| | | Stock Goes to the Dogs
We've talked about some health and wellness stocks before in these pages. Sometimes they are referred to as nutraceuticals or green products. The products come in various offerings, including food and beverage; those with medicinal properties; and cosmeceuticals, which are environmentally sound, natural health and beauty cosmetics, shampoos, sanitizers, etc. The industry is highly fragmented and it appears to be difficult to gain an edge without a really good brand or something that is a major differentiator from the other firms in the space.
So I was performing my customary due diligence, scouring the market with my virtual analyst tools when I found the most extraordinary thing. Just when I thought I had seen everything, I was proven wrong. I discovered what appears to be a new company (relatively speaking) that is in this natural health business. However, this company is targeting a different market entirely: Dogs.

This is a Sharp Idea
Sometimes one can come up with good stock ideas from the strangest places. Now I don't mean dark alleys, although I sometimes get horse racing and college football tips there ... but I digress.
When I was in a doctor's office with my daughter the other day, staring at the walls for what seemed to be forever, I saw the ubiquitous "sharps" box and medical waste bin. At that moment I thought to myself, "Self, I bet there is a real business here." Indeed, there is.
Sharps Compliance Corp. (NASDAQ: SMED - $3.91) provides cost-effective and environmentally friendly management solutions for medical waste and unused dispensed medications. It has established itself as a brand name in the mail-back/ship-back waste disposal food chain.
The company's goal is to capture a meaningful share of the estimated $3.8 billion untapped and highly fragmented market for unused medications, used syringes and medical waste. SMED is targeting the smaller sites rather than hospitals and large health care settings directly, but is still able to capture high volume business by targeting the major agencies that are interrelated with this medical waste stream. Customers include the U.S. government, pharmaceutical manufacturers, home healthcare providers, retail pharmacies and clinics, and the professional market comprised of physicians, dentists and veterinary practices.
