7 Weird Tourist Destinations

Posted: 04 Jul 2012 05:06 AM PDT

Sure most people want to spend their summers in Hawaii, Bermuda or somewhere else warm and sunny, but there are plenty of others who prefer their vacation destinations to be a little off the beaten path. Here are a few of the strangest tourist destinations in the world.

Guanajuato Mummy Museum

Back in 1870, the cemetery in Guanajuato, Mexico was quickly filling up due to a cholera outbreak. In an effort to help the city make some money and to help control the cemetery overpopulation, a law was passed requiring families to pay in order to keep their loved ones under ground. You could pay 170 pesos at once and be done with the matter or you could pay 50 pesos every year for three years –the option that appealed to many less wealthy families. Those who didn't pay would have their loved ones disinterred and the mummified bodies were put on display in the Mummies' Museum. Ninety percent of the bodies buried were eventually exhumed. In the one to three years that the bodies were buried, 2% of them became mummified underground.

The cemetery tax lasted all the way until 1958, but the museum is still open, as it became a popular tourist attraction all the way back in the early 1900's. Business really started booming though after the 1970 movie Santo Versus the Mummies of Guanajuato featured popular masked wrestler Santo battling the mummies after they had come back to life. These days, the cemetery is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Mexico.

One of the creepiest draws in the museum is the body of Ignacia Alguilar. During the cholera outbreak, people were buried as quickly as possible to prevent further spread of disease. Unfortunately, Ms. Aguilar suffered from a condition that made her heart stop temporarily. While it happened a number of times with no ill consequences, it finally did her in when relatives thought she really was dead and buried her alive. Her body was exhumed facing down, her forehead covered in scratch marks and her mouth filled with blood.

Waitomo Glowworm Cave, New Zealand

Despite the name, these caves don't actually contain any glowworms. Instead, they are home to Arachnocampa, a type of fungus gnat that was originally believed to be related to European glowworm beetles. Even so, the Arachnocampa are definitely the biggest draws at this attraction thanks to their lovely bioluminescence. This is enhanced by the silk threads the creatures spin around their nests, which capture the animal's natural glow, attracting insects which are trapped in the threads, and thus, providing dinner for the gnats.

Tourists come to visit the gorgeous glowing gnats and enjoy the stunning cave system itself, filled with ample stalactites and stalagmites. Organized tours even include a boat ride under the glowing gnats, which seems like the most romantic time anyone could have floating underneath a bunch of gnat nests.

Bolivian Witch Market

La Paz, Bolivia is already a pretty popular tourist destination as it is a beautiful city that also happens to be the administrative capital with the highest elevation of any country in the world -11,200 feet above sea level. But those that seek to find something stranger in their travels are also attracted to La Paz for a very different reason –the Witches' Market held in a mountain clearing just outside of town.

The market features nothing you would expect if you've only been around the witchcraft neo-pagan hippie markets popular in the States. No, this market is much more akin to what the witches of your traditional stories would need –dried animals, stone talismans, medicinal plants and potions of all types.

Perhaps the most famous offering in the market though is the dried llama fetuses, which are said to bring good luck when buried under the foundations of a new home. If you're seeking more immediate results though, you can always pay a local sorcerer to cast a spell or curse to help you overcome any potential adversity you happen to  encounter. No word on the love potions available, or if they're numbered up through nine.

Grutas Park

(Video Link)

Are Disneyland and Six Flags just too dull for you? Wish you could feel more intimidated when you visit a theme park? Well then you'd better head over to Lithuania where you can enjoy all the fun, excitement and adventure of a 1984 USSR gulag. Running through a maze of corridors, being "beaten" by a leather belt and being growled at by an angry German Sheppard are all part of the fun of this delightful historical theme park –all for under 40 Euros!

Ice Aquarium

Sure, it's fun to check out fish and other sea creatures swimming in aquariums, but if you're looking for something different and something nice and cool for the summer, then grab a parka and a plane ticket to Kesennuma, Japan where you can enjoy all the wonder of the world's only frozen aquarium.

Over 450 sea creatures, including crabs, fish, octopus and more, have been flash frozen and put on display in tightly packed squares of polished ice.  Of course, if you get hungry visiting the supermarket-turned-aquarium, there's a wonderful sushi restaurant just next door catering to all your chilled fresh fish cravings.

