With the May 18 IPO date looming for Facebook, and a proposed figure that values the company at just under $100 billion, it's a good time to review what's going through the head of your average sell side analyst who will be covering the stock.  (Hint: Think bullish.)

 

First, a translation is in order.  A sell-side analyst is employed by a brokerage or investment banking firm.  Conversely, a buy-side analyst is employed by an investment firm, be it a mutual fund company, hedge fund, or money management firm.  (More on this tomorrow.)

 

Sounds like the same thing, right? It could not be further from the truth. I am one of a rare, lucky breed that has worked on both sides.  Usually, one's make-up is for one and not the other.

Don't Miss Me, Bro!

In September 2007, a University of Florida student was escorted away from a microphone at a political event where featured speaker Senator John Kerry was addressing the crowd and answering questions.  As the student was being escorted out, he resisted and just before one of the officers used a Taser to subdue him, he uttered the now famous phrase: "Don't tase me, bro!"  Alas, he was, and it was caught on camera and seen over and over by millions on news networks, YouTube, and countless websites and personal web pages on the Internet.

 

It was the public's first real introduction to the Taser, produced and marketed by TASER International Inc. (NASDAQ: TASR - $4.91).  Although its history has been somewhat up and down due to the controversial nature of the product, it looks to us like you don't want to miss this one, bro.
