Most people remember when they first heard a song that speaks to them or heard a news event. Since my brother ran a family restaurant business for nearly 30 years I tend to remember the first time I ate certain foods or dined at specific establishments. Sometimes the experience was good while other times the experience was memorable for not being so pleasant. Occasionally, there might be some odd event that occurred to keep that memory fresh.
One thing that I will never forget was a trip I made to our headquarters in Minneapolis about 12 years ago, when I was working for what was then known as U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray. The U.S. Bank HQ was a new, large, beautiful building and it was about 9AM or so when I walked in for the first time. Needing a caffeine jolt I took the elevator to the floor with some places that were fast service food businesses. I saw a short line at Caribou Coffee but a long line at something called Jamba Juice (NASDAQ – JMBA - $2.55). I found it odd that a smoothie establishment would attract such business in the dead of winter at 9:00 AM. I decided to try it out and was hooked. Although there are no locations where I live, I have been a follower of the stock ever since it went public six years ago, recalling that first, tasty beverage.

A Great Idea
As a parent of 3 children, including 2 teenagers and a pre-teen, I find myself frequently engaged in conversations with other parents regarding kids' use of technology, social lives, social media, and social networking. I know I am beating a dead horse when I say that it certainly seems more complicated to be a teenager these days than when many of us were growing up. Issues such as predators, bullying through cyberspace, inappropriate and unlawful mobile phone usage, and access to dangerous information are all real issues in the early part of the 21st century.
While each set of parents (let alone a single parent) may have differing philosophies and approaches to this topic, they are in lockstep agreement that these are issues that must be addressed. Unfortunately, while some of the subject matter is addressed by parents and school administrators and teachers, other steps need to be taken.