Source

Icelandic Phallological Museum

If you're one of those weirdos who would only end up looking at one part of the frozen sea creatures, perhaps you should skip Japan and instead head to Reykjavik, Iceland, where you can enjoy viewing over 276 penises from 46 different species at the Icelandic Phallological Museum. Whales, seals, bears, hamsters, homo sapiens and more all have their junk out for display at what is very likely one of the world's weirdest museums. Because Icelandic myth describes elves and trolls as being invisible, the museum also claims to have penises of these creatures –you just can't actually see them on display.

Thousands of visitors, mostly women, make it to the museum every year and it has gained such notoriety that it even was featured in a Canadian documentary called The Final Member.

Of course, if you're a man looking for something to do with his member once you leave this moral world, the museum is always looking for younger, bigger and better pieces to include in their collection.

Seattle Gum Wall

Perhaps the most unhygienic of all tourist destinations, the Seattle gum wall is exactly what it sounds like –a wall covered with gum in Seattle. This is the one attraction on this list that I have been to myself and I can tell you that really, the wall is more like an alley and while the attraction is admittedly pretty gross, the creativity and ingenuity of some of the gum placers is impressive. You'll find names spelled in gum, gum hanging from other pieces of gum, dangling from power lines and window sills, and gum fairly high up the walls of the alley –meaning someone actually scaled up the gum wall just to have gum higher than other people.

Dueling Mechanical Bulls

Posted: 04 Jul 2012 02:00 AM PDT

(Video Link)

The problem with mechanical bull riding is it’s not always obvious who is the winner and who is the loser. This project by the Madagascar Institute (motto: “Fear is never boring) solves that problem by making two identical mechanical bulls move according to one controller. The system throws off one competitor before the other and exposes the loser to abject humiliation. Which, as we all know, is right and fitting and proper.

P.S. I’ve just had a brilliant idea: never mind the treadmill desk. Let’s build a mechanical bull desk!

President Reagan on a Velociraptor

“Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall, or my velociraptor will do it for you!”

Here at Neatorama, we get accused of being too liberal or too conservative at least once a week. But here’s the thing -we don’t care about politics. We care about awesomeness, and no matter what side of the political spectrum you happen to be on, presidents riding dinosaurs are awesome.

The best thing about this piece by Jason Hauser is the level of detail. While it’s too small to see here, the saddle actually has a D.A.R.E. sticker and the gun is engraved with the name “Gipper.” Click on the link to enjoy Reagan and his dino friend in more detail. An Online Breaking Bad Art Show

Posted: 04 Jul 2012 12:06 AM PDT

We’ve featured a lot of artwork from Gallery 1988, and while it’s all pretty cool, the problem is that if you don’t live near L.A., you probably won’t be able to go see any of the shows yourself.

That’s why the Breaking Gifs art show is so awesome. It’s an online art show presented by Gallery 1988 and AMCm celebrating the awesomeness of Breaking Bad. The “exhibits” are presented in the shape of the periodic table of elements and only a few have been released so far, but all of the ones out there so far, including the chart above by Dave Perillo, are pretty darn awesome.

Carnivorous Plant That Eats Worms Underground

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 11:59 PM PDT

You’d never know by looking at their gorgeous flowers, but a rare planet
species called Philcoxia in Brazil are quite deadly … to underground
worms:

Botanists have found three plants, all relatives of the popular
snapdragon garden flowers, that have an unusual network of sticky leaves
underground.
These leaves allow the plants to trap and digest worms, and possibly
other creatures, that stray onto their sticky surfaces in the soil.

While there are many species of carnivorous plants that use insects,
frogs and even small mammals to supplement the nutrients they need to
grow, none have ever been found to trap their prey beneath the ground.

Botanists now believe there could be many other plants that use
this previously unrecognised method of killing and consuming animals.

Play Monopoly on the Streets of Chicago

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 11:30 PM PDT

Christopher Jobson writes:

I was walking in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood a few weekends ago when I happened upon an enormous stack of Monopoly 'Chance' cards made from plywood and bolted to the sidewalk announcing a marriage proposal at a nearby church. It was awesome. Immediately I started wondering if it was a genuine proposal? Was it a joke? Or could it be… ART?!

It was indeed art. A mysterious street artist who goes by the name Bored made enormous Monopoly spaces, cards, markers and dice and left them on sidewalks.

