French Cows Drink Wine

Posted: 15 Jul 2012 05:00 AM PDT

Studies show that happy animals provide better-tasting meat. Taking a cue from that idea, Languedoc-Roussillon winemaker Jean-Charles Tastavy and cattle farmer Claude Chaballier decided to experiment by giving beef cattle some wine with their feed.

"The cows appreciated the menu and ate with enjoyment," Tastavy said.

And now, the French cows are getting a daily oenological infusion – of up to two bottles each. Tastavy explains they've scaled the cattle's wine intake based on authorities' recommended drinking habits: "For a person, we know it's two or three glasses of wine a day. For a cow, that means 1 to 1.5 liters per day," Tastavy told the AFP.

But the wine wasn't boosting just the cows' spirits. The growers found it also improved their taste. Michelin-starred chef Laurent Pourcel had a taste of the "viande de luxe" – luxury beef – and hedges that there's a bustling market for it among a foodie crowd. It has a "very special texture, beautiful, marbled and tender, which caramelizes while cooking."

The beef from these cows is quite a bit more expensive than other beef, because the cost of feeding each cow tripled with the addition of wine. Link

Awesome Pencil Drawings By Paul Lung

Posted: 15 Jul 2012 04:00 AM PDT

I can’t believe the detail and accuracy found in these pencil drawings by Paul Lung, and I imagine that a cat would choose that exact same bow tie if given a choice.

Paul Lung clearly breathes the airs of artistry quite freely, his bronchial tubes full of dander and inspiration, and hopefully he isn’t allergic to his prized hairball pitching subjects.

A Film Festival For Cat Videos

Posted: 15 Jul 2012 02:17 AM PDT

Everyone knows that cat videos rule teh interwebs, with their silly box jumping tactics and love of cheezburgers, so it was only a matter of time before someone gave them their own film festival.

Minneapolis’ Walker Arts Center will be hosting the first ever Internet Cat Video Festival on August 30th, and it looks like a purrrrfectly fine festival to honor our feline friends.

Yes, little kittehs, you finally haz a cheezburger!

Y: The Last Man Fan Film

Posted: 15 Jul 2012 01:14 AM PDT

(YouTube Link)

This incredibly well made fan film is based on the Vertigo comic book Y The Last Man, which centers around an apocalyptic setting where everyone on Earth with a Y chromosome is wiped out, except for a guy named Yorick and a monkey named Ampersand.

The film is entitled Y:The Last Man Rising, it was made by IGN and Drake 1129 productions, and it does a great job of adapting the comic book into film format.

I don’t think Y would work very well as a feature film, but a TV series or a series of short films would be really fun to watch!

German Street Artist Gives Bridge A LEGO Makeover

German street artist MEGX, also known as Martin Heuwold, was commissioned to give this boring old bridge a LEGO brick makeover, and the end result was quite delightful as you can see in the picture above.

It took Martin a month to finish the whimsical makeover, with help from city workers, and it certainly adds a bit of color to that stony old town!

7-11′s Mashed Potato Dispenser

Posted: 14 Jul 2012 11:58 PM PDT

How you feel about this device will probably vary greatly depending on how you feel about 7-11′s other food. For example, if you think chili that slowly drips out of a vending machine is a great addition to your hot dog that’s been rolling in public view all day, then you’ll probably love these mashed potatoes. If that last sentence made you throw up in your mouth a little, well then, I wouldn’t recommend trying these.

This Fish Hook Is Also a Gun

Posted: 14 Jul 2012 10:00 PM PDT

There’s a tiny hole in the bottom of the shaft of this fish hook. When a fish yanks on the hook, it discharges a 4mm centerfire cartridge and, hopefully, shoots the fish.

These unusual guns were produced in the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries. If you can find one, I wouldn’t recommend using it, as doing so would almost certainly violate the second and fourth rules of gun safety.

The World’s Smallest Art Museum

No, it’s not some fly by night operation. Filip Noteradaeme’s Homeless Museum of Art is an established enterprise. Since 2003, it’s appeared at various locations around New York City. The clientele is highly selective–only two people can visit at the same time–so get your tickets ahead of time. Its collection is small, so you’ll have plenty of time to see everything. Browse through the HoMu’s website to help plan your visit.

My Little Pony Shotgun

Posted: 14 Jul 2012 07:30 PM PDT

I’m having trouble tracking down information about this shotgun. So far, I can find just one mention on Equestria Daily.

It’s not the first working MLP firearm we’ve seen. Last week, we saw a Smith & Wesson 1911 with the Rainbow Dash cutie mark inscribed on the grips. This shotgun of unknown provenance is similarly decorated with the symbol of Ponyville’s master flier.

Famous Dishes from Literature

Graphic designer Dinah Fried had a great idea for a photo series: meals from famous works of fiction. Pictured above is one from The Catcher in the Rye. Others at the link include Moby Dick and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

As much as I loved Watership Down, I doubt that photos of the characters’ meals would be interesting. So its absence is not a great loss.

Woman Robs Convenience Store with Curling Iron

Posted: 14 Jul 2012 04:30 PM PDT

It’s a gripping true crime story that will curl your hair. A woman in Kingsport, Tennessee walked into a convenience store and robbed it. She was armed with a (presumably cool) curling iron concealed in her hoodie:

The clerk, who would later identify the suspect by first name, said Yates pointed an item which was concealed inside her hoodie’s pocket, acting as if it were a weapon. She allegedly demanded money, which was handed over, then left the store.

Approximately eight minutes later Yates was located jogging through a nearby parking lot. She was stopped by KPD Officer Andrea Mullins and positively identified as the suspect.

