20 Fantabulous Hunger Games Arts & Crafts

Posted: 23 Mar 2012 05:03 AM PDT

If you haven't already heard, thanks to all the non-stop commercials and serious internet buzz, The Hunger Games just hit theaters today. In honor of what is already the biggest book/movie series since Harry Potter, here are some fun and fantastic arts and crafts based on the series.

Art:

Catching Fire Poster

I have to admit that my favorite fan art creations were those created by Etsy seller PurpleCowPosters. Just look at the simplistic design and the great use of texture on this poster and it's easy to see why.

District 12 Poster

In fact, I couldn't just pick one design from PurpleCowPosters, so I thought I'd include this design for District 12 just to show off the serious skills used in their creations. In fact, even if you don't really dig The Hunger Games, I highly recommend visiting their store where there are over 100 cool posters for a variety of movies and TV shows available for sale.

SNOW

What happens if you mix the Obama campaign posters by Shepard Fairey with The Hunger Games? You get this fantastic Snow poster by Tumblr user Pixhunter.

Gary Ross's The Hunger Games

With the subtle tree imagery in the background and the shockingly bright mockingjay front and center, this poster, by Bart Van Ackooij is as beautiful as it is striking.

Hunger Games Poster

Yes, it might look like a manga cover than a poster for the upcoming film, but regardless of what the design actually looks like, there's little debate as to the quality of art in this great piece by RatGirlStudios.

Show Them How Good You Are

Tumblr user Lawtcherson captures the true spirit of the games in this fantastic minimalist poster.

Katniss Everdeen

Maybe it's just me, but few artworks really capture just how deadly Katniss can be, but this one, by DeviantArt user Pungang, does so perfectly –even if she does slightly resemble Lara Croft in the process.

Healers and Victims

While there are plenty of fan art pieces depicting Katniss as Peeta, it sure is refreshing to see another character represented, particularly Prim. In this particular piece by DeviantArt user Jenimal, Prim is rushing to help the injured right when she hears Katniss scream her name.

Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark

This digital painting by DeviantArt user Palnk manages to not only depict Katniss and Peeta, but it also does an excellent job at hinting at the complexities of their relationship.

Hunger Games Art

On the other hand, this creation, by Noelle Stevenson, showing the pair together doesn't hint at any deeper relationship issues, but it does show just what a deadly team the two can make together.

Fashion:

Katniss’s Interview Dress

For those that really want to get into the characters from the book, Etsy seller arabydesigns has an incredible take on Katniss's interview dress as it is described in the book. The design features a number of flame-inspirations and is adorned with over 1000 acrylic gems, making it totally unforgettable.

Arrow, Mockingjay and Pearl Pocket Watch Necklace

There are actually quite a few Hunger Games jewelry pieces out there, but this one, by Etsy seller Shininggift is one of the coolest as it doesn't beat you over the head with symbols from the movie, but it still has enough charms to make it immediately recognizable to any other fan.

Hunger Games Nail Art

(Video Link)

Yes, there already is an official Hunger Games line of nail polish, but if you really want to wear your fandom on your sleeve, skip the marketing and follow IHaveACupcake's lead by painting Hunger Games art on your nails instead.

 The Hunger Games Trilogy Shoes

Artist Nanette Catigbe wanted to thank her niece for introducing her to the series with this great set of custom-painted Vans. Of course, it wasn't long before enough people started begging her to add them to her Etsy shop and now you can buy your own pair of customized Hunger Games shoes from her.

Hunger Games/Catching Fire Vans

Unfortunately, Nanette's shoes are pretty darn expensive at $180 a pair, so if you'd like to save some money and get a pair of shoes that are just as cool, albeit a little less intricate, head over to Nickinverted's Etsy shop where you can grab these bad boys for only $80.

Needlework:

Hunger Games Arena Cross Stitch

Without giving away any spoilers, it's enough to say that Jenna Dickes put a lot of effort into this arena cross stitch to ensure that everything that happens in the books is inside her creation. She admits that the design is certainly not canonical, given that she had to squeeze everything to fit nicely in the hoop, but the spirit of the story and the events therein are perfectly represented here.

Knitted Mockingjay Pin

Technically, this mockingjay design could also go up in the fashion section, given that it is a pin, but it's the knitted design that makes the design so memorable. If you want to make your own, creator Dawn of Chicks Who Give A Hoot has added the pattern to the site's shop so you can, or you can just buy the pre-knitted version.

District By District Crochet Blanket

When it comes to great Hunger Games crochet projects, I couldn't find anyone better than Shywalker. In fact, the crafter has way too many crochet creations to list here so if you like her work then visit her post on the Craftster forum or the DeviantArt page linked to next. For now though, here is my personal favorite of her many Hunger Games crochet blankets, as it features each district, along with a picture representing their particular skill sets.

