More clarification of the erroneous reporting last week of EFT's APA status

NOTE FROM PAT CARRINGTON

Most of you know that in my excitement at the seeming great good news, I copied Dawson Church of EFTUniverse.com's public statement (later retracted by Dawson on his site which I did not know at the time) to the effect that the American Psychological Association (APA) had finally recognized EFT as an "evidence-based" procedure.   I wrote you all correcting this mistake but now I am happy to report a further clarification of this issue.

Dr. David Feinstein, the leading Energy Psychology researcher who wrote the important new paper on the meridian tapping methods - an important new review of research that one of the most prestigious American Psychological Association journals has accepted for publication - sent me today a very useful clarification of this whole situation and I pass it along to you below.

In this letter David speaks directly to all of you who are interested in the Energy Psychology field. He writes:

"Hi Everyone,

There is definitely some good new news, and there is definitely some old news that has not yet changed. The really exciting new news (which will, with time, help the old news to change in the ways all of us have been hoping) is this:

A critical review of 51 peer-reviewed clinical outcome reports and systematic studies of EFT and TFT led to the following statements in a paper that is scheduled to appear in one of the APA's most prestigious journals, Review of General Psychology.

What It Means (NOTE: The quote below is directly from Feinstein's paper, it is NOT a statement by the APA organization):

1.  "A review of current evidence revealed that the use of acupoint stimulation in treating psychological disorders has been examined in a number of studies that met accepted scientific standards. These studies have consistently demonstrated strong effect sizes and other positive statistical results that far exceed chance after relatively few treatment sessions. Investigations in more than a dozen countries by independent research teams have all produced similar results."

David Feinstein goes on to say in his letter:

2.  "While [the APA's] Division 12 has not yet evaluated any of the evidence for energy psychology in published reports, clinical conditions for which acupoint stimulation protocols appear -- based on the studies presented above -- to meet [Division 12's] criteria for designation as a "well-established treatment" include phobias and test-taking anxiety.  Acupoint protocols appear to meet the criteria for designation as a "probably efficacious treatment" for PTSD and public speaking anxiety."  [References for these claims are found in the full paper].

What It Doesn't Mean:

1.  It does not mean that the American Psychological Association has somehow made a special announcement that EFT or TFT or other forms of energy psychology have attained evidence-based status.

2.  It does not mean that the APA has reversed its 12-year ban preventing its CE sponsors from offering continuing education credit to psychologists who receive training in TFT or EFT.  See 2011 media release about the still-current status of that controversy.

The implications of the new paper bode well for the future of energy psychology and its acceptance by the wider professional community, but it is important for energy psychology's credibility that they not be overstated.  You can download the full pre-publication version of the paper and/or send the link to anyone who should know that 51 of 51 published peer-reviewed outcome reports and studies support the claim that energy psychology protocols can reduce suffering and enhance performance -- in most cases with unusual speed and power.

Thank you for what you are doing to help get these ground-breaking innovations to serve all who might benefit,

David Feinstein"

Pat's comment: This confusing incident happily called my attention to David's excellent new paper and I would encourage everyone who is interested in this area to download it and read it!
