These awesome murals by Ernest Zacharevic really make the buildings on which they’re painted come alive, and add a whimsical touch to the town.

Hungary’s Red Sludge Disaster Zone Two Years Later

Posted: 12 Jul 2012 02:48 AM PDT

There’s a section of Hungary known as the red sludge disaster zone, where the land was ravaged by toxic waste in 2010 and now looks like a surreal martian landscape devoid of human life.

The photos in this series were taken by Palíndromo Mészáros for American Photo, and they capture the colorfully barren nature of the ruined Hungarian landscape.

Hit the link below if you want to see the rest, they make a rather clear statement about the devastating effects a toxic waste spill can have on the environment.

Whether these lucky people will have the nerve to wear this freaky piece of television memorabilia around the Con is another matter entirely.

I’ll Buy All The Games You Have, Thanks

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 11:15 PM PDT

Remember when you were a youngster and you told yourself that it was ok that just just spent all of your savings on a video game because it was an “investment?” Well, for most of us, that was just a lie, but for one collector, that ended up being the truth -he just made $1.2 million for his gaming collection.

Of course, this was no ordinary collection. In fact, it actually contained every game ever made for every Sega, Nintendo and NEC system -a total of around 7,000 games, all of which came in the box complete with their instruction manual. Some of the games haven’t even been opened.

It puts your childhood collection to shame, doesn’t it?

Official Olympics Outfit of Team USA: Chic or Dud?

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 08:00 PM PDT

Photo: Ralph Lauren

Behold the official Olympics outfits for Team USA. Designed by Ralph Lauren, the official outfitter of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Teams, the new duds have got some people screaming foul:

Before they slip into something more comfortable, like say, leotards or weightlifting belts, Team USA will greet the world at the opening ceremony for the London Olympics in classic Americana style by Ralph Lauren.

Too bad they’re made in China — and that there’s a beret.
Men will wear navy blazers with the Olympic team patch, along with red, white and blue neckties and white pants. Women will pair the blazers with a white dress or skirt and a scarf.

Both blazers are emblazoned with the in-your-face “Big Pony” logo — a mistake say some branding experts and celebrity stylists.

And how much do they cost?

The price of all this made-in-China preppiness — if you for some reason want to buy it — $598 for the women’s blazer and $498 for the silk skirt. The men’s blazer is a staggering $795, flat front trousers $295 and nubuck shoes are $165. And that damn beret? $55.

Homeland Security’s New Molecular Scanner

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 06:00 PM PDT

Still fretting about privacy? Don't worry, it will soon be over. Big Brother will know everything about you with this new molecular scanner that sounds like it's straight out of Star Trek:

Within the next year or two, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will instantly know everything about your body, clothes, and luggage with a new laser-based molecular scanner fired from 164 feet (50 meters) away. From traces of drugs or gun powder on your clothes to what you had for breakfast to the adrenaline level in your body—agents will be able to get any information they want without even touching you.

And without you knowing it.

The technology is so incredibly effective that, in November 2011, its inventors were subcontracted by In-Q-Tel to work with the US Department of Homeland Security. In-Q-Tel is a company founded "in February 1999 by a group of private citizens at the request of the Director of the CIA and with the support of the U.S. Congress." According to In-Q-Tel, they are the bridge between the Agency and new technology companies.

Bloodsucking Parasite Named After Bob Marley

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 05:00 PM PDT

Photo: Elizabeth Brill

Scientists have certainly stirred it up some with this: they've named a parasite that feed on blood after the reggae legend Bob Marley.

Paul Sikkel, an assistant professor of marine ecology and a field marine biologist at Arkansas State University, discovered and just named after Marley a "gnathiid isopod"--a small parasitic crustacean blood feeder that infests certain fish that inhabit the coral reefs of the shallow eastern Caribbean. Sikkel named the species Gnathia marleyi. [...]

Sikkel said, "I named this species, which is truly a natural wonder, after Marley because of my respect and admiration for Marley's music. Plus, this species is as uniquely Caribbean as was Marley."

CDC’s Wedding Day Survival Guide

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 04:00 PM PDT

After warning the public about the dangers of zombies, the CDC decided to tackle something even more dangerous: weddings!

Emergencies could range from a tear in your wedding gown, tornado, health issues, monster-in-laws, or bridezilla on the loose. It’s important to be aware of the possible issues and to do your homework. Just like you know the risks of putting feuding family members in one room, you should also know to check the weather report.

