| Posted: 19 Jun 2012 04:55 AM PDT The PBS series Off Book is back with another look at a cutting edge artform, this time focusing on the gamer friendly world of 8-bit art. 8-bit art has become even more popular since the good old days of video game consoles, and has even spawned an awesomely geeky form of electronic music to occupy your time between gaming sessions. So sit back and wax nostalgic as colorful, but not too colorful, pixels dance across the screen to that charmingly minimal 8-bit sound! –via Geekosystem |

Well then, head over to Pica Pica Press’ Etsy store and enjoy their fine selection of MST3000, video game and other geek-inspired jewelry. Link Via The Mary Sue |
| Posted: 19 Jun 2012 03:50 AM PDT Let your fishies tour the globe from the comfort of your home with this world map aquarium. No guarantees that your finned friends will appreciate being world travelers, but you’ll appreciate the fun to be had pretending your little fishies are pirates and merchant ships battling it out on the high seas. Even better than the playtime potential is the fact that this world map aquarium is also a coffee table! No wonder designer Takuro Yamamoto won a TIFF Award for this cleverly designed fish cage. |

| Photos Of Faces Pressed Against Glass Posted: 19 Jun 2012 02:48 AM PDT Animals, and babies, look really cute…until their faces are pressed against glass! This fun gallery of creepy glass pressed faces features 29 images of facial smooshing which transforms these otherwise darling little mugs into utter creepsville. |
| 12 Bizarre Lakes From Around the World Posted: 19 Jun 2012 02:31 AM PDT From a boiling, blood-red lake in Japan to a carbon-dioxide-filled lake in Africa, these 12 bodies of water are both absolutely stunning and fascinating. Of course, just because they’re unique doesn’t mean they’re actually places you should go swimming -in fact many of them, including the two I just mentioned could outright kill you. |

| Blade Runner-The Watercolor Edition Posted: 19 Jun 2012 01:55 AM PDT The dreamlike quality of Ridley Scott’s classic scifi film Blade Runner has been captured in a most painterly manner by Anders Ramsell, who reproduced thirteen minutes of the film (so far!) via 3600 watercolor paintings. He plans on making over the entire film in this colorfully abstract manner, and I for one can’t wait to see the rest! –via Topless Robot |
| Watch This Little Monkey Enjoy Dinner Posted: 19 Jun 2012 01:29 AM PDT Admittedly, you probably won’t want to watch all ten minutes of this video although it is undoubtedly adorable, it still is a long time to watch this little spider monkey munch on his dinner. In case you were wondering, this little guy isn’t a pet, he was orphaned and is being cared for at the Arcas Wildlife Sanctuary in Guatemala. Via Cute Overload |
| Cuttlefish Fights For Spawning Rights Posted: 19 Jun 2012 01:00 AM PDT Giant cuttlefish (Sepia apama) look so fluid and graceful in the water! But hold your admiration if you are another cuttlefish, because this one is shoving his rivals out of the way so he can make baby cuttlefish. The stakes are high:

| A Pixar Style Version Of Justice League America Posted: 18 Jun 2012 11:52 PM PDT Digital artist Daniel Araya created these fun concept art pieces that envision what a Pixar version of DC’s Justice League of America would look like. The characters look like they’d fit right in with The Incredibles, but the fact that Disney owns Marvel Comics means that a DC/Pixar movie is about as likely as a real life Superman falling to earth just outside of Smallville, USA. | What Separates Average Computer Programmers from Extraordinary Programmers? Beards. Posted: 18 Jun 2012 10:00 PM PDT Some programming languages become widely used. Others languish in obscurity. How can you predict which languages will succeed and which will fail? Tamir Khason has figured it out: it’s not the the language, but the developer. Languages devised by people* with full beards or, in some cases, mighty mustaches, thrive. Those made by the clean-shaven gain few fans. Take, for example, Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie, who are pictured above. They have fine, beardly beards. They also invented C. A coincidence? Maybe. But certainly a beard can’t hurt. And studies that I just made up show a strong correlation between having a beard and being super intelligent. So why take chances? Start growing one today. This fun “what if?” scenario comes to you courtesy of graphic designer Muzski, who shows us how cool a collaboration between H.P. Lovecraft and Herge could have been. | The Funniest Father’s Day Tweet Posted: 18 Jun 2012 03:30 PM PDT The best Father’s Day Tweet was sent by Ronan Farrow, who is the only biological child of Mia Farrow and Woody Allen together. In case this Tweet doesn’t mean anything to you, his mother actress Mia Farrow adopted several children and then had a relationship with director Woody Allen for 12 years, but they never married. Allen fell in love with one of Farrow’s children, Soon-Yi Previn, who had been adopted by Farrow and then-husband Andre Previn. Soon-Yi Previn was around ten years old when Allen and Farrow became lovers, and 22 when Mia Farrow discovered Previn’s affair with Allen in 1992. That’s when Farrow broke off with the 57-year-old Allen, and he married Soon-Yi in 1997. So Allen is Ronan Farrow’s father, but also his brother-in-law. Got it? Link -via The Daily What |

Forget the hipster fixie bike and say hello to the mutant bicycles of the 1940s. LIFE magazine wrote: “By artfully applying welders’ torches to metal tubing, the chapter’s members transform ordinary, utilitarian bicycles into traveling monstrosities. By far the most outlandish ideas have come from the Steinlauf family, who produced from their bicycle repair shop most of the oddities [shown in the article]. They are hazardous; generally at least one member of the clan is to be found in the hospital.” Link (don't miss the Gangster bike!) |

| Posted: 18 Jun 2012 06:00 AM PDT Years ago, a bunch of artists painted Darth Vader helmets, creating a variety of unique designs. For those that prefer Doctor Who over Star Wars, you might want to check out the new project that features a variety of painted classic British call boxes. Granted, they might not actually be TARDISes, but they certainly look close enough when painted in outrageous colors and are disguised as things like Big Ben. Hey at least these might be better disguises than a big blue box hiding in the middle of ancient Rome. |
