  • Phone companies lose billions as social apps take off, report says
The rise of social media applications for mobile devices cost phone carriers $13.9 billion last year, according to a study by Ovum. Many social media users use services such as Whatsapp, BlackBerry Messenger and Facebook chat instead of phone carriers' SMS services. Some experts say, however, that it's difficult to tell how much social communication is affecting the market, since social chatter could be coming at the expense of other free tools, such as e-mail, and the study does not take into account charges for mobile-data usage. • Tencent looks to woo U.S. brands to China's Weibo service
Tencent, the Chinese firm behind Weibo, has little interest in winning over U.S. social media users, and will instead target U.S. brands, experts say. Brands such as Nike, Coca-Cola, KFC and Ford already use Weibo to reach Chinese consumers, and Tencent hopes more U.S. companies will follow suit. "There is a far greater opportunity for Tencent in providing Western brands with access to the Chinese market than them investing heavily in Western adoption of their solutions," analyst Rick Williams says. • Why Google should kill Orkut before it's too late
Google is issuing special badges to Orkut users who sign up for Google+, but says it has no intention of shutting down the older network. The company wants to hold on to Orkut users in Brazil and India, but it would be smarter to simply migrate them to Google+, Sarah Perez writes. "Now is the time to strike, before Orkut turns into a wasteland of inactive accounts," Perez writes. TechCrunch (2/20) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Priests should tweet, Episcopal leaders say
The Episcopal Church is trying to persuade clergymen to embrace Twitter and Facebook. Officials offer webinars and classes aimed at helping priests learn to use the sites, and some churches have begun live-tweeting sermons. "We blew it with radio; we blew it with television. The question is whether we'll be able to make use of these new tools while there is still a window of opportunity," the Right Rev. Kirk Smith says. • Your Facebook profile could hint at your work habits, researchers say
Employers could glean valuable information about workers' job performance and professionalism by studying their Facebook profiles, researchers say. A small study found a potential correlation between personality-test grades applied to Facebook users based on their profiles and their subsequent workplace-supervisor evaluations. The Takeaway
  • Marketers search for success on Pinterest
Pinterest is potentially a valuable tool for search marketers, but only for those capable of approaching the site creatively, says Greenlight strategist Charlie Elliott. The site's code is crawlable, and "pinned" content confers authority to its original source, but brands can't simply use the site as a Twitter-style broadcast service. Instead, marketers should find ways to encourage their users to "pin" brand- or product-related content. MediaPost Communications/SearchBlog (2/21) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Why you should stop hating on social media consultants
Social media consultants should get more respect, Rick Webb writes. While it's true that there are a few phonies out there, most social media experts provide a valuable service by helping brands to manage complex, high-stakes PR problems. "It's a thankless, crappy enough job without people insinuating that you have no skill," Webb writes. The New York Observer/BetaBeat blog (2/21) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
