Vintage Chinese Firecracker Label Art

Posted: 05 Jul 2012 04:10 AM PDT

The delightful artwork found on these vintage Chinese firecracker labels almost makes the contents seem even more fun, but that’s impossible right? More fun than fireworks, no way!

Now that I think about it some of these labels are a bit scary, so maybe the art is meant to serve as a warning against playing around with fireworks, like “be careful so you don’t end up like the poor sap on this label.”

Hit the link below to check out a massive Flickr gallery with over 300 beautiful examples of Chinese firecracker labels, they’re really neat!

17 Animals that Died During Our Lifetimes

Posted: 05 Jul 2012 02:36 AM PDT

The golden toad is pretty gorgeous. Too bad you’ll never see one in person. They went extinct in 1989:

Scientists aren’t totally sure what led to this Costa Rican toad’s decline, but the best theory is that the El Nino weather pattern along with global warming and airborne pollution dried up pools and ponds the toad lived in.

BuzzFeed has 16 other animals that have died during our lifetimes -and yes, even if you’re really young, most of these will still have died during your lifetime.

Dreamlike Paintings By Kent Williams

Posted: 05 Jul 2012 02:11 AM PDT

Kent Williams has long been one of my top ten favorite artists, and his uniquely styled paintings have graced both the covers of comic books and the walls of fine art galleries across the globe.

His latest series is full of surreal, dreamlike imagery surrounded by painterly strokework and a sort of deconstruction that makes the whole scene feel even more real.

Japanese Doctor Fabricated 172 Science Papers

Posted: 04 Jul 2012 11:59 PM PDT

A investigation by a panel set up by the Japanese Society of Anesthesiologists have discovered that a particularly productive doctor named Yoshitaka Fujii has been faking a whopping 172 papers over the past 19 years:

Fujii's findings have been under a cloud since 8 March when an analysis in the journal Anaesthesia raised questions about his data. On 9 April, 23 journal editors publicly asked seven Japanese institutions named in the papers to investigate. The anesthesiology society took on the task because "it would have been difficult for any one institution to clarify what happened," says Koji Sumikawa, an anesthesiologist at Nagasaki University who headed the investigation.

The panel focused on 212 of 249 known Fujii papers. It tried to review the raw data, laboratory notebooks, and records on the patients or animal subjects involved. Committee members also interviewed relevant people.

Among the 172 papers judged bogus, the report claims that 126 studies of randomized, double-blind, controlled trials "were totally fabricated." The committee identified only three valid papers. For another 37 papers, the panel could not conclusively determine if there had been fabrication.

That beat the record for faked scientific papers, previously set by Joachim Boldt (curiously, another anesthesiologist) who fabricated 90.

The Thief Who Stole A Dali Then Sent It Back

Posted: 04 Jul 2012 11:31 PM PDT

A brazen art thief recently stole Cartel de Don Juan Tenorio by Salvador Dali, valued at over $150k, from the Venus Over Manhattan Gallery in New York by distracting the guard and walking out with the piece in broad daylight. Then he sent it back.

The gallery put the word out about the thief, but didn’t expect to get the work back, until they received an anonymous email saying it had been sent back, and it was delivered to the gallery later that week via Express Mail.

Why would someone do such a thing? Your guess is as good as mine…

Squirrel-Tailed Dinosaur with Feathers

Posted: 04 Jul 2012 11:00 PM PDT

Scientists have found the fossil of a squirrel-tailed dinosaur with feathers that challenged the image of the dinosaurs as giant lizards:

Previously, paleontologists have found feathers only on coelurosaurs—birdlike dinosaurs that evolved later than so-called megalosaurs such as Sciurumimus.

Because Sciurumimus is not closely related to coelurosaurs, the new fossil suggests feathered dinosaurs were the norm, not the exception, Rauhut said.

"Probably all dinosaurs were feathered," he added, "and we should say good bye to the familiar image of the overgrown lizards."

Teenager Refused Family Tradition of Getting Breast Implants

Posted: 04 Jul 2012 10:09 PM PDT

Every
family has a black sheep. Meet Britney Marshall, a 14-year-old teenager
who is bucking the family tradition of getting breast implants:

Mrs Marshall, a 53-year-old mother-of-nine, believes the teenager
is going through a “funny phase”.
The mother and her four other girls, of Kirkby in Ashfiield, Notts,
boast a total of £50,000 worth of silicone breasts, the Daily
Mail reported.

