Taberna Moe's

Posted:

In Spain, The Simpsons is so popular that the reruns are broadcast several times a day. It's no wonder a tavern owner wanted his establishment to be Moe's. But when the pull-down door is closed, Homer is upset! This picture was posted by redditor jparrai, who deleted a reference to the bar's location because he doesn't want any infringement trouble to come to the business owner. Link

May I suggest some Nutella icing? And possibly some Nutella filling injected into the center? You can't be too careful. You won't want to end up insufficently Nutellad.

Some Actually Useful Dog Tricks

Posted:

(Video Link)

I know, I recently claimed that this was the most useful dog trick ever, but for those who hate cleaning even more than they hate going to the fridge to get another beer, Jesse has you covered. Of course, if you manage to get a hold of a dog that masters all of these tricks, then you'll only have to get off the couch to go to the bathroom -hopefully that's one thing no one is lazy enough to train their dog to take care of.

Caramel Apple & Cotton Candy Donuts? Yes, Please!

Posted:

What can a donut chain do to get people away from the state fair and into their shop? Offer donuts inspired by fair food, of course. That's why Krispy Kreme recently released two new flavors -caramel apple and cotton candy. Don't forget to wash it down with a cotton candy chiller or a caramel latte.

Excuse me while I go put on some pants with a more stretchy waist.

Is Faking Your Own Death a Crime?

Posted:

Double Jeopardy movie posterFor the moment, I won't inquire why you're asking this question. Let's simply address the matter at hand. According to researchers at Life's Little Mysteries, it might not be a crime to fake your own death:

"I am unaware of any federal statute that would apply to an individual who fakes their own death," FBI spokesman Bill Carter told Life's Little Mysteries.

In fact, according to missing person search-and-rescue expert Jeff Hasse, president of the Minnesota-based company Midwest Technical Rescue Training Associates, the right to disappear often causes conflicts between families of missing persons and law-enforcement agencies. Families think police investigators should do more to search for their missing loved one. "Law enforcement's response is, 'He's an adult. He can go missing if he wants to,'" Hasse told Life's Little Mysteries. If there's no evidence of foul play involved, sheriffs may not pursue a missing adult. [...]

"Pseudocide (faking one's own suicide) isn't inherently a crime," said James Quiggle, director of communications for the Coalition Against Insurance Fraud in Washington, D.C. "But it involves so many built-in frauds that it's virtually impossible to legally fake your drowning. Frankly, you'll only be drowning in fraud.

USS Constitution to Sail Once Again

Posted:

USS Constitution

Launched in 1797, the frigate USS Constitution is the oldest vessel in active service in the United States Navy. Since 1881, it has sailed without the aid of tugs only once. Tomorrow, it will do so again to mark the 200th anniversary of its battle with HMS Guerriere:

During Sunday's sail, the Constitution's crew of about 65, accompanied by 150 sailors selected to be part of event, will unfurl four of its 36 sails, Neely said. The tugs will stand by as a precaution when the Constitution sails on its own. And the trip can't happen unless the weather conditions are right.

The ship won't move in winds less than five mph and anything over about 15 mph would put too much stress on the vessel, Neely said. But the forecast looks favorable.

The lengthy work in preparation for Sunday's sail was largely on the Constitution's aesthetics, though the masts were restored, Neely said. The crew also underwent extensive training on how to handle a vessel that's unlike any other in the U.S. Navy.

Fake Twitter Followers

Posted:

Twitter fakers

Any Twitter user knows that there are a lot of spam accounts. Some mainly post advertising Tweets; others are just accounts created to boost someone else's following. You can even buy Twitter followers. But now there's an app to find out how many of your followers are fake. PLUS you can find out how many of someone else's followers are fake. And that's just what Business Insider did -they analyzed the Twitter accounts of online celebrities who have record numbers of followers. They found huge numbers of those followers are fake accounts. Now, that doesn't mean the celebrity has been buying them; it could mean spam accounts tend to attach themselves to celebrities, or it could be a combination of both. I used my account as an example here, because I'm not a Twitter celebrity (and it shows). Link -via Metafilter

Vintage Photographs of Chinese Women

Manchu hairstyle

A collection of photographs at Environmental Graffiti gives a glimpse into the lives of women in China in the 19th century. About this photograph:

To create those amazing ‘wings’, the hair was wrapped around a piece of wood at the back. “The [Manchu] style is simple and graceful, and must have been designed, one would almost think, to represent horns, enabling the wearer to hold her own against her antagonistic husband,” joked photographer John Thomson, who took many 19th-century Chinese photographs, including this one from 1869.

Customs and fashions varied from Formosa to Manchuria to the enclaves of minority tribes. Read about each with the photographs. Warning: bound feet. Link

Photosynthetic Aphids

Posted:

Image: Shipher Wu and Gee-way Lin/National Taiwan University - via Wikipedia

Photosynthesis, the process of by which light energy is captured from the sun and turned into chemical energy, as any school children know, is what plants do every day. But scientists have discovered that an animal that may actually be able to do it:

The biology of aphids is bizarre: they can be born pregnant and males sometimes lack mouths, causing them to die not long after mating. In an addition to their list of anomalies, work published this week indicates that they may also capture sunlight and use the energy for metabolic purposes.

Aphids are unique among animals in their ability to synthesize pigments called carotenoids. Many creatures rely on these pigments for a variety of functions, such as maintaining a healthy immune system and making certain vitamins, but all other animals must obtain them through their diet. Entomologist Alain Robichon at the Sophia Agrobiotech Institute in Sophia Antipolis, France, and his colleagues suggest that, in aphids, these pigments can absorb energy from the Sun and transfer it to the cellular machinery involved in energy production.

You might argue that dogs can feel shame, or maybe they just seem to be particularly aware when you're angry with them. In any case, putting a sign on them to tell the world of their shame probably won't change the dog's behavior, but it does make for some funny pictures! The Tumblr blog Dogshaming collects those photos to share with the world. Oh yes, and it features the occasional cat, too. Submission are welcome, and critical comments will be posted for public shaming. Link -via Metafilter
