Egg Russian Roulette World Championships

Posted: 27 Jun 2012 04:44 AM PDT

(YouTube Link)

File this under “competitions that seem stupid but people really enjoy watching”–egg Russian roulette, where hard boiled eggs are mixed in with the raw ones, and knuckleheads take turns smashing them on their foreheads to find out which is which.

Held in Lincolnshire, this egg headed competition draws some fierce crackers to the table, and everyone leaves with egg on their face. Just yolking! *facepalm*

Gritty Street Photography By Nate “Igor” Smith

Posted: 27 Jun 2012 03:39 AM PDT

Nate “Igor” Smith is known for his work on the photo website Driven By Boredom, but he has another side, a street side that doesn’t involve canned shots of people posing at events, a side that relies on happenstance to capture that perfect moment in time.

Nate’s vision is raw and voyeuristic, catching sight of moments that the subjects would probably rather forget. These are scenes of city life-sometimes violent, sometimes strange, but always extremely NYC.

Forest And Mountain Sculptures By Keisuke Tanaka

Posted: 27 Jun 2012 02:39 AM PDT

These wonderfully organic sculptures by Keisuke Tanaka reveal the artist’s deep reverence for the beauty of the natural world, and look like something found in a fantasy forest.

They’re carved out of solid wood, then meticulously hand painted so that even the smallest details will hold up to scrutiny. If I were an insect, I would be proud to make one of these sculptures my home!

Alan Moore Stops Griping And Starts Making Movies

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 10:52 PM PDT

Alan Moore is known as much for his writing as for his grouchy disposition, and generally hates the Hollywood treatments his works have received so far, which is why I think making his own movies is a brilliant idea!

Alan is working with his friend Mitch Jenkins on “a multi-layered, multi-episode narrative created by Moore and brought to life by Jenkins” called Show Pieces, of which the first installment Act Of Faith has already been filmed.

Hopefully Alan will be able to take criticism of his movies as well as he’s able to dish it out!

Maybe "Moose-headed Bat" would be a better name but we’ve been warned never to insult moose… mooses… meece, whatever. Hey, ever wonder what the unwanted lovechild of Rocky and Bullwinkle would be like? Wonder no longer.

Prisoners Earn Early Release by Writing Good Essays

If you see a young person heading down the wrong path–one that leads to a life behind bars–then help him out. Teach him how to read and write well. It may get him out of prison faster:

Inmates in four federal prisons holding some of Brazil’s most notorious criminals will be able to read up to 12 works of literature, philosophy, science or classics to trim a maximum 48 days off their sentence each year, the government announced.

Prisoners will have up to four weeks to read each book and write an essay which must “make correct use of paragraphs, be free of corrections, use margins and legible joined-up writing,” said the notice published on Monday in the official gazette.

Avatar Themed Nightclub Opens In South Africa

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 05:52 PM PDT

Entrepreneur and fan of blue aliens Mike Basson has opened an Avatar themed nightclub in Rivonia, South Africa so people can get all spaced out on the dance floor.

It’s called Avastar, looks ridiculously decadent with flamethrowers and optic fiber chandeliers, and should be just the thing for those who enjoy throwing their money away while many others in Africa struggle for survival.

30 Year Treasure Hunt Ends With Discovery Of Celtic Gold

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 04:54 PM PDT

Treasure hunters Reg Mead and Richard Miles struck gold, and silver, recently when their 30 year long quest for buried treasure on the island of Jersey, which is off the coast of Normandy.

Here’s more info on the treasure they discovered:

The treasure was inside a large block of clay. It contains 30,000 to 50,000 silver and gold Celtic coins dating from the 1st Century BC. The coins—which could have been buried to prevent Roman troops from getting them during Julius Caesar’s invasion of the British Islands—come from Armorica. They have been buried for more than 2,000 years. According to numismatic experts, each coin is worth 100 to 200 British Pounds ($156 to $311).

The treasure is now on display at the Jersey Heritage Museum, where the curator will surely use it to fill a kiddie pool and dive in like Scrooge McDuck!