You never know when Bridezilla might pop up. When dealing with an emotional bride, try to remember your loved one is probably stressed out and will soon return to her caring self after the wedding is over. Be supportive and have some bottled water from your emergency kit and a box of chocolate on hand.

Why You Should Drink Hot Tea in Hot Weather

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 03:00 PM PDT

Drinking hot tea when it's so hot outside seems like the complete opposite of what you should do, but it's not such a crazy idea.

This story by Joe Palca of NPR's Morning Edition explains why drinking hot tea on a hot day can help cool you down:

For my next installment, Morning Edition Executive Producer Madhulika Sikka asked me to explain why drinking hot tea cools you off on a hot day.

It does?

"Trust me," she said. "I'm Indian, I'm British. A billion Indians can't be wrong. They drink hot tea in hot weather." [...]

There are all sorts of receptors in all sorts of nerves, but the nerves in the tongue have a lot of one particular receptor that responds to heat. It's called the TRPV1 receptor, if anyone wants to know.

So when you eat or drink something hot, these receptors get that heat signal, and that tells the nerve to let the brain know what's going on.

When the brain gets the message "It's hot in here," it turns on the mechanism we have to cool ourselves off: sweating.

The Serial Hugger: Is It a Crime to Trick Strangers into Giving You a Hug?

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 02:00 PM PDT

Dozens of women in Des Peres, Missouri, have complained of being the victim of a serial hugger that the local press is calling "Jack the Gripper."

But how did the man con a hug from so many women? Here's how:

According to their reports, the alleged hugger typically approaches women while they are shopping by themselves, pretends to know them as a former neighbor, and then asks for a hug under the pretense that it is his birthday, Des Peres Detective Marshall Broughton said.

"He'd say, 'Hi, remember me? I lived down the street in the corner house. How ya been?'" Broughton said. "Obviously [the women] didn't remember him, but he did it so quickly and convincingly that they felt embarrassed that they didn't know him."

Des Peres police identified the man, who is 44, but did not arrest him because of uncertainty about whether his actions were criminal, Broughton said.

Man Finds His Car for Sale on eBay 42 Years after It Was Stolen

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 12:30 PM PDT

In 1970, Bob Russell’s ’67 Austin Healey 3000 disappeared after a date with the woman he’d eventually marry. But he never gave up on her and kept searching for the beauty for 42 years. Suspecting that the rare collectible car would be sold multiple times, he scoured online auctions for it. Finally, one morning, he saw his car for sale on eBay.

That was only the beginning of Russell’s struggle. Next, he had to convince the dealer that it was indeed his Austin Healey and that the dealer had to give it back to him:

Russell said the car’s vehicle identification number matched that of his Healey. In addition, he still had the original key and car title, as well as signed affidavits from friends, including the original owner, indicating that Russell had never sold the auto.

But one legal roadblock remained: He didn’t have a copy of the stolen-car report he filed back in 1970. [...]

Turns out the original stolen-car report he filed in Philadelphia wasn’t showing up at the National Crime Information Center because one VIN letter was entered incorrectly into the FBI’s computerized index of crimes.

But thanks to persistent detectives in Philadelphia, Russell said, the report finally was located.

Once he got his hands on a copy of the report, Philadelphia police were able to reactivate the file. That enabled the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to impound the car.

Russell and his wife, Cynthia, drove to LA on June 16 and took possession of the car two days later after paying roughly $600 in impoundment fees.

Town Turns Itself into a Virtual Library

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 10:30 AM PDT

Your town lacks space for a library? Try this virtual solution by Project Ingeborg in Klagenfurt, Austria:

An initiative called Project Ingeborg has placed 70 stickers equipped with QR codes and NFC chips in various locations around the town, Engadget reports. When you hold your smartphone up to one, it sends your browser to a website where you can download a free literary classic via Project Gutenberg or a similar public-domain service.

Here’s the cool part: In many cases, the book is relevant to the location where you can download it. So, according to the Project Ingeborg website, you can download a famous play about a man’s quest for salvation near the Cathedral, or a short story called “The Murderer” near the police station. And there are plans to expand the project beyond books, to include reference information, music, and works of art.

Indrani and Her Palace

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 09:00 AM PDT

Model and photographer Indrani Pal-Chaudhuri leads a charmed life of luxury, fame, and jet-setting. Yet she turned her 300-room ancestral mansion in India into a school for poor children, with special emphasis on boosting the potential of girls.

