The Evolution Of 8-Bit Art

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 04:55 AM PDT

(YouTube Link)

The PBS series Off Book is back with another look at a cutting edge artform, this time focusing on the gamer friendly world of 8-bit art.

8-bit art has become even more popular since the good old days of video game consoles, and has even spawned an awesomely geeky form of electronic music to occupy your time between gaming sessions.

So sit back and wax nostalgic as colorful, but not too colorful, pixels dance across the screen to that charmingly minimal 8-bit sound!

Cuttlefish Fights For Spawning Rights

Giant cuttlefish (Sepia apama) look so fluid and graceful in the water! But hold your admiration if you are another cuttlefish, because this one is shoving his rivals out of the way so he can make baby cuttlefish. The stakes are high:

The giant cuttlefish is the world’s largest cuttlefish species. They gather in large numbers to mate. During that time, large males compete aggressively for females and small males tend to approach potential mates sneakily. They can mate only once in their lives and the females will die not long after laying eggs.

What Separates Average Computer Programmers from Extraordinary Programmers? Beards.

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 10:00 PM PDT

Some programming languages become widely used. Others languish in obscurity. How can you predict which languages will succeed and which will fail? Tamir Khason has figured it out: it’s not the the language, but the developer. Languages devised by people* with full beards or, in some cases, mighty mustaches, thrive. Those made by the clean-shaven gain few fans.

Take, for example, Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie, who are pictured above. They have fine, beardly beards. They also invented C. A coincidence? Maybe. But certainly a beard can’t hurt. And studies that I just made up show a strong correlation between having a beard and being super intelligent. So why take chances? Start growing one today.

The Company That Quietly Knows Everything About You

You probably have never heard of Axciom, but it has heard of you. Actually, not only has it heard of you, it knows all about you:

It knows who you are. It knows where you live. It knows what you do.

It peers deeper into American life than the F.B.I. or the I.R.S., or those prying digital eyes at Facebook and Google. If you are an American adult, the odds are that it knows things like your age, race, sex, weight, height, marital status, education level, politics, buying habits, household health worries, vacation dreams — and on and on.

Right now in Conway, Ark., north of Little Rock, more than 23,000 computer servers are collecting, collating and analyzing consumer data for a company that, unlike Silicon Valley’s marquee names, rarely makes headlines. It’s called the Acxiom Corporation, and it’s the quiet giant of a multibillion-dollar industry known as database marketing.

Blogging Buzz Correlates with Movie Box Office Success

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 06:00 PM PDT

Will that movie be a box office success? Akira Ishii and colleagues from the Department of Applied Mathematics and Physics at Tottori University in Japan may have cracked the secret of predicting box office success: how much blog coverage they have.

Collecting revenue data on 25 Hollywood and local movies released in Japan, including Avatar, The Da Vinci Code, Crows Zero and Always: Sunset on Third Street 3, the group compared it with advertising spending and online activity on social networks and blogs*.

“We found a direct correlation between the number of social media postings about a movie on a given day, and the number of people who intended to purchase tickets,” Professor Ishii told The Hollywood Reporter.

“However, there was no direct relationship between the advertising spending and the purchasing intention. The timing of the advertising campaign is important though, with two weeks to ten days before opening being the optimum time,” explained the professor.

*That quote is from Hollywood Reporter. Just to clear up the confusion about "social networks" which most people interpret to primarily be Facebook and Twitter - Delving a bit into the details, the researchers actually measure the number of daily blog posts for 25 movies, rather than Facebook or Twitter mentions.

New Level of Fakery in China: Fake U.S. Bank

The Funniest Father’s Day Tweet

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 03:30 PM PDT

The best Father’s Day Tweet was sent by Ronan Farrow, who is the only biological child of Mia Farrow and Woody Allen together. In case this Tweet doesn’t mean anything to you, his mother actress Mia Farrow adopted several children and then had a relationship with director Woody Allen for 12 years, but they never married. Allen fell in love with one of Farrow’s children, Soon-Yi Previn, who had been adopted by Farrow and then-husband Andre Previn. Soon-Yi Previn was around ten years old when Allen and Farrow became lovers, and 22 when Mia Farrow discovered Previn’s affair with Allen in 1992. That’s when Farrow broke off with the 57-year-old Allen, and he married Soon-Yi in 1997. So Allen is Ronan Farrow’s father, but also his brother-in-law. Got it? Link -via The Daily What

Mutant Bikes of the 1940s

Forget the hipster fixie bike and say hello to the mutant bicycles of the 1940s. LIFE magazine wrote:

“By artfully applying welders’ torches to metal tubing, the chapter’s members transform ordinary, utilitarian bicycles into traveling monstrosities. By far the most outlandish ideas have come from the Steinlauf family, who produced from their bicycle repair shop most of the oddities [shown in the article]. They are hazardous; generally at least one member of the clan is to be found in the hospital.”

