| | | | | | | | | We Are in D.C. This Week For The ARPA-e Energy Innovation Summit! Stay Tuned For More Coverage Of Green Tech Breakthroughs! Here's what's been buzzing at EarthTechling this week... | Some would say clean energy innovation in the U.S. is at a bit of a crossroads. But, wandering the expo hall at the Energy Innovation Summit, you would see that a new wave of fresh college student, entrepreneur, public scientist and private sector believers don’t bat an eye as they tell you about why the new technology they are helping to develop could be one of the next big things in green technology. | “Our bread and butter is the best science and technology innovation in the world.” - Dr. Arun Majumdar, Head of ARPA-e.
| One day after the company unveiled the Model X , advance sales of the all-electric crossover SUV exceeded $40 million.
| Tesla says its new Model X crossover SUV is faster than a Porsche Carrera. The seven-seater is said to clock a 0-to-60 time of 4.4 seconds. That’s a pretty quick mover and according to a recent release from the company, it’s not the only thing that’s moving fast.
| With its statement on wind power’s progress in 2011, the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) provided a link to a verion of the press release in Chinese. That was appropriate: China added 18,000-MW—or 18-GW—of wind power in 2011, 44 percent of the entire world’s new installed capacity. The falloff to No. 2 on the list was steep, with the U.S. next with 6,810 MW of new capacity in 2011.
| In 2009, installed capacity rose 32%. In 2010, 24%. In that context, 2011’s 21% was another year headed in the wrong direction. | It takes 3.5 billion gallons of oil as well as 250,000 trees to produce the 18 billion throwaway diapers used annually in the United States alone. | Diapers are a shocking waste of resources, so many eco-conscious families opt for cloth diapers that can be washed and reused. But washing and drying these diapers in a conventional machine can takes its toll on the utility bill, and Mommy's patience. Designer Iven Dieterle wanted to tackle this need for a stylish-yet-sustainable diaper system, and a few hundred sketches later, the Swish was born.