Pro tip: Chicago cops do not regard a Get out of Jail card as legally valid.

A Hot Air Balloon Shaped Like Darth Vader

This custom Sith Lord shaped hot air balloon is still casting the shadow of the Dark Side across the globe, flying high since 2007.

It was custom made for (surprise!) a huge Star Wars fan from the UK, who actually got approval from the crew at LucasFilm before making this beautiful hot air balloon.

The sweetest part about this custom balloon has to be the attention to detail, making the Sith Lord’s helmet easily discernible from miles away.

Glasses That See Blood

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 09:00 PM PDT

Tired of the nurse stabbing you because s/he can’t find a vein? These new glasses by 2AI Labs may help. They have color filters designed to spot blood. The developers anticipate that medical professionals will use them in three ways:

– (i) a vein-finder, or oxygenation-isolator, that amplifies perception of oxygenation modulations under the skin (and eliminates perception of variations in the concentration of hemoglobin),
– (ii) a trauma-detector, or hemoglobin-concentration-isolator, that amplifies perception of hemoglobin concentrations under the skin (and eliminates perception of variations in oxygenation), and
– (iii) a general clinical enhancer, or oxygenation-amplifier, that combines the best features of the first two; it eliminates neither signal (i.e., it retains perception of both variation in Hemoglobin oxygenation and concentration), and only amplifies perception of oxygenation.

Why Microsoft Fell Behind: Bureaucracy

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 04:00 PM PDT

Long before Apple got its mojo back, the king of the technology hill was Microsoft.

Microsoft simply dominated the PC industry, but it has recently fallen back. It (almost) missed the Internet Revolution, had a tablet that could've pre-empted the iPad and other innovative products that withered in the R&D vine.

What happened? Vanity Fair editor Kurt Eichenwald interviewed dozens of Microsofties and delved into troves of corporate emails to discover the culprit of the malaise that has plagued the tech giant for years: bureaucracy.

Eichenwald’s conversations reveal that a management system known as “stack ranking”—a program that forces every unit to declare a certain percentage of employees as top performers, good performers, average, and poor—effectively crippled Microsoft’s ability to innovate. “Every current and former Microsoft employee I interviewed—every one—cited stack ranking as the most destructive process inside of Microsoft, something that drove out untold numbers of employees,” Eichenwald writes. “If you were on a team of 10 people, you walked in the first day knowing that, no matter how good everyone was, 2 people were going to get a great review, 7 were going to get mediocre reviews, and 1 was going to get a terrible review,” says a former software developer. “It leads to employees focusing on competing with each other rather than competing with other companies.”

When Eichenwald asks Brian Cody, a former Microsoft engineer, whether a review of him was ever based on the quality of his work, Cody says, “It was always much less about how I could become a better engineer and much more about my need to improve my visibility among other managers.” Ed McCahill, who worked at Microsoft as a marketing manager for 16 years, says, “You look at the Windows Phone and you can’t help but wonder, How did Microsoft squander the lead they had with the Windows CE devices? They had a great lead, they were years ahead. And they completely blew it. And they completely blew it because of the bureaucracy.”

The Superstitious Stock Market Fund

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 03:00 PM PDT

Since investing in the stock market is a little bit like reading tea leaves, artist Shing Tat Chung decided to take it all the way: he has created a stock fund that trades on superstitions.

“We have to realise that actually when a lot of money is involved, we become a whole lot more irrational and superstitious,” Chung tells Co.Design. “We tend to resort to finding ridiculous patterns, creating conspiracy theories, and rituals.” He points to an example in England, where homes at addresses involving the number 13 are automatically devalued by a few thousand pounds.

A Superstitious Fund foregrounds how irrational humans--and their machines--can be. Chung calls the fund a “superstitious automated robot," programmed with human traits--like a belief in bad luck. The fund trades stock based on numerology, astrology, and a self-taught logic built on its successes and failures. So, it’s a non-living entity that makes random decisions just like your average irrational human would.

Chung got people to invest 5,000 in his fund, aptly called A Superstitious Fund, which began trading earlier this year: Link

How to Look Your Best the Morning After

The video is actually a public service announcement for Luke’s “Don’t Cover It Up” campaign against domestic abuse for the Refuge organization. She also did an interview about the making of the video.

