Now That’s A Dedicated WOW Player

Posted: 10 Mar 2012 02:15 AM PST

Getting a full back tattoo dedicated to World of Warcraft is a pretty big sign of your dedication. I mean, that means that even 30 years from now you’ll still have to prefer it over Star Wars Old Republic, DC Universe Online, Rift, or any of the thousand other awesome MMOs that will come out in that time. Otherwise, you’ll just look like a hypocrite, and no one wants that.

9 Regular People Who Became Memes

Posted: 10 Mar 2012 02:06 AM PST

I know we just talked about the Chuck Norris meme, but what about all those other people who became memes, most of whom are complete nobodies? Mental Floss has the stories behind 9 regular people who have since become famous faces on the internet, including Mason, seen above:

In November 2011, Dave, Rhiannon and their son Mason took a trip to the Museum of Natural Sciences, where they had some family photos taken by photographer Jarod Knoten. They came out so well that Dave posted one to Reddit. Within hours, Dave's son Mason was the star of his very own meme. Skeptical Baby just can't believe the things people with object permanence have to say about anything. The joke usually follows the "You mean to tell me…" format, but there are a few variations.

Of course, many of the people were not happy to know their likeness was used to create memes about people everyone hates, like suburban moms, scumbags, etc.

Attack of the Wampug

George Lucas really needs to stop altering Star Wars trilogy. I mean yes, this wampug is far cuter than the other one, but when will he learn that the fans just want the original classics?

A Kilt Wearing, Bagpipe Playing, Unicycle Riding Darth Vader

Posted: 09 Mar 2012 11:29 PM PST

(YouTube Link)

Darth Vader is a captivating individual, and when he takes to the streets playing a bagpipe version of the Star Wars theme while riding a unicycle people stop to listen, and thankfully someone decided to capture the incident on video.

Channeling the Dark Side via bagpipe is awesome enough, but doing it while wearing a kilt is what makes this Darth a true boss.

Batman Hired To Clean Up The Streets Of Taubate Brazil

Posted: 09 Mar 2012 11:28 PM PST

The Brazilian city of Taubate has hired 50 year old military veteran Andre Luiz Pinheiro to dress up as Batman and fight street crime vigilante style throughout the city.

Residents, local business owners and police are hoping that the Caped Crusader’s presence will inspire others to help clean up the neighborhood, and they want him to serve as a beacon of hope for the children in the area.

Local criminals are probably hoping he doesn’t hang them from ten story buildings by their feet. No word on whether Taubate has its own version of the Joker, but if they do he is probably the King of Carnaval.

I hope they give Andre bulletproof armor and some heavily armed backup, otherwise the mean streets of Brazil might eat him alive. Then again, Andre might end up single-handedly starting his own Justice League Brazil.

Steampunk Portal Gun Is Brasstastic

Posted: 09 Mar 2012 04:28 PM PST

A while back I posted about the Portal Gun replica being released by NECA, and it was glorious (the gun, not the article). Well, this bad mofo, built by crafty individual Batman-N-Bananas, puts that pretty little number to shame.

It’s a Steampunk styled Portal Gun, like the one carried by Chell in the Portal video game franchise, and it’s so purrrrty I just want to mount it on my wall and stare at it all day long. Here’s the ridiculously exhaustive list of stuff used to construct this beauty:

“2 antique clock movements, 1 +1/2 hangers, Metal teapot stand, plastic mechano, plumbing parts, 1 plant pot, 1 hair gel pot + various lids, plastic tub (those ones you get nuts in the the supermarket), plastic tubing, lots and lots of nuts and bolts, miniature storage box (for the battery compartment), pocket laser disc (you can get them on ebay if anyone’s interested), 3 lightbulbs, carboard tube, metal covering from an old hairbrush, AV socket, tons of odds and ends from [his] parents garage, oh and of course the usuals – milliput, humbrol and warhammer paints, hot melt glue and about 6 gallons of superglue.”

I personally wouldn’t risk damaging this wonderful work of video game themed art by lugging it to my local WhateverCon, but a Steampunk Chell costume would be pretty cool…oh wait, there she is, at the link below! And she’s got the gun strapped to her arm AT A CON!!! *gasp*

Norman Rockwell’s Star Wars

Posted: 09 Mar 2012 03:34 PM PST

James Hance is a machine that manufactures awesomeness. He does so in both high quality and massive quantity. He does so by making many mashups of Star Wars, often pairing the science fiction franchise with Winnie the Pooh. But recently, he recreated a classic Norman Rockwell illustration called “Boy and Girl Gazing at the Moon.”

Wait…shouldn’t that be Luke instead of Han?

Women Who Have Just Finished Ovulating are the Best at Spotting Snakes

Posted: 09 Mar 2012 01:52 PM PST

Now you know. Now you can be prepared — all thanks to a study by researchers at Kyoto University. They examined the speed at which women at different stages in the menstrual cycle spotted snakes in pictures:

The fastest women were those who were in the so-called luteal phase of their menstrual cycle, or the stage that immediately follows ovulation.

