Photographs of the Titanic

Posted: 08 Apr 2012 05:00 AM PDT

Here is the last known photograph of the RMS Titanic, on the morning of April 11th, 1912. It was taken by photographer and later priest Francis Browne, who traveled only from Southampton to Cork on the ship. Passengers had to be ferried away from the enormous boat, as the dock had no accommodations for a ship that size. That fact gave Browne a chance to get the entire ship in a frame just before it started across the Atlantic. Browne took many other pictures of his one-day stay aboard the Titanic. See eleven of them at Buzzfeed. Link

A Hole in the Sky

There’s a crack in the universe, and it’s growing.

Oh, there’s no evidence that Japanese photographer Yochai Matos was thinking of Doctor Who when he made this image, but that’s what it reminded me of.

How did Matos do it? With a carefully arrangement of florescent bulbs. You can find daylight pictures of his installation at the link.

Frito Pie, As Served in the Dime Store That Invented It

Posted: 07 Apr 2012 07:45 PM PDT

Frito pie, a delicacy of the American Southwest, consists of Frito chips, chili, cheese, beans and onions. Its origins are a mystery, but one legend places its birth at a Woolworth’s lunch counter in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Woolworth’s isn’t around anymore, but a dime store still resides at that location. It serves Frito pie at a snack bar in the back, with the ingredients poured into a slit open Frito bag.

Look at that picture. You’re already getting hungry, aren’t you?

Humans Made Fire Earlier than We Thought

Posted: 07 Apr 2012 01:00 PM PDT

Scientists have been speculating and arguing about when hominids mastered the art of producing fire for a long time. Estimates ranged from a few hundred thousands years ago to two million years ago. But now hard evidence of a one-million-year-old cave fire has emerged.

The new evidence comes from South Africa's Wonderwerk Cave. Archaeological investigations there in the 1970s through 1990s turned up Acheulean tools—stone handaxes and other implements that were likely produced by Homo erectus. In 2004, Francesco Berna of Boston University and his colleagues began new excavations. They found several signs of fire, including tiny charred bone fragments and ash from burned plants. They also found ironstone—which the hominids used to make tools—with telltale fractures indicative of heating. Using a technique called Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy, which examines how a sample absorbs different wavelengths of infrared light, the team determined the remains had been heated to more than 900 degrees Fahrenheit, with grasses, leaves or brush used as fuel.

The shape of the bone fragments and the exceptional preservation of the plant ash suggest the materials were burned in the cave—not outside and then transported in by water, the team reports this week in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Spontaneous combustion of bat guano was also ruled out (apparently this sometimes happens in caves). That left hominids as the most likely source of the fire.

The age of hominid fire is important, because fire is a crucial ingredient of the theory that humans developed bigger brains due to eating cooked food (previously at Neatorama). Read more on this discovery at Smithsonian’s Hominid Hunting blog. Link

How the Titanic Sank

Posted: 07 Apr 2012 12:00 PM PDT

(YouTube link)

James Cameron works with NatGeo to recreate the movements of the Titanic as she sank in real life, in this clip from Titanic: The Final Word With James Cameron, which will air Sunday night on the National Geographic Channel. It may not be as exciting as his movie version, but accuracy has its place. So Cameron has managed to promote his film in theaters and a TV show in one fell swoop.

Fumblerules of Grammar

Posted: 07 Apr 2012 07:00 AM PDT

Writer William Safire collected contradictory grammar rules from various sources and published 36 of them in his New York Times column in 1979. Eighteen more were added when he published the 2002 book Fumblerules: A Lighthearted Guide to Grammar and Good Usage. Here’s a sample:

8. Do not put statements in the negative form.
9. Verbs has to agree with their subjects.
10. No sentence fragments.
11. Proofread carefully to see if you words out.

You’ve probably received these in an email forward at one time or another, so now you know where they come from and how old they are. Read the rest at Lists of Note. Link -via the Presurfer

This Week at Neatorama

Posted: 07 Apr 2012 06:00 AM PDT

The Jewish feast of Passover, or Pesach, began last night, and will last until sundown on April 14th. The Christian Holy Week continues with Easter tomorrow. The fact that the holidays often land so close together on the calendar is not coincidence if you know the events of the Bible. You may be enjoying your holiday weekend in religious contemplation, joyous celebration, or just relaxing with family. Then again, if you are Mom, you may be busy preparing Seder dishes, dying eggs, getting the family’s clothing ready, and all those other traditional preparations that make holidays special. At least you can make some time to catch up on the wonderful things we’ve brought you this week at Neatorama.

Jill Harness put together a list of 14 Wonderfully Geeky Easter Eggs.

She also rounded up 10 Awesome Office Pranks For Late April Fool’s Day.

Eddie Deezen gave us the story behind The Cover Art of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Postcards From The Edge (Of America): The Adventures of Lewis & Clark came from mental_floss magazine.

Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader brought out the 12-year-old in all of us with Heh, Heh, Heh. You Said "Uranus."

In the What Is It? game this week, the unidentified object is now identified as a billiards pocket (found on eBay). The first correct answer came from Berhard, who wins a t-shirt! Of many funny answers, the funniest was from Lord_Dissident, who said,

It is actually the iron mask that was used to hide the face of the man in the iron mask. The front was opened only at feeding time, food was placed into the bowl, and it was slammed shut again. That is why he never ate soup again after he got out of that mask.

That certainly deserves a t-shirt! Find out the purposes of all this week's mystery items at the What Is It? blog.

The Decipher the Doodle contest at NeatoBambino has wrapped up, and you can get the complete story of what the doodle was all about in the followup post. Congratulations to Cana, whose answer was closest to correct, and to KatieJ, who had the funniest wrong answer. They win t-shirts from the NeatoShop!

NeatoBambino will certainly have more contests when the young artists come up with appropriate doodles, but meanwhile, check out Neatorama’s auxiliary site for fun stuff to do with your kids, neat stuff to read about babies and children, and adorable yet entertaining videos!

The most-commented-on post this week was Driver Attempts Hit and Run, Gets Blocked in By Other Drivers, because bike traffic will always draw comments. Coming in second was 7 Ridiculously Outdated Assumptions Every Movie Makes followed by Where Would You Go? The photo titled Live Long and Prosper would have ranked here, but I had to delete quite a few comments. Remember, we love a lively discussion, but anyone who insults or attacks another commenter will be removed.

When you’re caught up on everything from this week, you can access past feature articles at The Best of Neatorama. And have a blessed holiday weekend!

The Official Winners of the Pi Day Contest

Posted: 07 Apr 2012 05:28 AM PDT

Last month, I put up a post about the great geeky pies made for National Pi Day that included the one above that I speculated should win this year’s contest. Well, the results have finally been released and sure enough, Shannon N.’s creation won. You can check out the rest of the winners over at Serious Eats.

And remember, just because Pi Day is past doesn’t mean it’s too late to eat some delicious pies!
