The Gazelle - An Explanation

We decided it was about time to make our newsletter a bit more official.  I wanted to name it “The Merch Gazette,” but Jerry suggested “The Gazelle” instead, because who knows why.  And then Erika really liked “The Gazelle” because it meant she got to draw an exotic beast.  Outvoted.  So, Gazelle it is.  The logo is pretty great though, it's got the eye on there, and the word “gazelle” has its roots in a form of ancient Arabic love poetry.  That’s KIND of like a newsletter, right...?  So, I’m on board, now.

And good thing, because there is a lot to tell you, and this is the perfect vessel for delivery.  We’ve a new shirt, a special version of an older shirt and, of course, the return of First Party! You can check out the tees below.  The glow-in-the-dark Defense Against the Dark Arts shirt in Slytheresque Green was wildly popular at PAX East. I’ve rescued a few for the online store and I’m telling you--oh valued newsletter subscriber--about them FIRST.  Grab one if you want. Indeed, grab ANY t-shirt this month and you can get 10% off with the secret code “G4Z3LL3”.  Note that this code will work ONLY on men’s and women’s t-shirts, hoodies and hats but NOT on… well…

First Party.  It’s back.  The new polos are stronger and softer than before and more importantly, they’re pre-shrunk and available in new colors.  Based on pre-sales and upgrades, you guys like the new colors.  I am glad. We’re all caught up on pre-orders now, as well as the upgrades we‘ve received to date, so perhaps you’re reading this very newsletter whilst well-heeled in a Slate Blue v2.0 polo.  If so, thanks!  If not, we sell those.

The polos are not the ONLY First Party items available.  They have been joined by a comfortable, 100% cotton-yarn sweater.  It is a lightweight force-field that we created, hood-and-all, with those slow-starting, oft-damp spring and autumn morning commutes in mind.  If you’ve got one of those, or just a chilly office, I think that you’ll find these First Party v1.0 sweaters to be a perfect fit for what I suppose would be the modern version of the Cloak Slot in your wardrobe.

PA Q & A

Hey Hey Hey! What is Going on Here?!?

I  borrowed a question from Saved By The Bell this time. But in the future this section will be reserved for answering questions from you guys.  It won’t always be me answering.  It could be anyone on the Penny Arcade team—whoever can answer your question best.  And he or she who answers will do so here.  In this section.

You can Tweet your questions at me (@retnus) or email them to merch@penny-arcade.com. I will pick one question (a frequently asked or particularly poignant question) to address each month in this space.

Behind The Scenes of The First Party Shell

This section of The Gazelle is like a “Developer’s Diary” for fabulous merchandise.  If you are the type of person who delights as much in the making of the sausage as in the flavor, then this section will deliver the frank and chilling details you crave.  I can carry on an incredibly detailed conversation about cotton, if you so require.  This time, we’ll discuss the upcoming First Party Shells.

I’ve already received a host of enquiries about these, but just to make sure we’re all on the same page here, the First Party Shell is a jacket that we’ve been working on for over a year now.  We’re really happy with the materials and the design and it was scheduled for an April launch this year.  But our plans were foiled by the tiniest of details: The zipper.  Specifically, the little piece that actually moves up and down the jacket and locks/unlocks the zipper teeth. It’s called the “slider,” and our sliders were too soft.  So, they would bend over time and eventually stop working, particularly for those with an "extreme" zipping technique.

We are now in the process of replacing all of the sliders with much, much better materials; and lest you think that our lives are glamorous ones, we’ll be doing those replacements by hand, ourselves, and sometimes you get pinched.  It's incredibly hardcore.  We'll fix all the zippers one at a time until all are primed for zipping and shipping, probably around the end of August.

That’s it! Thanks for reading this inaugural issue of The Gazelle. If you received it in error or would prefer not to receive future Gazelles, there are links for you below.  I'd be sad, but I would understand.
