Combination Pistol/Knife Owned by the President of Peru

Posted: 19 Mar 2012 05:05 AM PDT

José Balta’s time as President of Peru ended with an assassin’s bullet on July 22, 1872. So perhaps this was a fitting weapon for him to own during a dangerous age. The French gunmaker Lefaucheux, Casimer & Eugene made this unique knife that includes a pinfire revolver in the handle. It fires six 7.65 mm rounds and was presented to Balta in a case that resembles a coffin.

Amanda McCavour’s Cool & Bizarre Thread Drawings

Posted: 19 Mar 2012 03:30 AM PDT

Sure it looks like a nicely decorated home, or at least pen drawings scribbled over a picture over  a blank room, but the strings from the ceiling reveal a much more interesting story -the furniture and paintings are all actually made out of colored thread.

Don’t You Hate It When You’re Mugged By Critters?

Posted: 19 Mar 2012 03:23 AM PDT

A man in England was walking home with his groceries when he was accosted by what might be the world’s cutest mugger. The suspect, a typical red fox, circled around the man while nipping at him and his groceries. Eventually, the victim gave in and sacrificed a loaf of garlic bread to the bandit, who happily ran away with his prize.

Viewer Notes From Videodrome Screeners

Sure it’s a considered horror classic nowadays, but that tends to be among those who are already into that sort of thing. When you show Videodrome to a group of randomly selected audience members, your reviews will likely read like those of the original screening audience of the movie. When a Library Vomits Books …

Posted: 18 Mar 2012 04:18 PM PDT

So this is what it looks like when a library vomits books. Just kidding - it's actually an art installation by Spanish artist Alicia Martín, titled Biografias, made from about 5,000 books:

The Spain-based artist's sculptural installation at Casa de America, Madrid depicts a cavalcade of books streaming out of the side of a building. The whirlwind of literature defies gravity and draws attention with its grandeur size. There have been three site-specific installations, thus far, of the massive sculptural works in this series known as Biografias, translated as Biographies, that each feature approximately 5,000 books sprawled out around and atop one another.

Martin's giant book structures give life to the inanimate objects filled with knowledge. By constructing the curving towers with a rather free and disheveled exterior, while maintaining a sturdy core, the books' loose pages are free to blow and rustle in the wind, allowing the piece to be further animated.

Stephanie at Lick My Spoon has a great idea for dessert while grilling with friends. Take a banana and slit it lengthwise. Fill in the slit with chocolate chips, coconut shavings or little marshmallows. Wrap the banana in aluminum foil and set it on the grill.

Star Wars Haute Couture

Posted: 18 Mar 2012 03:17 PM PDT

The Sith Lord has never looked this good! In his series "He Wears It," designer and illustrator John Woo reimagined characters from Star Wars wearing the latest haute couture:

"My wife and I were talking about how some of our friends look like Star Wars characters," he says. This led to a reflection on the stability of the outfits of the characters in the movies: "Darth Vader always wears black." Woo says he imagined a world where the characters got out of their ruts. "It should be a dressing revolution for Star Wars; Darth Vader has to take off his old-fashioned calculator, Jar Jar Binks has to take off his bell-bottom pants."

28,000 Flowers in a Defunct Mental Institution

Posted: 18 Mar 2012 03:16 PM PDT

When a mental health hospital closes, how do you mark the occasion? For ninety-one years, the staff at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center helped society’s outcasts. In 2003, it was time to move to a new facility. So the administrators hired artist Anna Schuleit to create an installation that would mark the occasion. Her response, entitled “Bloom”, consisted of thousands of flowers covering the floors of the old building. Read about the reactions of staff and former patients at the link.
