Well, At Least She’s Honest

You’d think Siri’s programers would have thought about this one ahead of time. I mean, it might sound a little silly for Siri to say the iPhone 4 was the best smartphone ever, but that’s better than promoting your competitors.

Make Your Own Wonder Woman Shoes

Posted: 13 May 2012 01:06 AM PDT

Yes, you too can become a fashion Wonder Woman with just a little fabric and some simple basic pumps. The process is pretty simple, but you have to know how to sew at least a little. These would look great with a spunky little forties ensemble.

Trailer For Dragon Age The Animated Series

Posted: 12 May 2012 08:36 PM PDT

(YouTube Link)

The video game series Dragon Age is dark fantasy at it’s finest, full of murder, intrigue, magic and, of course, dragons.

This clip from the upcoming Dragon Age animated series by Funimation looks pretty cool, but I don’t know how I feel about the cheesy spell casting sound effects, or how easy they make it look to defeat a dragon.

But if it stays dark, bloody and full of action then I’m on board.

The Hashtag Tower

Posted: 12 May 2012 08:00 PM PDT

Now this is something to tweet about: Danish architects BIG have designed an apartment tower complex that looks like a hashtag.

“The Cross # Towers constitute a three-dimensional urban community of interlocking horizontal and vertical towers. Three public bridges connect two slender towers at different levels – underground, at the street and in the sky. Catering to the demands and desires of different residents, age groups and cultures the bridges are landscaped and equipped for a variety of activities traditionally restricted to the ground. The resultant volume forms a distinct figure on the new skyline of Seoul – a “#” that serves as a gateway to the new Yongsan Business District signaling a radical departure from the crude repetition of disconnected towers towards a new urban community that populates the three-dimensional space of the city.”

Paper Tornadoes By Mia Pearlman

Posted: 12 May 2012 07:35 PM PDT

Artist Mia Pearlman creates some unique and interesting installations in the form of swirling paper tornadoes, which look far less dangerous than the real thing yet are far more likely to paper cut you to smithereens.

Capturing the feeling of turbulent motion and the random shapes found in a funnel cloud, Mia’s massive cut paper artworks fill the room with a sense of wonder and probably look really neat when a light breeze sweeps through.

Man Advertised on Billboard to Get a Job

Posted: 12 May 2012 07:00 PM PDT

Bennett Olson was unemployed and desparate for a job, so he decided to do a bit of creative advertising to get hired:

In April, Olson paid $300 for an 8-second time slot on an electronic billboard near downtown Minneapolis. His ad was up for 24 hours, rotating with other ads on the billboard. The words "Hire Me!" appeared next to his website address and a picture of his face.

And yes, he landed a job: Link

Take A Ghostbusters Themed Tour Of New York

Posted: 12 May 2012 06:35 PM PDT

(YouTube Link)

The Ghostbusters tour of New York is a tribute to the classic film that showed us all we don’t need to be afraid of ghosts, or giant marshmallows for that matter.

A byproduct of Bleedingcool’s Patrick Willems relocating to the Big Apple, this fan film is as much a tribute to the city as it is a couple of geeks hamming it up on camera and re-enacting scenes from the film.

And they even have their own official tour musician, so if you’re a fan of the film you’re probably going to get a kick out of this vid. If not, expect a visit from Slimer while you sleep.

Teacher Used “Cone of Shame” to Discipline Teens

Posted: 12 May 2012 06:00 PM PDT

Pasco County high school teacher Laurie Bailey-Cutkomp has a unique way to discipline her misbehaving ninth graders: with the "cone of shame".

Now, she's in trouble for treating students like dogs:

In the movie, the character Dug (a dog) wears the "cone of shame" as a punishment for being disobedient.

Bailey-Cutkomp, who reportedly worked previously in the veterinary field, brought a cone into her classes after students asked about them.

The Birth Of Black Widow

Posted: 12 May 2012 05:23 PM PDT

The Avengers are such an iconic team of superheroes that it seems fitting for them to be celebrated by working them into an iconic painting.

Argentinian artist Julian Totino Tedesco shows his love for the classics and comic books with his piece The Birth Of Black Widow, which is based on Botticelli’s masterpiece The Birth Of Venus and was used as the alternate cover art for Fantastic Four #17.

Venus is cool and all, but Black Widow has a much higher body count, and a skin tight black suit to match.

Magnetic Implant to Hold iPod Nano

Posted: 12 May 2012 05:00 PM PDT

Tattoo artist Dave Hurban of Dynasty Tattoo in Newfield, New Jersey, likes to have his iPod Nano handy, so he decided to attach it to his wrist with magnets:

Hurban explained that the technique he used to get the four magnets under his skin to hold the iPod in place is actually a fairly typical one in the world of body piercing. “Those magnets are actually called micro-dermal anchors,” Dave explained, “and in body piercing they are very common. The tops are actually just 5 millimeter magnetic tops.” If you check out the admittedly cringe-worthy video of the process that the design firm Kaleidoscope Kreative shot, you can witness Hurban planting those very anchors, with a look of placid concentration on his face. “I took the ends of magnets and actually adhered them to the back of the iPod, and that’s how they click into my skin.”

Japan Could Become Extinct in 1,000 Years

Posted: 12 May 2012 04:00 PM PDT

Beset by aging population and low birth rates, Japan is facing a slow-moving crisis: researchers calculated that it could become extinct in 1,000 years!

