The importance of our eyes can never be overstated. The eye essentially performs
the function of sensing light and transmitting the necessary signals through the
optic nerves to the brain. The brain then registers the images and acts accordingly.

Scientists long ago discovered that a class of naturally occurring pigments called
carotenoids held powerful antioxidant properties that are crucial for the health
of our eyes. Interestingly, none of the carotenes pass through the blood-brain-barrier.
The exceptions are lutein, zeaxanthin, canthaxanthin and most importantly astaxanthin.

The carotenoid Astaxanthin stands alone as the 'super-nutrient' for the eyes. Astaxanthin
is the carotenoid responsible for the red color in salmon, lobster, krill, crab,
other shell fish and the algae H. pluvialis. It is far more effective than other
carotenoids in responding to free radical damage from sunlight. Astaxanthin actually
crosses the blood-brain barrier and the blood-retinal barrier, increasing the protective
effect on the arteries of the eye. [3]

Antioxidants may actually help prevent cataracts, an eye condition that stems from
the breakdown of proteins that compose the lens that sits behind the iris. This
breakdown process, called oxidative stress, results from free radicals - rogue
oxygen molecules that can damage healthy cells. This process causes the lens to
turn opaque and turn the vision cloudy. The antioxidant component of Astaxanthin
may help slow this process or have some effect on preventing oxidative stress.
Prevention is the key to optimal eye health. Medications and supplements will not
reverse cataracts that are already formed. Doctors may treat cataracts with surgery
and restore vision that is caused by the clouding of the lens. [4] We recommend