The video depicts the domestic violence situation in an eerily realistic light, ending with onscreen copy that reads: “65% of women who suffer domestic violence keep it hidden. Don’t cover it up.” London agency BBH handpicked Luke to act in the PSA to reach her 439,8930 subscribers and the many other women who routinely seek out her online content. Luke said that she felt a personal attachment to the project from being in an abusive relationship herself.

University Sues Overachieving Student for Lost Income

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 12:00 PM PDT

Marcel Pohl was a student at the School of Economics and Management in Essen, Germany. But not for long -he passed 60 examinations and graduated in three semesters, when the normal course is 11 semesters. You’d think the school would be proud, but they are suing Pohl for €3,000, which is the tuition payments we would have made if he stayed as long as other students!

“When I got the lawsuit, I thought it couldn’t be true,” Pohl, who now works for a bank in Frankfurt, told the Bild newspaper. “Performance is supposed to be worth something.”

Pohl completed his turbo degree by dividing up all the simultaneous lectures with two friends and then swapping notes. At the same time, he completed an apprenticeship in a bank.

“We didn’t get any freebies, and we agreed our plans in advance with the school,” Pohl said.

“We’re always against slow students,” said his lawyer Bernhard Kraas. “But when someone hurries and finishes early, suddenly he has to pay. That can’t be right.”

The school says they are entitled to the full payment, which is for the degree, not the time spent achieving it. Link -via reddit

R.I.P. Andy Griffith

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 11:00 AM PDT

Andy Griffith, who most Americans know as Sheriff Andy Taylor from the long-running series The Andy Griffith Show, died this morning at his home in Roanoke, North Carolina.

Mr. Griffith was already a star, with rave reviews on Broadway in "No Time for Sergeants" and in Elia Kazan's film "A Face in the Crowd," when "The Andy Griffith Show" made its debut in the fall of 1960. And he delighted a later generation of television viewers in the 1980s and '90s in the title role of the courtroom drama "Matlock."

But his fame was never as great as it was in the 1960s, when he starred for eight years as Andy Taylor, the sagacious sheriff of the make-believe Southern town of Mayberry, running weekly herd on a collection of eccentrics like his ineffectual deputy, Barney Fife, and the simple-minded gas station attendant Gomer Pyle while, as a widower, patiently raising a young son, Opie.

"The Andy Griffith Show," Monday nights on CBS, was No. 4 in the Nielsen ratings its first year and never fell below the Top 10. It was No. 1 in 1968, its last season.

The New York Times has an extensive biography in their obituary notice. Griffith was 86 years old. Link

Hot Weather Causes Road to Buckle, Launches Car Into Air

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 10:00 AM PDT

[YouTube Clip]

How hot is it across most of the United States the past few days? Hot enough to buckle the road and send a car flying through the air!

The pavement buckled because of the heat Sunday, creating a ramp that led to an incredible scene which was caught on camera. It happened on Highway 29 near County T in Chippewa County.

"From the overpass we could see the big divots, but we'd stopped to take a picture of it because we'd seen a bunch of cars going over slowly, and scraping the underside of their cars. They were kind of lining up, checking the damage," said Theresa Reich from Eau Claire. Reich and her brother-in-law had stopped on that overpass to take a picture of Highway 29. What Theresa didn't realize was that as she tried to take a still picture of the pavement, the camera in her phone was already rolling... and it captured video of an SUV that went up the ramp, crossed the other lane of traffic, narrowly missed another vehicle... before coming to rest off the road.

Conservative Wunderkind is now a Liberal

Did you ever say something at 13 that you regretted later in life? At least you had the presence of mind not to get that captured on camera or social media for posterity, right?

What? It's on Facebook?! Well, at least you didn't get it on YouTube, right? What?

Well, at least you're not this guy:

Like so many teenagers, Jonathan Krohn says he cringes when he thinks of some of the deeply uncool things he said when he was 13. Unlike most teenagers, Krohn said those things on camera in a speech at the 2009 Conservative Political Action Conference, making him a YouTube sensation. Now? Krohn tells Politico's Patrick Gavin he's not a conservative anymore. He likes gay marriage and Obamacare. He's going to New York University in the fall. He name drops German philosophers. But his old fans can't accept that he's changed. "Come on, I was thirteen," he told Politico. "I was thirteen."