Katniss Everdeen Amigurumi

If you're a sucker for adorable amigurumi characters though, then you'll certainly enjoy Shywalker's take on Katniss Everdeen as a cute little crocheted plushie.

Food:

Cookies for The Hunger Games

There aren't many Hunger Games food projects worth linking to (yet), but Lizy B.'s cute cookies based on the books are simply too wonderful to ignore.

How many of you saw the movie today? Did it live up to the book? Do we have any haters in the audience who couldn't stand the books or the new movie?

Sweet 16 Adorable Animals

Posted: 23 Mar 2012 04:24 AM PDT

Buzzfeed put together an NCAA tournament bracket that has nothing to do with the actual basketball games, but instead pits the teams’ animal mascots against each other to rank which is the cutest. Which means no matter what team you like, you can enjoy a series of sweet wildlife photographs. The wildcats above represent Kentucky. Link

Robojelly

Posted: 23 Mar 2012 03:37 AM PDT

(YouTube link)

Robojelly, new from SyFy! That’s what it sounds like… but this is real. A team at Virginia Tech has developed a robot based on the movement of a jellyfish. They named the resulting mechanism Robojelly, and it should eventually be able to run completely on the power of seawater!

A jellyfish’s movement is down to circular muscles located on the inside of the bell — the main part of the body shaped like the top of an umbrella. As the muscles contract, the bell closes in on itself and ejects water to propel the jellyfish forward. After contracting, the bell relaxes and regains its original shape.

This was replicated in the vehicle using commercially-available shape memory alloys (SMA) — smart materials that “remember” their original shape — wrapped in carbon nanotubes and coated with a platinum black powder.

The robot is powered by heat-producing chemical reactions between the oxygen and hydrogen in water and the platinum on its surface. The heat given off by these reactions is transferred to the artificial muscles of the robot, causing them to transform into different shapes.

Can you guess who sponsors this research? That’s right, the U.S. Navy. Link -via Metafilter

Cardboard Hellboy And Abe Sapien Costumes

Posted: 23 Mar 2012 12:06 AM PDT

These delightfully square versions of Hellboy and Abe Sapien look so cool that I’m sure they were a big hit at whatever Con they were attending when these pictures were taken.

From the comic book inspired detail lines, to the bold colors and painstaking attention to detail, these guys really stand out, and when they’re done with the costumes they can use them to store all their old junk!

SXSW Wants to Turn People Into Machines

Posted: 23 Mar 2012 12:02 AM PDT

First, Zeon told us about the homeless people serving as wifi hotspots, now there are reports that FedEx hired people to serve as power chargers. Sure it’s convenient for festival attendees, but to me, it sounds like another piece of evidence that the machines are trying to take over humans.

Political Posters That Urge You To Vote For The Villain

Posted: 22 Mar 2012 11:47 PM PDT

Seeing as how we are in an election year, it’s not surprising that candidates are coming out of the woodwork and declaring their bid for various offices.

But with all the problems we’re having in the world, financially and otherwise, wouldn’t it be nice to elect someone who is up front about being full of bad intentions?

At least you know what you’re getting into when we elect a supervillain, and who knows? Maybe they’ll actually clean up their act just long enough to put this country back on track.

Peruse the assortment of election posters at the Comics Alliance link below and make up your own mind about electing a self-proclaimed villain for public office.

The Delightfully Strange Sculptures Of Littlewhitehead

Posted: 22 Mar 2012 11:13 PM PDT

The artistic duo known as Littlewhitehead have some strange thoughts behind the sculptures in their collections. Their unique view of the world is darkly comical, which only adds to the disturbing nature of what each piece has to say to the viewer.

I’ve subtitled the above image “I’ve fallen and I can’t reach my juice box”, but the piece is actually called “We’re all going to lose”, which is kind of like a kick to the face of any whimsical ideas you may have had about the piece.

You can check out more of Littlewhitehead’s sculptural oddities at the Beautiful/Decay link below, along with a rather insightful video where the duo discuss “various pieces and their creative process”. I’m just glad they don’t use real people in any of their works.

This Image Is Made with 500,000 Fish Hooks

Posted: 22 Mar 2012 06:24 PM PDT

This amazing picture by Cuban artist Yoan Capote looks like a black and white photo, but the ragged-looking surface is actually made out of half a million fish hooks. Capote and thirty assistants spent six months nailing them into place on plywood. Don’t touch them! The barbs are exposed. That’s because Capote wants observers to experience the “sensorial power and aggressiveness of the objects in its sculpture condition.”

Superman, Captain America and Nick Fury Take on a Regiment of Stormtroopers

Posted: 22 Mar 2012 04:45 PM PDT

No, it’s not colored in. But that’s a good thing, or else the awesomeness would be too much to mentally process. Comic book artist Darick Robertson gave this image to writer Larry Young. Young passed it on to his young son in a sweet and touching conversation, which you can read at the link.

Now in all seriousness, Superman will obviously prevail in this fight. But what about a Superman vs. Darth Vader match up? That would be a great crossover!

