Walking Across The Wal-Mart Parking Lot When….WTF?!

Posted: 07 Apr 2012 04:45 AM PDT

Either the owner of this car is in a competition to see who can eat the most McDonald’s, they’re trying to build a passenger out of used fast food wrappers so they can drive in the carpool lane, or they’re starring in a new reality show called Car Hoarders. Whatever the case, this person obviously knows how to live the high life!

I bet there’s a Burger King party happening in the back seat, and the two are kept separate so another Burger War doesn’t take place between the Brits and the good ol’ U.S. of A. Go Team Ronald!

Photoshopped Image Of Russian Patriarchate

Posted: 07 Apr 2012 03:53 AM PDT

Apparently, the Russian Orthodox Church doesn’t want the world to know that they’re shot callers and big ballers, so they decided to manipulate the image above in order to remove the $30,000 watch from the Patriarchate’s wrist.

Russian knowledge of Photoshop must not be up to snuff, because they forgot to remove the reflection of the watch from the table, so the controversy ensued.

When asked for an explanation, the watch’s existence was denied and the Church vowed to look into this “technical mistake”. The real mistake is that the Patriarchate is forced to greet the public without his pimp chalice and medallion chain!

Life Size Figures Made Out Of Trash

Posted: 07 Apr 2012 02:51 AM PDT

If you’ve ever called someone a “piece of trash”, wait until you see these sculptures of trashy people made by Will Kurtz, and by trash I mean they’re made out of garbage for a truly realistic look.

Will obviously drew some inspiration from the website People Of Wal-Mart, and from people he spots lurking around the streets of New York on his journeys through the urban jungle.

The sculptural versions of these trashy people are a bit scary, and they look as if they’ve just crawled out of the nearest dumpster, but I’m glad Will has so many colorful people around him to inspire some truly great works!

7 Stories of 7 Incredible Siamese Twins

Posted: 07 Apr 2012 02:06 AM PDT

Just about everyone is familiar with Chang and Eng as they are by far the most famous of all Siamese twins, but there’s still probably plenty of information you didn’t know about these two brothers. For example, the term “Siamese twins” was actually based on them. There’s also a chance you know someone related to them:

The twins adopted the last name Bunker, bought a plantation and slaves, and married two sisters, Adelaide Yates and Sarah Anne Yates. Chang had 10 children, Eng 11 or 12, and today the twins' descendants are said to number more than 1,500, among them sets of non-conjoined twins.

Learn more about the brothers and about 6 other pairs of conjoined twins over at Environmental Graffiti.

Keep Your Kittens Locked Up This Sunday

Posted: 07 Apr 2012 12:51 AM PDT

Have you ever wondered why your kitty is so crazy? It might be the nature of cats, or it could just be because the Easter Bunny messed with him one too many times. That’s why you really ought to keep your little furball locked up this Easter. After all, even if he doesn’t take out the bunny like Mittens did, the Easter Bunny could just as easily torment your kitten even more, making him even more insane.

The Newest B-52 Turns 50 Years Old This Year

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 08:20 PM PDT

The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress, a strategic bomber used by the US Air Force, first flew in 1952. The last one produced, Tail No. 1040, left the factory in October, 1961. It and nearly a hundred others are still in service:

"I don't think anyone really knew this was going to be the last B-52 ever made," said Robert Michel, the 5th Bomb Wing historian. "They expected it to be in service for probably about 20 years, (not close to) a hundred."

With Tail No. 1040 and the rest of the Air Force's B-52s scheduled to keep flying through 2040, there are several reasons why the B-52 has been flying for more than 50 years.

"I don't think you can get a bomber that could replace the B-52 that will do everything the B-52 does," Michel said.

That's because the B-52 can perform nuclear deterrence and conventional operations, fly at both high and low altitudes while carrying nuclear and conventional bombs, cruise missiles or aerial mines, he said. "It's like the Swiss Army bomber."

New Clamp for Traumatic Wounds Inspired by a Hairclip

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 03:05 PM PDT

Dr. Dennis Filips, a retired surgeon in the Canadian Navy, saw a lot of traumatic wounds in Afghanistan. He figured that there had to be a better way for troops to stop blood loss immediately after a wound. So he developed a hinged clamp that snapps over a wound. Needles anchor it in place as the clamp holds the wound together and reduces blood flow. Watch a simulation video at the link.

