eBay Bans the Sale of Magic Items, NeatoShop Still Wizard-Friendly

potionDo you need a magical potion or spell? eBay is not the place for you. Starting this Fall, it's banning the sale of magic items:

The following items are also being added to the prohibited items list: advice; spells; curses; hexing; conjuring; magic; prayers; blessing services; magic potions; healing sessions; work from home businesses & information; wholesale lists, and drop shop lists.

In contrast, at the NeatoShop, we sell a magical unicorn mask.

Need a curse or a hexing? Maybe we can work something out. Make us an offer.

Cooking with Power Tools

The kitchen and the workshop were never meant to be separate rooms. You can use your power tools to make cooking and cleaning so much faster. Here's a video showing tricks you can do with a cordless drill, including grating cheese and grinding pepper.

This is a great idea! I'll see if I can replace a pizza slicer with a circular saw. They're basically the same tool.

Daring Escape from the Zoo

Posted:

It was a daring escape that's bound to be told as legend for generations to come. Here's a story that seems like it's straight out of a Hollywood movie:

The Rheinböllen Wildlife Park in western Germany isn't exactly Alcatraz, but getting out isn't easy either. The word around the troughs at mealtimes is that you need to get through two fences to reach the freedom of the surrounding forest.

Three kangaroos made it at the weekend with the help of a young fox and a wild boar that were trying to break in, an official said on Tuesday.
The boar made a hole in the fence surrounding the park and the fox dug its way under another fence into an enclosure where the kangaroos were kept.

The marsupials, whose names are Jack, Mick and Skippy, didn't hang around. They hopped off into the night and managed to get 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the park when a passerby spotted them. The last one was caught late on Monday.

Joy at the Gorilla Reunion

Posted:

After being separated for 3 years, 13-year old Silverback gorilla Kesho was reunited with his 9-year old brother Alf. And their joy of being reunited was immediately apparent:

Longleat [Safari Park] keeper, Mark Tye, said: "The keepers from Dublin weren't entirely sure the brothers would even know each other, but the moment they met you could just see the recognition in their eyes."

Conservationist and chairman of the APE Alliance Ian Redmond, remarked:

"What you're seeing is exactly what you think you're seeing," he said. "Two intelligent social mammals, who were separate, are pleased to see each other again and play together. It is gorilla joy, being reunited with someone you used to have good times with and now you can again, so it's gorilla happiness"

They're not so different from us, after all! The BBC has the slideshow: Link

Secret to Karate Expert's Powerful Chop: It's the Brain!

Posted:

Hi-yah! Karate experts are able to generate extremely powerful punches - much more powerful than what could've been generated by muscle strength alone - so what's their secret?

Turns out, it's all in the brain:

The study, published in the journal Cerebral Cortex, looked for differences in brain structure between 12 karate practitioners with a black belt rank and an average of 13.8 years’ karate experience, and 12 control subjects of similar age who exercised regularly but did not have any martial arts experience. [...]

Brain scans showed that the microscopic structure in certain regions of the brain differed between the two groups. Each brain region is composed of grey matter, consisting of the main bodies of nerve cells, and white matter, which is mainly made up of bundles of fibres that carry signals from one region to another. The scans used in this study, called diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), detected structural differences in the white matter of parts of the brain called the cerebellum and the primary motor cortex, which are known to be involved in controlling movement.

The differences measured by DTI in the cerebellum correlated with the synchronicity of the subjects’ wrist and shoulder movements when punching. The DTI signal also correlated with the age at which karate experts began training and their total experience of the discipline. These findings suggest that the structural differences in the brain are related to the black belts’ punching ability.

This is a single-shot, muzzle-loading flintlock pistol. Reloading it takes a long time, but the user may not have much time. That's why the makers of this late Eighteenth/early Ninteenth Century Ottoman Albanian pistol built a club into the handle. Fire your shot, reverse the gun, then start swinging.

Restaurant Offers Discount if You Check Your Cell Phone at the Door

Posted:

Do you fiddle with your cell phone while eating at a restaurant? Owner and chef Mark Gold of Eva Restaurant is waging a brave battle against "distracted dining" with this new policy: a 5% discount if you check your cell phone at the door.

"For us, it's really not about people disrupting other guests. Eva is home, and we want to create that environment of home, and we want people to connect again," he explained. "It's about two people sitting together and just connecting, without the distraction of a phone, and we're trying to create an ambience where you come in and really enjoy the experience and the food and the company."

Gold said instating the suggestion reminds him to keep cell phone usage at bay, too. "I'm guilty of it as well. When [my wife and I] go to dinner it seems like the cell phone is part of the table setting now. Every table you look at, it's a wine glass, the silverware and the cell phone," he joked.

Brain's Sewer System

Posted:

Like the saying goes, everybody poops. Even your brain. But how does the brain get rid of its waste? Researchers have just discovered the mechanism: a "cleansing river" inside the brain that flush away waste.

In most of the body, a network of vessels carry lymph, a fluid that removes excess plasma, dead blood cells, debris and other waste. But the brain is different. Instead of lymph, the brain is bathed in cerebrospinal fluid. For decades, however, neuroscientists have assumed that this fluid simply carries soluble waste by slowly diffusing through tissues, then shipping its cargo out of the nervous system and eventually into the body's bloodstream. Determining what's really going on has been impossible until recently.

In this study, researchers led by U.R. neuroscientist Maiken Nedergaard have identified a second, faster brain-cleansing system. Nedergaard an expert in non-neuronal brain cells called glia, has long suspected that these cells might play a role in brain cleansing.

Burglar Wearing GPS Monitor Caught

Posted:

DaCostaKristen DaCosta of Somerset, Massachusetts, was ordered to wear an ankle bracelet as a condition of her probation, but didn't realize that police could track her movements with it. Detectives say they have evidence left by her monitor that she entered a home in Somerset and stole jewelry.

"She didn't destroy the place. She did not ransack it. But she certainly left her electronic fingerprint on the place for us. This lady was on a GPS monitoring device," said Chief Jospeh Ferreira of the Somerset Police Department.

Wait, it gets better.

Police told NBC 10 DaCosta was also sneaking through other neighborhoods, suspecting of breaking into at least a dozen homes all over Southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

DaCosta is charged with at least 17 break-ins while wearing the monitor, including burglaries in New Bedford, Dartmouth, Fairhaven and Tiverton.

Yes, she wore a GPS during 17 criminal acts before the police picked her up. In fact, this particular burglary occured two months ago, and the homeowner just recently realized the jewelry was missing. It's no wonder DaCosta thought she'd get away with it. Link -via Arbroath

DIY Bionic Arms

Posted:

Fifty-one year old Chinese fisherman Sun Jifa lost both of his arms when a homemade bomb he was making for blast fishing detonated prematurely. He couldn't afford prosthetic limbs, so he decided to build his own. After eight years of planning and scrounging scrap materials, he has built his own bionic arms.

Sun spent eight years making prototypes before finally creating a pair of metal hands which can grip and hold thanks to a series of wires and pulleys inside the shell.

'I control them with movements from my elbows and I can work, love normally and feed myself just like anyone else,' explained the real life tin man.

Maijishan Grottoes

Seven thousand Buddhist sculptures grace the caves and a sheer rock cliff face of the Maijishan Grottoes in Gansu Province, China. The work on these carvings took hundreds of years, peaking around 500AD, but continued until the beginning of the 20th century. Some are carved out of the cliff itself, some are made of clay, and some rock sculptures have been brought in from elsewhere.