If you know what I mean.

No, you don’t? Well, that was one of Benjamin Franklin’s 220 euphemisms for being drunk. He published a list of them in 1737. Evolution Puzzle: Why Bad Mimics Haven’t Died Out Yet

Posted: 22 Mar 2012 02:33 PM PDT

In evolutionary biology, mimicry is what happens when an organism evolved to look like something else, usually to avoid predators. For example, the harmless milk snake look like the venomous coral snake.

Obviously, the advantage of good mimicry is obvious - but why do so many animals get by with being bad mimics?

Darwinian selection would suggest that over time the hoverflies that sounded most like wasps would be preferentially selected until a species emerged that sounded very nearly, if not exactly, like the creature it was trying to impersonate.

In contrast, the species that were poor mimics would all be eaten and die out.

The new Canadian research suggests why this hasn't happened. [...] The scientists found that the larger the hoverfly species, the closer it resembled the emulated wasp or bee. They also found that the smaller species were not very good mimics at all.

"If you are a small hoverfly then birds are not going to be very interested in you," Prof Sherratt explained.

"You are a relatively unprofitable meal and so the selection on mimicry is relatively weak.

From Rocket Science to Firefighting: Why We Should Continue to Fund Science

Posted: 22 Mar 2012 12:29 PM PDT

The left image on the top is the vortex combustion technology, developed by Orbital Technologies Corporation and NASA. In that technology, rocket fuel is fed into the combustion chamber in such a way to create a swirling vortex flow that improves the rocket engine's durability.

So, what does rocket science has got to do with improving life on Earth? Phil Plait of Bad Astronomy pointed out in his post "THIS is why we invest in science. This.", things we learn in science can have real-life applications that are quite unexpected.

In this case, knowledge from the rocket propulsion system let engineers develop a new firefighting system:

One series of tests using empty houses at Vandenberg Air Force Base compared an HMA system with a 20-gallon-per-minute, 1,400 pound-per-square-inch (psi) discharge capability (at the pump) versus a standard 100-gallon-per-minute, 125 psi standard hand line—the kind that typically takes a few firemen to control.

The standard line extinguished a set fire in a living room in 1 minute and 45 seconds using 220 gallons of water. The HMA system extinguished an identical fire in 17.3 seconds using 13.6 gallons—with a hose requiring only one person to manage.

Phil argues:

In other words, this new system put out a fire more quickly, using less water, and — critically — with fewer firefighters needed to operate the hose. This frees up needed firefighters to do other important tasks on the job, and therefore makes fighting fires faster and safer.

There is no way you could’ve predicted beforehand that investing in NASA would have led to the creation of this specific innovation in life-saving technology. But it’s a rock-solid guarantee that investing in science always leads to innovations that have far-ranging and critical benefits to our lives.

If for no other reason that’s why we need to invest in science: in NASA, in NSF, in NOAA, and all the other agencies that explore the world around us. It’s for our own good. And it always pays off.

Plus, you've got to admit, Space Shuttle launches are amazing!

Manhattan’s Modest Art Collectors

Posted: 22 Mar 2012 10:40 AM PDT

Herb and Dorothy Vogel of New York City are not rich, but they have an amazing collection of art. Herb retired after years of sorting mail at the Manhattan Post Office. Dorothy was a librarian. They lived simply and spent all the extra money they could come up with on artworks, for their entire married life, because that is their passion.

In 1992, after Dorothy retired, the Vogels donated their ever-expanding collection to the National Museum of Art, in Washington, because they had run out of space for it. ‘We’re not ones to throw things out,’ says Dorothy, glancing around, ‘and we couldn’t fit another toothpick in.’ According to Chuck Close, a friend of the couple who is represented in their collection, the Vogels had so much art stuffed under their bed that it had risen off the floor.

The museum had no idea of the extent of the Vogels’ hoardings. It took three months and five 40ft lorries to pack up and remove more than 2,500 pieces from their tiny apartment: priceless work by Sol LeWitt, Donald Judd, Carl Andre, Richard Long, Julian Schnabel, Jeff Koons, and Richard Tuttle, among others. Only three works remained in situ, because they were site specific or too fragile to move (the National Gallery has since been back to collect one of these, a piece made out of yoghurt).

The art handlers took pride in their project of restoring the Vogels to what anyone else might call normal life: a bare apartment with space for regular furniture. There is a photo of the couple taken after the removal process; they are holding their cats, smiling, posing against a freshly painted white wall. However, this tabula rasa was short lived and the couple soon refilled the apartment. To thank them for their generous bequest, the museum had given them a small annuity, and the Vogels used this, and what was left from their pensions, to buy yet more art, which will also be donated to the National Gallery; they now own more than 4,000 works. They were too addicted to collecting to stop.

Read more about the Vogels and their art collection in an extensive article at The Telegraph. Link -Thanks, Marilyn Terrell!