The study strengthens theories that we have a “fear reflex,” or an innate response to threat signals such as potentially poisonous snakes, Masataka believes. [...]

Among women, the reflex seems to be influenced by hormone levels at a stage when they could be pregnant and thus be more protective towards their foetus, the study suggests.

“It could contribute to women’s ability to increase their vigilance towards biologically relevant threatening stimuli around themselves during this period of possible pregnancy,” it says.

Chinese Villagers Bring Home Natural Gas in Giant Plastic Bags

Posted: 09 Mar 2012 01:45 PM PST

Too poor to afford heating oil, villagers in Shandong, China, go to nearby oil extraction facility and bring home some natural gas inside a giant balloon:

On the morning of the 20th, when reporters first arrived, the oil extraction machinery was operating normally, a gas canister and large gas furnace were beside the machine with no people standing guard. At 10 am, a middle aged woman brought a large plastic bag to the machine. The woman skillfully opened the valve to the gas and connected it to the bag she was carrying, the plastic bag quickly rose and grew to be a 6 meter long, 1 meter wide balloon. After about 4 minutes the bag was full.

Homeless on Purpose

Posted: 09 Mar 2012 12:44 PM PST

Being homeless is one thing most of us avoid at all costs, but not this college student. Shane Dussault, a philosophy major at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, chooses to be homeless voluntarily:

Inside one of Shane Dussault’s backpacks is a laptop, a small bag of tools, a bag of electronics, and an ultra-absorbent compressed towel the size of a washcloth. In the other is a kettle, food supplies such as olive oil, fruit, cheese and bread, and a bag of toiletries. His other three possessions are a down mat, a sleeping bag, and a “bivy bag,” which is a large Gore-Tex sack.

Shane is a U1 Philosophy student at McGill, and has been homeless since July. He lives on campus, using its facilities like most of us use different rooms in a house. He eats his meals in student lounges and does push-ups in the library. He showers at the gym and stashes extra socks in convenient hiding spots. He won’t say where – he guards his possessions closely.

He also sleeps outside year round, on campus in the winter and on the mountain in the summer. Again, for his own safety and privacy, he doesn’t disclose where. Every morning, he packs up his gear and begins another typical student day – he walks to class, takes notes on his mini Acer laptop in lecture, and logs long hours in the library to stay on top of his courses. (You can usually find him in Blackader Lauterman, the Art History library in Redpath). At the end of the day, he returns to his spot and sets up again, completing what must be the shortest commute in McGill history. On the weekends, when he visits friends or goes to parties, he’s careful not to drink too much – alcohol slows the blood’s circulation, something Shane can’t risk while sleeping outside in February. And the strangest part? He does it all by choice.

Is he really homeless or is he just camping? Link - via Metafilter

10 Incredibly Nice Robbers

Posted: 09 Mar 2012 10:58 AM PST

Personal morality varies from person to person, and even within a person over time. Some justify stealing other people’s things in their minds one way or another, but still have a an ethical line they don’t want to cross. Oddee collected stories of thieves who had a change of plan due to unforeseen circumstances, like the laptop thief who made off with data representing ten years of work for a professor in Sweden.

The professor had left his bag containing the laptop hidden behind a door in his apartment stairwell while he went into the building’s laundry room. When he emerged a short time later, the bag had gone. It was returned shortly after, without the laptop. However, a week after the theft, the professor received a USB stick containing all the documents – which would have taken several hours to download again.

5 People From History Who Were Absurdly Hard to Kill

Posted: 09 Mar 2012 09:23 AM PST

You know that Rasputin’s killers took all day and several different methods to do in the Mad Monk. A list from Cracked has five men who put Rasputin to shame in their ability to survive attempts on their lives. Consider King Zog of Albania (who was a real person; I checked):

In one instance, the assassin managed to shoot him twice from close range as he was entering the Assembly Hall. Zog let his guard subdue the dude and, unflinching, walked on into the hall and took a seat at his desk, blood spurting from his wounds.

After a while, he noticed that everyone else was understandably freaking the hell out. So he stood up, covered in blood and riddled with bullet holes, and delivered them a little shruggy speech that basically said “Yeah, this happens quite a lot. You get used to it.”

And he wasn’t even number one! Link

15 Truly Bizarre Mental Delusions

Posted: 09 Mar 2012 07:01 AM PST

When people suffer from delusions, they can take off in remarkable directions. For example, imagine not being able to trust that the people you know are really the people you know, as in Fregoli Delusion.

Fregoli delusion, which is named after the Italian actor Leopoldo Fregoli, is a condition that leads one to believe a specific person is using disguises to impersonate others you cross paths with. The first recorded case involved a female theatre-goer who believed two of the actors were secretly pursuing her by disguising themselves as other people she knew or met.

Modern technology and communications have only added to the repertoire of strange delusions. Read about 15 of them in the linked post. Link -via the Presurfer