Old County Map Title Pages

In the 19th century, printers were proud of their craft and made everyday jobs into works of art. Consider county records, such as maps and deeds and such. They were bound into volumes of boring but useful historical data, and the typography printed on the cover was magnificent …at least compared to the computer-generated cover pages and labels used today. Spoiled Children

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 11:30 AM PDT

Elizabeth Kolbert wrote an overview of parenting books and research at The New Yorker, in which she marvels at the Matsigenka tribe of Peru and their helpful unspoiled children. She give examples of how spoiled modern American children are, and then gives examples from her own life.

Not long ago, in the hope that our sons might become a little more Matsigenka, my husband and I gave them a new job: unloading the grocery bags from the car. One evening when I came home from the store, it was raining. Carrying two or three bags, the youngest, Aaron, who is thirteen, tried to jump over a puddle. There was a loud crash. After I'd retrieved what food could be salvaged from a Molotov cocktail of broken glass and mango juice, I decided that Aaron needed another, more vigorous lesson in responsibility. Now, in addition to unloading groceries, he would also have the task of taking out the garbage. On one of his first forays, he neglected to close the lid on the pail tightly enough, and it attracted a bear. The next morning, as I was gathering up the used tissues, ant-filled raisin boxes, and slimy Saran Wrap scattered across the yard, I decided that I didn't have time to let my kids help out around the house. (My husband informed me that I'd just been "kiddie-whipped.")

Well there’s your problem. There is no reason a teenager cannot pick up shards of glass that he himself caused. Other, worse examples are given, like the boy who demanded his father untie shoes for him or the 8-year-old girl who sat down at the table to find no silverware at her place setting and said, "How am I supposed to eat?" Those stories come from a study done by Anthropologist Elinor Ochs and her colleagues at UCLA in which they recorded an entire week of activity in 32 middle-class families in Southern California.

It isn’t that the kids were unable to do the tasks or that their parents didn’t express a need for help, say the researchers. Rather, the studied children didn’t seem to view it as their routine responsibility to contribute, the researchers say.

Photographs with the Feel of Movement

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 11:00 AM PDT

Brazilian artist Lucas Simões uses photographs much like a frame in a film:

Each photo is often revealed by merely moving the image within the photo a few millimeters. They are woven in the form a wave and then fixed onto a support made of wood and cloth.

The aligned and woven photos give the sensation of movement. They are my own reference to the cinema, without being cinema, hence the name “quasi-cinema.”

How To Eat Chocolate

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 07:30 AM PDT

National Geographic’s “Digital Nomad” Andrew Evans investigated Swiss chocolate by visiting a factory in Broc, Switzerland, in which tourists can take part in an all-you-can-eat sampling. There are guides to help participants rein in their tendency to overdo it, because the enjoyment comes from the quality, not the quantity. Swiss chocolate expert Michel Baud tells us step-by-step how to get the most out of chocolate.

* Begin by snapping the chocolate in half. Inhale and ponder the aromas you can sense: cocoa, vanilla, smoke, malt, etc.

* Let the first bite be small to "warm up" the tongue, which can only taste sweet, sour, salty, bitter. Some chocolates can hit all four tastes.

* The second bite is the one that counts. Suck on the chocolate and feel how it melts, sense the texture (grainy or smooth?). Is it sweet or dry?

There’s more to the process, which you can read at NatGeo’s Intelligent Travel blog. Link -Thanks, Marilyn!

Sculptural Lace Tsunami

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 07:00 AM PDT

Tsunami 1.26 by Janet Echelman

You're looking at aerial lace installation by Janet Echelman titled Tsunami 1.26. It was inspired by the 2010 Chile Earthquake and ensuing tsunami (the earthquake was so powerful that it shortened the length of the day by 1.26 microsecond, hence the name).

Janet wrote:

My studio generated a 3D model of the tsunami using data from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the NOAA Center for Tsunami Research. I then used software to transform an outline of the model’s higher amplitude area into a sculptural form. My studio created hand-knotted models to achieve the complex shaping of the piece.

This artwork utilizes Spectra®, a material 15 times stronger than steel by weight. The mesh is knotted by machine in order to withstand winds, but is engineered to reflect the intricacy of handmade lace.