Academics in the northern city of Sendai said that Japan's population of children aged up to 14, which now stands at 16.6 million, is shrinking at the rate of one every 100 seconds.

Their extrapolations pointed to a Japan with no children left within a millennium.

"If the rate of decline continues, we will be able to celebrate the Children's Day public holiday on May 5, 3011 as there will be one child," said Hiroshi Yoshida, an economics professor at Tohoku University.

"But 100 seconds later there will be no children left," he said. "The overall trend is towards extinction, which started in 1975 when Japan's fertility rate fell below two."

Man Stole Own Bicycle Back After Spotting it on Craigslist

Posted: 12 May 2012 03:00 PM PDT

Danny Lesh noticed that his stolen bike ended up for sale on Craigslist. When police declined to intervene, Danny decided to take justice into his own hands (or feet, in this case):

After haggling over the Craigslist price, Lesh says, he asked for a test ride. The vendor agreed, and Lesh pedaled around the block back to the waiting cab. He tossed the Cannondale in the trunk and rode off. The vendor called about half an hour later, demanding Lesh return the bike and threatening to notify the police himself, though it appears that call never materialized.

School Forfeited Baseball Game Rather Than Playing A Girl

Posted: 12 May 2012 02:00 PM PDT

Mesa Prep second baseman Paige Sultzbach, image: Facebook

There’s no crying in baseball, and now we learn that there’s also no
playing against girls in baseball. At least, that’s what happened in Arizona
last week:

All second baseman Paige Sultzbach wanted to do was play in her
school’s state championship baseball game tonight.

But because she is a girl, that won’t happen.

Sultzbach is a freshman at Mesa Preparatory Academy, which had
been scheduled to play Our Lady of Sorrows Academy in tonight’s Arizona
Charter Athletic Association state championship at Phoenix College.

But Our Lady of Sorrows, a fundamentalist Catholic school in Phoenix
that lost twice to Mesa Prep during the regular season, chose to forfeit
the championship game rather than play a team fielding a female player.

Our Lady of Sorrows school officials would not comment, but Sultzbach’s
mother, Pamela Sultzbach, said her daughter and the rest of the team
received the news after Wednesday afternoon’s practice.

"This is not a contact sport, it shouldn’t be an issue,"
Pamela said. "It wasn’t that they were afraid they were going to
hurt or injure her, it’s that (they believe) that a girl’s place is
not on a field."

Online Self-Blackmailing Service

You may have already engaged in the blackmail of other people for fun and profit. But why not experience it for yourself?

Aherk! is an online service that holds you accountable to a goal that you’ve chosen. Submit an incriminating photo of yourself. When the deadline hits, your Facebook friends vote whether you’ve achieved that goal. If not, Aherk! posts the photo online. Then, presumably, the police arrive sometime later.

One Holi Mess: India’s Incredible Color-Soaked Festival

Posted: 12 May 2012 10:00 AM PDT

The Hindu Holi festival may be a mess, but it makes for some vivid pictures!

The spring festival of Holi, celebrated across many parts of India, but especially in the north, is a time when barriers are torn down and the usual rules, if not entirely broken, are at least well and truly bent. It's a time when adults can be children again, and children can get away with all kinds of mischief. The air is full of laughter and joyful shouts as brightly colored powders and water fly.

This Week at Neatorama

Posted: 12 May 2012 06:00 AM PDT

This past week I got a lesson in what it means to have so many teenagers. The end of the school year meant we had two out-of-town school trips, a choir concert, a piano recital, two awards ceremonies, a picnic, a pizza party, an art show, final exams, and a yard sale. I attended, contributed to, or prepared the kids for each of these. Next week we have another out-of-town trip, a party, …and graduation. Remember when your mom went through all that stuff for you? That’s why she deserves special treatment on Mother’s Day -and all year round. If you’re catching your breath this weekend after a busy week, enjoy yourself by reading the exclusive features here that may have missed this week.

Jill Harness told us about how Dark Shadows Really Was Dark…Once.

Eddie Deezen wrote The Three Stooges Take on Hitler, complete with a video of the short You Natzy Spy!

Mental_floss magazine had the story of Democracy on the High Seas: How Pirates Rocked the Vote.

Troy's Book of Bear (and Other Adventures) came from the Annals of Improbable Research.

Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader brought us The Greatest Canadian, about how Tommy Douglas fought for and won universal health care.

Congratulations to the winners of Battleship Mystery Box giveaway! Shelly, orchdirector, and Gabriel won gifts from the NeatoShop, and jtaega, Kautzer, Stephen, hoopajob, and Mia won random items from the Mystery Box!

The post with most comments this week was Woman Fired For "Living in Sin." Coming in second was The Greatest Canadian, followed by Mom Sent Bullied Kid to School with Stun Gun.

If you haven’t checked out our Twitter feed or Facebook page or G+ site yet, this weekend would be a good time to do that! You’ll find plenty of “extras” that don’t get posted at the main site, plus active communities of Neatoramanauts with their contributions. Pinterest fans will find us there, too!

Now, if you really want to get your mother something neat from the NeatoShop, but can’t get it shipped because the holiday is tomorrow, try this: order a gift, print off a picture, and slip it into your Mothers Day card, kind of like a gift certificate. You can blame the delay on the shipping company if you like. And if you’re a mother, we hope you have the most wonderful Mother’s Day ever!