A pat down located a wad of cash in Yates’ sweatpants. Meanwhile a curling iron, believed to be the “weapon” Yates had in her hoodie pocket, was found in bushes outside the Sunoco.

Sex in the Olympic Village

Posted: 14 Jul 2012 09:00 AM PDT

What happens when you put 10,000 excited, young, attractive, healthy athletes together in one place without parents or journalists? You’re exactly right.

Home to more than 10,000 athletes at the Summer Games and 2,700 at the Winter, the Olympic Village is one of the world’s most exclusive clubs. To join, prospective members need only have spectacular talent and — we long assumed — a chaste devotion to the most intense competition of their lives. But the image of a celibate Games began to flicker in ’92 when it was reported that the Games’ organizers had ordered in prophylactics like pizza. Then, at the 2000 Sydney Games, 70,000 condoms wasn’t enough, prompting a second order of 20,000 and a new standing order of 100,000 condoms per Olympics.

Many Olympians, past and present, abide by what Summer Sanders, a swimmer who won two gold medals, a silver and a bronze in Barcelona, calls the second Olympic motto: “What happens in the village stays in the village.” Yet if you ask enough active and retired athletes often enough to spill their secrets, the village gates will fly open. It quickly becomes clear that, summer or winter, the games go on long after the medal ceremony. “There’s a lot of sex going on,” says women’s soccer goalkeeper Hope Solo, a gold medalist in 2008. How much sex? “I’d say it’s 70 percent to 75 percent of Olympians,” offers world-record-holding swimmer Ryan Lochte, who will be in London for his third Games. “Hey, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.”

ESPN magazine talks to several athletes who don’t mind spilling the beans about the real games that go on in the Olympic Village every two years. Link -via Breakfast Links

Don’t Eat Raw Crawfish

Posted: 14 Jul 2012 07:00 AM PDT

Doctors in the St. Louis area were puzzled by nine cases of paragonimiasis, a rare condition in which a parasite infects a patient’s lungs. The cases were unrelated to each other and spread over several years -and a further seven cases were found from other parts of Missouri. An investigation by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) uncovered what was happening. Apparently, some people who camp or raft on Missouri’s rivers drink too much alcohol. Some get so drunk that they eat raw crawfish found in the river. The crawfish can carry a parasitic fluke, which is killed when food is cooked. But if ingested raw, the fluke can make its way from the digestive system to a person’s lungs. This process can take months, and by the time a patient shows symptoms, it is difficult to trace the source of the infection.

Scientists from the CDC called in to help with the disease investigation were initially puzzled. Not by the disease so much, which is fairly common in Asian countries where raw crustaceans are part of the cuisine, but by why so many people were eating crawfish in Missouri.

Before the rash of illnesses here, there had been seven cases in all of North America in the previous 40 years.

Weil said a scientist at the CDC, which is in Atlanta, said to him, “In Georgia, we go canoeing and we see crawfish. It never occurred to me to eat one. What’s wrong with you people?”

Doctors think the known cases may be just the tip of the iceberg. However, the condition is treatable when properly diagnosed. Link -via Fark

This Week at Neatorama

Posted: 14 Jul 2012 06:00 AM PDT

ComiCon in San Diego is happening this weekend, and our roving geeks reporters Jill and Zeon will be soaking up the atmosphere (eww) to pass along to Neatoramanauts who are interested. No word on what costumes they’ll be sporting. Honestly, I’m afraid to ask. Meanwhile, the rest of us deal with things like garden produce (I’m up to my neck in beans, cucumbers, and tomatoes) and back to school (I have two kids starting high school in three weeks). But we will continue to provide you with the best stories, pictures, links, and videos from all over the internet. And then there’s our exclusive feature stories, which you’ll want to catch up on if you happened to miss any.

Despite making plans to attend ComiCon, Jill Harness was busy this week, and gave us a list of 11 Amazingly Geeky Aquariums.

She also wrote 6 Famous Misquotes & Where They Came From.

Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader gave us the story of the Queen of the Jail.

Why I Will Never Have a Girlfriend http://www.neatorama.com/2012/07/10/why-i-will-never-have-a-girlfriend  / came from the Annals of Improbable Research.

And mental_floss magazine gave us 10 Presidents Nobody Remembers.

Our Caption Contest this week involves a snoozing cat. The contest is still open -but not for long! Get your entry in, and don’t forget to read the rules.

In the What Is It? game this week, there were a lot of good guesses, but so far no one was been able to determine exactly what the mystery object is, including the What Is It? blog -and the original manufacturer! Thanks for many good leads, but none have been verified. The funniest answer was from Jared, who surmised that this is a modified vacuum pump, with a hole added as "a rudimentary eyeball extraction device. It's really the only possible explanation." That's worth a t-shirt! Find the answers to the other items of the week at the What Is It? blog.

John Farrier has given NeatoBambino a geeky streak this week, with posts on kids going to ComiCon, a Star Wars bassinet, and a video called Baby's First Lightsaber Duel. There’s some practical stuff, too, at NeatoBambino.

Some of the posts this week were quite provocative. The biggest discussion came in the comments after So, Do You Believe in Global Warming Now? The answer is apparently “no.” In second place was Official Olympics Outfit of Team USA: Chic or Dud? and Medical Marijuana Without the High was in third place with enough comments to make it first any other week. Those comment threads are still open if you want to join in!

The NeatoShop is stocked and ready for Back To School season with all kinds of items that will make your kids the envy of his/her class (just the ego boost they’ll need for a new school year). And they won’t be able to lose them, because no one else will have anything like it!

Remember, you’ll find extra content and discussions at our Facebook page, and make sure you are following Neatorama on Twitter, too -and now Neatorama is on Google+ and Pinterest!
