Midyear Sales Milestones

2012 midyear U.S. music sales numbers revealed some positive news. According to Nielsen SoundScan, digital album and digital single sales were up 14 percent and 6 percent respectively at July 1.

Adele's "21" and Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know" are midyear's bestselling album and digital song respectively – selling 3.7 million and 5.5 million. Impressively, Gotye's feat marks the first time a digital song has sold five million in a calendar year's first six months!

At midyear, 47 digital tracks sold more than one million copies. 15 of those songs also sold two million downloads, six sold three million, three topped four million, and two sold five million copies (Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know" (featuring Kimbra) and Fun.'s "We Are Young."

Digital Music Royalties Up

In 2012's first quarter, more than $100 million in royalties were paid to artists and music companies for the streaming of their digital tracks on Internet radio and other online services - the most digital royalties of any quarter yet! In total, $1 billion has gone to musicians and labels during the past 12 years since SoundExchange, a nonprofit organization that collects and distributes digital performance royalties, was founded.

According to Billboard.com the top digital downloads for the week of July 21 are:

Songs:

# 1 – "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen
# 2 – "Wide Awake" by Katy Perry
