The Case of the Missing Giant Slice of Pizza

Posted: 17 Mar 2012 12:21 AM PDT

All right, all you armchair Sherlock Holmeses. See if you can solve the case of the Missing Giant Slice of Pizza, which walked out of a Papa John's Pizza restaurant in Lakeland, Florida:

Police say that a male suspect, approximately 18 years old, put on the six-foot promotional costume and exited the pizzeria as four accomplices, now considered persons of interest, watched the escape, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

Surveillance footage shows the suspects enter the store around 7 p.m. and meander near the door before grabbing the promotional outfit and leaving the scene.

The six-foot slice of pizza is described as having pepperoni, mushrooms, green peppers and black olives, according to ABC Actions News.

Scenes from Planet of the Apes. Glow sticks. Mirror ball underpants. Electronic dance music. It makes no sense, and yet feels right. Brad Hasse, the madman behind it, writes:

Man with Terminal Cancer Seeks TARDIS Urn for His Ashes

Posted: 16 Mar 2012 07:19 PM PDT

True geeks, Kevin “Wash” Pratt and Tashi King watched Serenity on their first date. Watchmen, Doctor Who, steampunk and conventions soon followed. Then, shortly after they married, Kevin was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer. He has endured for two years an illness that kills most victims of it within one. He is, Tashi says, “the Browncoat who *never* gives up.”

But now Kevin is in hospice, and is making his preparations. He’d like for part of his ashes to be buried in an urn shaped like the TARDIS from Doctor Who. So Tashi is asking for help from the good people of Regretsy:

I am writing to you to try and fulfill a wish of his; after he passes my husband wants to have a portion of his cremains kept in a TARDIS urn. (The rest will be shot off in rockets he has built over the years with his friends.)

This has proven to be a bit of a challenge for me. I am only 25 and have not been able to work for the past two years to be his full-time caregiver; so hiring someone to make a custom urn is a bit out of my price-range.

Millennials: The Most Selfish Generation Ever?

Posted: 16 Mar 2012 05:59 PM PDT

In the late 80s, the movie Wall Street introduced us to Gordon Gekko, a banker whose motto "Greed is good," is often used as mascot to highlight the selfishness of the young people of that generation.

But did they get it wrong? According to a new research study, the most selfish generation may just be the Millenials:

The researchers examined survey data collected since 1975 from high school seniors, as part of the University of Michigan's Monitoring the Future project, and, beginning in 1966, from college freshmen, as part of the American Freshman survey by the University of California, Los Angeles.

Data on life goals showed a shift away from those related to intrinsic values — such as developing a meaningful philosophy of life — and toward more extrinsic ones, such as being well-off financially — over the three generations.

"Compared to boomers, millennials and Gen Xers viewed goals concerned with money, fame and image as more important, and goals concerned with self-acceptance, affiliation, and community as less important," wrote the researchers in a study published online March 5 by the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

Paintings That Depict The Wonderful World Of LEGO

Posted: 16 Mar 2012 03:52 PM PDT

These paintings by Aurelie Montfrond are like visualizations of what goes on inside a child’s mind as they play with their LEGO sets, the figures embarking on a grand adventure both simple in scope and brilliantly colored.

Terrain is simplified, elements are distorted, and yet there is a clarity of focus which showcases the figures, and the props they’re interacting with, as the most important part of each scene.

They’re so delightfully minimal that you can’t help but feel like a kid again as you peruse the images, reminiscing about playtimes past.

Wandering Minds Are Due to Working Memory Capacity

Posted: 16 Mar 2012 03:41 PM PDT

You're going about your business, when all of the sudden your mind wanders ... what just happened? Studies have shown that our minds wander half the time we're doing something.

A new study suggests the reason behind wandering minds: it's all about your working memory capacity.

The researchers asked volunteers to perform one of two simple tasks -- either pressing a button in response to the appearance of a certain letter on a screen, or simply tapping in time with one's breath -- and compared people's propensity to drift off.

"We intentionally use tasks that will never use all of their attention," Smallwood explains, "and then we ask, how do people use their idle resources?"

Throughout the tasks, the researchers checked in periodically with the participants to ask if their minds were on task or wandering. At the end, they measured each participant's working memory capacity, scored by their ability to remember a series of letters given to them interspersed with easy math questions.

In both tasks, there was a clear correlation. "People with higher working memory capacity reported more mind wandering during these simple tasks," says Levinson, though their performance on the test was not compromised.

The result is the first positive correlation found between working memory and mind wandering and suggests that working memory may actually enable off-topic thoughts.

