Overblown hype is traditionally followed by the trough of despair, but M2M can shrug off those earlier visionary forecasts, because growth has been robust in recent years and impressive ROIs are being realized. That said, a number of barriers must be removed before M2M can realize its full potential. Standards are an issue and they need to be international; the value chain is too complex, way too complex for enterprise IT management; privacy and security are valid concerns; and despite being a success story, M2M needs to do a better job on the education front.
In most industries that would look like a formidable set of barriers, but M2M’s potential is so huge that there is no reason for them not to go away, although it will take time. That might sound like a glib statement but consider this development. In April this year, SAP (News 
- Alert) and the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) launched an M2M resource center. SAP is a heavy hitter in the enterprise space and the EIU is a highly respected provider of insightful information, so the combination should go a long way towards clarifying doubts.
