When to Stop Chasing Stocks

Every day we monitor the new highs and new lows on the major exchanges as well as the OTC stocks.  There are a lot of investors who just chase stocks or sectors reaching new highs. You can make a quick buck if timed right, but you can also lose money quickly.  So how does one play the chase?  To find out, we must first review sample scenarios.

 

Sometimes one gets lucky (or is really good) and gets on board a low-priced stock before or as it starts to make its run.  A feeling of euphoria or relief sets in as you watch it move higher, increasing your return and the value of your investment or trading portfolio.  If it is a real high flyer or volatile stock, you are likely watching it constantly by hitting refresh on your computer. 

 

As it rises, you inevitably start to wonder if you should get off the gravy train.  The problem is that you made so much money in a short time, the volume is still high and the stock is going up, so you don't want to sell, lest you lose out on making more. Paralysis sets in.

There are times when I think that marketing innovation has all but disappeared, only to be replaced by technology innovation.  Being an innovator and having what is called first-mover advantage is a very valuable commodity and is a strong feature in low-priced stocks.
