter Gillham's Natural Calm Magnesium
in a delicious lemon/lime flavor. Its one of the World's best tasting liquid Magnesium
products and is highly recommended.[8]
Magnesium can be found in a wide range of food, and is commonly found in the center
of the chlorophyll molecule in most green leafy vegetables. Some of the best food
sources rich in Magnesium are steamed swiss chard and spinach, raw pumpkin seeds,
seafood, especially halibut, kelp, most seeds and nuts, particularly almonds,
and unrefined grains.[9] Due to the intense requirements for Magnesium in the human
body we would highly recommend supplementation of Magnesium in its various forms
to support optimal health.
'The Many Moves of Magnesium" is yet a clear demonstration, maybe the clearest,
of the truth of 'Food as Medicine'. Clearly, the nutrient Magnesium which provides
us 'many moves' of nutritional support, is so very basic to our biochemical processes.
