Will Video Be the First Major 'Out of Region' Service for Consumers?

Analysts at Yankee Group believe U.S. video entertainment providers are about to begin a major wave of “over the top” services that break out of the traditionally geography-based entertainment video business. If you think about it, local telcos have been going "out of region" for voice and data services sold to business customers for some time. 


Cloud-based app and service providers sometimes operate within self-defined territories as well, but for business reasons, not regulatory reasons. So the issue is whether over the top video entertainment might be the first major product sold out of region by some "local" telcos, specifically aimed at consumers, rather than business customers.


As you might expect, the most aggressive moves will come from upstarts, albeit in many cases “upstarts” who are market leaders in related businesses.