"What this study seems to suggest is that, when circumstances for the task aren't very difficult, people who have additional working memory resources deploy them to think about things other than what they're doing," Smallwood says.

Eau de Pope: Cologne Designed Just for The Pope

Posted: 16 Mar 2012 02:11 PM PDT

Does the Pope smell good? That's like asking the question whether he's Catholic - of course he smells good, thanks to a custom cologne developed just for him:

The cologne is meant to reflect the German pontiff's love of the forests and animals in his native Bavaria, as well as peace and tranquillity. It is infused with lemon tree blossom and the smell of Spring grass.

Ms Casoli, from Reggio Emilia in northern Italy, said it was hard to come up with a scent that faithfully reflected the Pope's personality and theological outlook, and she nearly pulled out of the project.

"Then I realised that an essence like this had to have at its core something pure and clean, recalling the idea of peace," she told Il Messagero newspaper.

"I thought of the smells the Pope would smell when praying at the Grotto of Lourdes," she said.

Real Life Tom and Jerry

Posted: 16 Mar 2012 12:19 PM PDT

It's like Tom and Jerry but in real life! Photographer Malcolm Case-Green snapped this photo of a tiny mouse that doesn't take kindly to being bullied:

Looking like a scene from a Tom and Jerry cartoon, the fight saw 'Jerry' escaping under the fence and back into the woods where 'Tom' had earlier caught him.

The cat had brought the mouse into a garden in Reigate, Surrey, hoping to spend the afternoon chasing him before snacking on the little critter. But he bit off more than he could chew when the mouse turned on him in a battle to survive.

Stephanie Evans said she came outside and saw the mouse in the cat's mouth. He put the mouse down and instead of running away the mouse just fronted him. The cat was so shocked he just stood there. She says she thinks they must have tussled for about 10 minutes, before the little mouse disappeared under the fence.

A neighbour later found the mouse in his greenhouse. He said "he refused to run off. He was probably waiting patiently to smash a flower-pot over the cat's head!"

Tick Says Hello from Inside a Scanning Electron Microscope

Posted: 16 Mar 2012 11:17 AM PDT

Tick: it takes a licking, and keeps on ... well, ticking, I suppose.

A Japanese researcher found out by accident how hardy ticks can be: they survive being stuffed in a vacuum and bombarded by electrons inside a scanning electron microscope:

Yasuhito Ishigaki from Kanazawa Medical University discovered the tick’s extreme endurance by accident, when he found the animals inside drying chambers, connected to a vacuum pump. Even after 30 minutes with most of the air around them sucked away, the ticks survived.

So Ishigaki put 20 live ticks (Haemaphysalis flava) in his SEM. He didn’t prepare them in any specific way, save for softly pasting them onto some conductive tape. He didn’t bother with any metal coating, since he knew that people have successfully looked at dead ticks under SEM without such coats.

The animals lived. All of them waved their legs. That’s a clear sign of life, since dead ticks fold their legs tightly against their bodies. Clearer still, they got up and walked away after Ishigaki removed them from the microscope.

They come out yelling "Spoon!" of course: Link

Pizza Roulette: A Single, Unmarked Slice of Pizza is Coated in Liquified Pepper

Posted: 16 Mar 2012 09:15 AM PDT

Jill said, “No, John, not that slice. You want this one.” I should have known that something was wrong. Hell Kitchen, a pizzeria chain in New Zealand, now offers pizzas which include a slice that is covered with pepper juice:

The company brags the single scorching slice contains the culinary equivalent of a blast of police pepper spray.

In food terms, the heat-treated piece of pie is roughly 1,000 times stronger than the average jalapeno pepper. [...]

There's no charge from Hell Pizza for turning your dinner into a torture session — and hence their motto:

“It doesn’t cost, but someone pays.”

World Record Guinea Pig Jump

Posted: 16 Mar 2012 06:53 AM PDT

(YouTube link)

A guinea pig in Rosyth, Fife, Scotland, named Truffles took a leap into the record books in front of Guinness-appointed witnesses, his 13-year-old owner Chloe Macari, and her scout troop. Truffles jumped for neither fame nor fortune, but for his favorite snack, cucumber. The jump was measured at 30 centimeters, which was 10 centimeters more than the previous record set in 2009. When Macari learned of the 2009 record, she knew her guinea pig could jump further, and petitioned Guinness officials for a chance to prove it. Truffles now goes into the record book, and Macari earned credit toward a community events scout badge. Link -via Arbroath