World’s Growing Obesity is Like Adding an Extra Billion People

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 01:30 PM PDT

Want to rile up a Malthusian? Tell 'em that not only there will be billions more people on Earth, there will be billions more FAT people!

According to researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the increasing level of fatness in the world is as bad as an extra billion people:

[the researchers] calculate the weight of the global population at 287 million tonnes. They estimate that 15 million tonnes of this mass is due to people being overweight, and 3.5 million tonnes due to obesity.

Using World Health Organization data from 2005, the scientists worked out that the average global body weight was 62kg (137lb). But there were huge regional differences. In North America, the average was 80.7kg (178lb), while in Asia it was 57.7kg (127lb) .

While Asia accounts for 61% of the global population, it only accounts for 13% of the weight of the world due to obesity.

One of the authors of the paper, Prof Ian Roberts, explained the thinking behind the calculation.

"When people think about environmental sustainability, they immediately focus on population. Actually, when it comes down to it - it's not how many mouths there are to feed, it's how much flesh there is on the planet."

NBA Goes Geek Chic

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 12:36 PM PDT

We told you before that it's popular for defendants to wear hipster glasses in criminal court to appear innocent. Now that fashion trend has found its way into another kind of court, the basketball court:

The way they fly around the basketball court, LeBron James and Kevin Durant often resemble Superman. Then they return to the locker room and come out looking like Clark Kent.

Mr. James, Mr. Durant and many other superstars in the NBA playoffs have found a novel way to accessorize their bespoke suits: thick-rimmed, chunky, ostentatious eyeglasses.

In the NBA, the new cool is geek chic. For most, the eyewear is purely a fashion statement, never mind old stigmas about astigmatism. Oklahoma City guard Russell Westbrook admits that his lenses are nonprescription. Like Mr. Westbrook, Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade has gone so far as to wear glasses without glass in them (or even plastic) as fashion models are sometimes known to do. And yet impeccable vision hasn't stopped Thunder and Heat players from flaunting the latest in designer eyewear at the NBA Finals.

"Back in the day, you wore them because you had to," said James Spina, the editor of 20/20, an eyewear trade publication. "These days, you wear them because you can't wait to wear them."

Scott Cacciola and Ben Cohen of the Wall Street Journal bravely explains the spectacular spectacles phenomenon: Link (Photo: LeBron James goes geek chic by Wilfredo Lee/AP)

This undoubtedly signals that the hipster glasses trend has crested, so be prepared for the next big thing: monocles!

How do we know someone is no longer alive?

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 12:00 PM PDT

Alex posted an item about stem cells living long after the body they inhabit is declared dead. This kind of discovery make you wonder what “dead” really means. IO9 posted an interview with Dick Teresi, author of the book The Undead: Organ Harvesting, the Ice-Water Test, Beating Heart Cadavers — How Medicine Is Blurring the Line Between Life and Death, who says medical doctors and scientists don’t see death in the same way, and there are differences even among those groups.

Some patients are declared brain dead and then begin spontaneously breathing hours later. Medical scientists say it doesn’t matter because most brain-dead patients do not come back to life, but a rigorous scientist would say that these cases speak loudly about the flaws in our criteria for death. And yes — death to a cardiologist means that your heart has stopped, and he can’t get it to restart. But to a neurologist, it might mean something else. In 1968, a committee at Harvard Medical School put forth an article stating that there is a second kind of death: brain death. Even though your heart is still pumping, and you’re still able to breathe on a ventilator, if your brain stem is down, you’re dead. This theory was made law in all 50 states in 1981, so now in the U.S. we have two kinds of death: real death (cardiopulmonary death) and what some doctors call “pretty dead,” or brain death. A cell biologist, on the other hand, may have a standard more rigorous than cardiologists or neurologists. They might want to see all one’s cells dead, which we call putrefaction.