Sonic Booms Shatter Supreme Court Windows

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 07:00 AM PDT

The Praça dos Três Poderes (Three Powers Plaza) in Brasilia, Brazil, is that nation’s governmental seat, and the home of the world’s largest continuously-flown national flag. The flag is replaced every month with ceremony. On Sunday, that ceremony included a flyover by two Mirage 2000 fighter jets. Rarely do supersonic planes fly low enough to be seen for a display like this. What could possibly go wrong?

Although nobody was injured the fighter flew so low and fast that the shock wave they generated broke almost all the windows of Supreme Court glass facade.

In a statement, Brig Ar Kanitz Marcelo Damasceno, chief of the Center for Social Communication of the Força Aérea Brasileira (FAB), said that the Brazilian Air Force Command has initiated the investigation of the incident and will compensate the damage caused.

Wildman on Body Part Preferences (1963)
"The Relationship Between Knee and Arm Joints on Human Figure Drawings and Paranoid Trends," Robert W. Wildman, Journal of Clinical Psychology, vol. 19, no. 4, October 1963, pp. 460–1.

Wildman explains:

Some years ago a colleague pointed out that there was a connection between paranoid symptomatology and the drawing in of joints on arms and legs on human figure drawings. [A researcher named] Buck states that emphasis upon knees suggests the presence of homosexual tendencies. Over a period of time, this investigator was impressed with the frequent connection between these two variables. This study was designed to determine the validity of this hypothesis….

30 subjects who had drawn knee and arm joints on the figure drawing of the H-T-P [the House-TreePerson Technique] were matched with 30 subjects who had not drawn the joints. 4 psychologists rated each S for paranoid trends. Ss who had a high degree of paranoid symptomatology drew joints twice as often as those without prominent paranoid tendencies. However, drawing the joints should not be considered pathognomonic but it is a significant sign.

Wildman on Body Part Preferences (1976)
"Note on Males' and Females' Preferences for Opposite Sex Body Parts, Bust Sizes, and Bust-Revealing Clothing,"
Robert W. Wildman, Robert W. Wildman II, Archie Brown, and Carol Trice, Psychological Reports, vol. 38, 1976, pp. 485–6.

The authors, at Central State Hospital, Milledgeville, Georgia, explain:

In Study 1, 55 young women responded that they preferred men with hairy chests and circumcised penises. The chest was the male body part reported to be most "sexually stimulating" to females. The busts were the female body part most "sexually stimulating" to males (n = 34). In Study 2, men (n = 35) preferred larger busts than women typically possess on the average, but the women (n = 48) tended to overestimate the bust size most preferred by males. The ratings of bust-revealing clothing showed the males were more desirous of actually seeing the naked bust than females appear to realize.

Furnham on Preferable Female Body Parts (1990)
"Sex Differences in the Preferences for Specific Female Body Shapes," Adrian Furnham, Catherine Hester, and Catherine Weir, Sex Roles, vol. 22, nos. 11–12, 1990, pp. 743–54.

The purpose of this study was to examine the somatic preferences of males and females for detailed anatomical drawings of female stimulus figures to examine their ability to predict the preferences for members of the opposite sex. The figures were systematically varied on three dimensions (bust, waist, and hips), with three sizes of each (small, medium, and large). The 12 figures were rated by 100 male and female subjects on a 7-point bipolar construct scale, ranging from extremely attractive to extremely unattractive…. Male subjects displayed a preference for large busts and hourglass shapes, which are accurately predicted by the females.

Prantl and Gründl: Males Prefer a Larger Bust Size (2011)
"Males Prefer a Larger Bust Size in Women Than Females Themselves: An Experimental Study on Female Bodily Attractiveness with Varying Weight, Bust Size, Waist Width, Hip Width, and Leg Length Independently," Lukas Prantl and Martin Gründl, Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, vol. 35, 2011, pp. 693–702. The authors are at the University of Regensburg, Germany.

What determines a female figure as attractive and is there a consensus of both sexes in judging female bodily attractiveness? To answer these questions, an extensive experiment was conducted using highquality photographic stimulus material, several systematically varied figure parameters (weight, hip width, waist width, bust size, and leg length), and a large sample of 34,000 participants. The results showed that women prefer slightly wider hips, a narrower waist, and longer legs than men (highly significant but small effects). A clear difference was found with regard to the ideal bust size: 40% of men but only 25% of women preferred a large bust.