Mrs Marshall has had four operations since 1996, which have increased
her bra size from 34B to 32GG while daughters Emma, 30, Terri, 27, Tara,
26, and Ripley, 21 have also had enhancements.

But Britney said: “I’m too young to be thinking about having
a boob job – I just want to work hard at school. I believe a girl should
do what she wants and at the moment I don’t want to get a boob job.

Taco Bell Delivered 10,000 Tacos to Alaska by Helicopter

Posted: 04 Jul 2012 09:00 PM PDT

So, we've been keeping tabs on the most important food news this century AKA the Taco Bell hoax-turned-PR-spectacle in the remote town of Bethel, Alaska. But if you didn't know, here's the synopsis:

Last month, residents of Bethel, Alaska (pop. 6,000) were super excited to hear the news that Taco Bell is going to open a restaurant there. That turned out to be a hoax, much to their disappointment.

Taco Bell caught wind of the news, and said that they'd come to the rescue.

And now, they did. In a big way:

As far as customer service stunts go, this one was pretty epic: A helicopter sent to a remote Alaska town bearing a Taco Bell truck, itself bearing ingredients for 10,000 Doritos Locos tacos.

9 Biggest Unsolved Mysteries in Physics

Posted: 04 Jul 2012 07:00 PM PDT

So now that scientists have discovered the elusive Higgs boson, what's left in physics? Don't worry, science geeks - there are a lot left for you to work on.

Natalie Wolchover of Life's Little Mysteries put forth the 9 Biggest Unsolved Mysteries in Physics. For example:

What is dark matter?
Evidently, about 84 percent of the matter in the universe does not absorb or emit light. "Dark matter," as it is called, cannot be seen directly, and it hasn't yet been detected by indirect means, either. Instead, dark matter's existence and properties are inferred from its gravitational effects on visible matter, radiation and the structure of the universe. This shadowy substance is thought to pervade the outskirts of galaxies, and may be composed of "weakly interacting massive particles," or WIMPs. Worldwide, there are several detectors on the lookout for WIMPs, but so far, not one has been found. [If Not Dark Matter, then What?]

A Soap Bubble Is the World’s Thinnest Display Screen

Posted: 04 Jul 2012 06:00 PM PDT

Do you remember Star Trek‘s holographic viewscreens that would disappear when not in use? We may have something like them in the near future. Researchers at the University of Tokyo have developed a system that projects images onto the surfaces of bubbles:

“It is common knowledge that the surface of soap bubble is a micro membrane. It allows light to pass through and displays the colour on its structure,” the lead researcher, Yoichi Ochiai from the University of Tokyo, wrote in his blog.

“We developed an ultra-thin and flexible BRDF [bidirectional reflectance distribution function, a four-dimensional function defining how light is reflected at an opaque surface] screen using the mixture of two colloidal liquids.”

Large Hadron Collider Mural

We're not the only one excited with the discovery of the Higgs boson with our Higgs Boson T-shirts! Artist Josef Kristofoletti has created a 82-feet tall mural of the Large Hadron Collider's ATLAS detector:

"The hardest part of the mural was painting the whole image with a slight perspective shift," Kristofoletti told Discovery News via email. "The detector appears closer on the left and farther on the right side of the mural.

"The actual signature of the Higgs event was the most exciting thing to paint since it is actually depicting something that is invisible."

What Else Happened on the Fourth of July?

Posted: 04 Jul 2012 07:30 AM PDT

The adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 is the moment recognized as the birth of the United States, and is the reason why we celebrate the date as Independence Day. The fact that it is so well known as just the Fourth of July is why we never move it to the nearest Monday like other holidays. But many other significant event took place on the date in different years. Many of them were planned for the date; others were coincidental.

JULY 4TH, 1817 – New York's Governor DeWitt Clinton, marks the 4th by breaking ground at Rome, NY for the building of the Erie Canal.

JULY 4TH, 1836 – The House of Representatives marks the USA's 60th birthday by passing a resolution recognizing the nation of Texas, a sister republic that has just fought its own war of independence from the tyrannical Mexican government.

JULY 4TH, 1848 – The cornerstone of the Washington Monument is laid at a public celebration of Independence Day in Washington, DC.