He goes on to talk about how our complex criteria for death has evolved over history, and where it may be tomorrow. Link -via Not Exactly Rocket Science

Camera Trap Sex Tape

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 10:00 AM PDT

Camera traps are hidden in the forest to record wildlife without disturbing their natural behavior. But some folks think they should be clearly labeled after one caught an unnamed Austrian politician having sex on film.

Speaking to the local service of Austrian public broadcaster ORF on Monday, Hans Zeger, head of ARGE Daten, a non-governmental organization focusing on data protection, criticised the forest surveillance, saying that the automatic cameras pose a threat to individuals’ privacy rights. The cameras should “at least be marked with signs,” so that forest visitors can “adjust their behavior and avoid the monitored areas,” he said.

But the Carinthian cameras are inconspicuous by design. Mounted on trees deep in the forest, they allow hunters and preservationists to observe animals in their natural habitats and feeding grounds. The cameras are sophisticated pieces of technology equipped with motion sensors and infrared capabilities, which allow them to capture footage of light-footed creatures in the night. They clearly have no trouble detecting humans in the undergrowth, either.

On the one hand, the politician is guilty of trespassing, as the area was clearly posted as forbidden. But the tape will not be made public, as its release is against Austrian law and carries a $25,000 fine. Link -via TIME Newsfeed

Naked Shopping is a Hit

A new Priss supermarket opened in Süderlügum, North Frisia, Germany, on Saturday with a special promotion offering €270 worth of groceries to the first 100 shoppers who showed up in their birthday suits. The offer went over much better than expected, with around 250 naked people waiting as the store opened.

V’Ger is Exiting the Heliosphere

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 07:30 AM PDT

Voyager I, the space probe launched 35 years ago, has gone farther than any probe before, and is still communicating with earth. Soon it will be completely free from the influence of our Sun -in other words, it is leaving the solar system.

It’s hard to overstate how wild an accomplishment this would be: A machine, built here on Earth by the brain- and handiwork of humans, has sailed from Florida, out of Earth’s orbit, beyond Mars, beyond the gas giants of Jupiter and Saturn, and may now have left the heliosphere — tiny dot in the universe beholden to our sun. Had it really happened? How would we know?

We’re not quite there yet, Voyager’s project scientist and former head of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab, Edward Stone, told me. The spacecraft is on its way out — “it’s leaving the solar system” — but we don’t know how far it has to go or what that transition to interstellar space will look like.

Voyager launched in 1977. Today, Voyager I is about 121 astronomical units away (one astronomical unit is equal to the rough distance from the Sun to the Earth). That is so far that it takes 16 hours for the radio signals it transmits to reach us. (Voyager II is about 22 astronomical units — approximately seven years — behind.) It is traveling at about 17 kilometers per second (38,000 miles per hour), propelled by the slingshot effect from flying by Jupiter and Saturn. (“It’s well above escape velocity,” Stone said.) The spacecraft’s cameras have been turned off since 1990, when it took the pictures for the famous Family Portrait mosaic that captures the planets as they appeared as Voyager I looked back over the solar system it had traveled across.

Scientists are monitoring certain cosmic ray particles hitting Voyager, the kind that do not easily enter the heliosphere, to monitor its progress. Read more about it at the Atlantic. Link -via Not Exactly Rocket Science

I haven’t the foggiest idea who won this horse race. Fog covered the Elwick track in Tasmania, making the horses and riders all but invisible to spectators:

Although visibility was still poor it was good enough to proceed and Harding gave the all-clear.

As the horses and jockeys made their way to the barriers and started to load into the gates, nature again took another turn and the fog quickly engulfed the racetrack as the three horses were set to jump.

The Artistic TARDIS Project

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Years ago, a bunch of artists painted Darth Vader helmets, creating a variety of unique designs. For those that prefer Doctor Who over Star Wars, you might want to check out the new project that features a variety of painted classic British call boxes.

Granted, they might not actually be TARDISes, but they certainly look close enough when painted in outrageous colors and are disguised as things like Big Ben. Hey at least these might be better disguises than a big blue box hiding in the middle of ancient Rome.