Attacking this problem has been a lifelong pursuit, Indrani says. To that end, she recently shot a short film called The Girl Epidemic, depicting a futuristic world in which girls are treated like an infectious disease. Shot in the slums of Mumbai, the film is the brainchild of New York ad agency Strawberry Frog, which produced the film for a nonprofit group, Project Nanhi Kali, that works to raise awareness for the plight of Indian girls. "We created a metaphor," Indrani says of the film, which shows men in white masks, swooping up girls and whisking them away from their homes. "The real situation is much more diabolical."

Indrani used the money she earned as a teenage model to open the school. Her father returned to India to run the facility full-time. Read more about Inrani and her work at The Daily Beast. Link

11 Amazingly Geeky Aquariums

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 05:10 AM PDT

Geeks manage to work their interests into everything these days, even fish tanks. If you're asking yourself, "how could an aquarium be geeky?" well then sit back and enjoy the nerdstravaganza of the world's geekiest fish tanks.

1. A Vintage Pinball Machine

(Video Link)

When the guys from the show Tanked were asked to make a special machine for a guy who loved old pinball machines and aquariums, they immediately suggested creating a functional pinball machine that also served as an aquarium. It was definitely a bit of a project, as you can see in the video, but the end result was simply amazing and something any gamer would love to have in his or her pad.

2. A Broken XBox 360

For those without the money or space for an old pinball machine, this Xbox aquarium by Blue Water Aquariums is a pretty sweet alternative. The small saltwater aquarium is home to live corals, fish, crabs, snails and shrimp. No word on how much it costs, but I'm willing to bet they'd custom make one for any geeky fish fan with enough cash.

3. An Old PC

(Video Link)

Instructables user pbecker83 had a PC that was too old to still do much computing, so he turned it into an aquarium. Best of all, because the glass doesn't take up much space inside the tower, the PC can still be turned on. To ensure the heat of the computer wouldn't hurt the fishes, he made sure to get tropical beta fish that are totally comfortable with the water reaching 78 degrees –which is as hot as the PC gets when on. Of course, since the computer is so old, he really only uses it as a webcam to capture the faces of people enjoying the tank.

4. Old iMacs

Of course, Apple users are just as happy to turn their old machines into aquariums and iMacs are particularly great for this purpose as they already have such great style. In fact, they are so popular they even have their own cute nicknames "Macquariums." BuzzFeed has a great gallery of these computer tanks.

5. An Old TV

For those who are addicted to TV rather than the internet, you can always convert an old, heavy wooden TV into a rather awesome aquarium. WikiHow has a very helpful set of instructions on the process for anyone trying to turn their old "boob tube" into a fish house.

6. SimCity-Inspired

If you can't get enough SimCity, then you may as well try putting your fish in a tank inspired by the same concept. An arcology is a large habitat designed to deal with massive population densities –that's sometime pretty important in SimCity and equally important in this tank. Unlike having one large tank of water, this design allows the fish to have privacy and feel like they are entering new environments whenever they enter one of the six rooms.

7. The Overpass

Ok, this now defunct coffee shop's tank might not technically qualify as geeky, but it was just too awesome not to include here. That's because this amazing tank actually consisted of two tanks connected by a giant overhead pipeline. It might look a little bit difficult for the fish to get into, but they did manage on occasion –although it would often take them days to make the journey.

8. USB Desktop Organizer and Alarm Clock

Need a fish tank for your office? Well, this USB Desktop Aquarium is pretty darn ideal. It is USB-powered, includes an alarm clock, low-voltage pump, an LED light, a temperature gauge and a small storage space. It also comes equipped with a sound machine that offers six different tranquil sounds from nature to help you and your fish mellow out after a stressful work day.

9. The R2-D2

What's a list of geeky things without something related to Star Wars? This R2-D2 tank is sure to please any fan of the movie as he actually moves his head and beeps when instructed to via vocal commands. Plus, his eye actually works as periscope that lets you watch the fish under water.

10. The Doctor Who-Theme

While this Whoquarium might not actually have a special tank, the décor that comes with it is something every Doctor Who fan will enjoy –a lovely blue TARDIS and stickers you can place on the front of the glass so it looks like Daleks and Weeping Angles are about to attack your fish.

11. LEGO Mario World

(vimeo Link)

Similarly, this Mario scene, created with LEGOs, may be inside of a regular old fish tank, but that certainly doesn't make it any less awesome. Just make sure your fish don't eat any mushrooms or they might not fit in the tank anymore.

Are any of you fish owners with geeky tanks? If so, tell us about them. Personally, my track record with fish is almost as bad as it is with growing plants, so I just admire other people's aquariums.