Inside the Peeps Factory

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 03:04 PM PDT

The New York Times has a photo gallery in their Easter weekend magazine featuring a peep inside the Peeps factory. See the parade of marshmallow chicks on their way to a store near you!

It takes six minutes to make a Peep. Ingredients are mixed, air is injected and the emerging Peep is blasted with a sugar shower and decorated with two tiny eyes made of edible wax. But for such an innocent marshmallow-and-sugar pastel candy, the Peep is surprisingly polarizing. Peeps hater Web sites show pictures of Peeps dipped in liquid nitrogen and smashed with hammers. Admirers dress them in costumes and arm them with plastic swords. Matthew Beals, director of the 2009 documentary ''The Power of the Peep,'' said their appeal endures because ''they coexist as both cute and horrible.''

Print Encyclopedias Selling Like Hotcakes

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 01:02 PM PDT

When Encyclopedia Britannica announced they would end the production of print encyclopedias, it spurred a flurry of sales. Of the 4,000 sets of the 2010 edition they had in stock, all but 800 have been purchased.

“We were averaging about 60 sets a week and the next thing we knew, we were selling 1,050 a week,” Britannica spokesman Peter Duckler said Thursday. “When people thought they were going to be around forever there was no rush to buy one and then suddenly, boom, and now there is a scarcity and it’s a collector’s item.”

Company officials estimate that the remaining encyclopedias will be sold by the end of this month. Link -via Consumerist

How the Mariana Trench Became Earth’s Deepest Point

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 12:00 PM PDT

James Cameron’s dive to the deepest part of the Mariana Trench took him seven miles below sea level. Why is this abyss so deep? There are at least three contributing reasons that come together.

One reason the Mariana Trench is so deep, he added, is because the western Pacific is home to some of the oldest seafloor in the world—about 180 million years old.

Seafloor is formed as lava at mid-ocean ridges. When it’s fresh, lava is comparatively warm and buoyant, riding high on the underlying mantle.

But as lava ages and spreads away from its source, it slowly cools and becomes increasingly dense, causing it to settle ever lower—as is the case with the Mariana Trench.

Why Some Civil War Soldiers Glowed in the Dark

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 09:59 AM PDT

Thousands of soldiers were wounded during the Battle of Shiloh on April 6, 1862 -150 years ago today. Medics on both sides were overwhelmed, and some of those wounded had to wait quite some time for treatment.

Some of the Shiloh soldiers sat in the mud for two rainy days and nights waiting for the medics to get around to them. As dusk fell the first night, some of them noticed something very strange: their wounds were glowing, casting a faint light into the darkness of the battlefield. Even stranger, when the troops were eventually moved to field hospitals, those whose wounds glowed had a better survival rate and had their wounds heal more quickly and cleanly than their unilluminated brothers-in-arms. The seemingly protective effect of the mysterious light earned it the nickname "Angel's Glow."

In 2001, almost one hundred and forty years after the battle, seventeen-year-old Bill Martin was visiting the Shiloh battlefield with his family. When he heard about the glowing wounds, he asked his mom – a microbiologist at the USDA Agricultural Research Service who had studied luminescent bacteria that lived in soil – about it.

"So you know, he comes home and, 'Mom, you're working with a glowing bacteria. Could that have caused the glowing wounds?'" Martin told Science Netlinks. "And so, being a scientist, of course I said, 'Well, you can do an experiment to find out.'"

And that's just what Bill did.

Martin and a friend worked on the question and their research eventually won a science fair competition. Read about their findings at mental_floss. Link

Romanian ATMs Baffle Customers

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 08:00 AM PDT

One street in the city of Timisoara, Romania, has two automatic teller machines that are all but unusable. One is in a wall six feet off the ground, requiring customers to bring their own step stools in order to use it. The other, just across the street, is so low that customers must kneel on the sidewalk to use it. A consumer group representative said,

“The high one was supposed to have a staircase leading to it but the bank forgot to get planning permission. And the bank with the low ATM say it had to go there because they are in a listed building and the only
access point was a basement window.

“These are just excuses for treating their customers without respect,” said one.

The oddities may be blamed on bureaucracy and architecture, but it boils down to bad planning on the part of the banks. Link -via Arbroath
