Greetings!

Our healing heroes move all around the country as they progress through their recovery.
It is not unusual for one of our participants to have three or four different addresses
during his recovery. Why does this happen?

They are sent to a major military facility upon arrival back in the States, and
they can either remain there for a while or be shipped to another facility specializing
in the trauma or wounds they received. Most move on to a rehab facility and then
go back and forth to the hospital when remaining surgeries are scheduled.

When they have healing time or "wait and see" situations, many times they are granted
home leave, and while not always the case, doctors try to let them be home for major
holidays.

We keep up with them so you don't have to.

Today I am asking you for help. Once a year I personally run the 10K portion of
the Marine Corps Marathon to raise money for OperationPAL. The race this year will
occur on October 28 in Washington, D.C., so I am training now. I am a volunteer
and pay all my own expenses for the trip, so anything you donate goes directly into
the program. Any amount small or large will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in
advance for your kindness!

Participant Spotlight
Corporal Chris, 3/5 Lima

Cpl Chris was injured in 2010, as were many others in the 3/5 "Dark Horse" Battalion.
He lost both of his legs and the use of his left hand. In all the therapies and
treatments, he looked for something that would give him freedom and a feeling of
accomplishment.
He used to love soccer and the ability to run. Although he's working with prosthetics,
he found he feels most comfortable in the water. His upper body strength is great,
and even though he can't use his left hand, the arm can propel him through the water.
He is fast, and swimming has helped him set goals.
For the third straight year, the Marine Corps has captured the Chairman's Cup at
the Warrior Games, an annual competition for those from all branches of service
who are recovering from the injuries and trauma of war. Many of our OperationPAL
participants have made the trip to compete and have done very well.
This year, Cpl Chris was right there to help bring home the cup. He won a silver
medal in the Men's 50-Meter Freestyle, Double Amputee and brought home the individual
gold in the Men's 100-Meter Freestyle, Double Amputee. Ooh Rah, Chris!

Where Are They Now?

LCpl. John , 2/3

What is John doing all these years later? "Raising Kane"

John was shot three times, the last one being in the head in 2006 and was not originally
expected to live. Somebody forgot to tell him that. His Mother even wrote a book
about "My Miracle Marine."

We featured John and Chrissa's wedding in last year's August 19 OperationPAL Newsletter,
and here we are a year later celebrating the arrival of baby Kane. Congrats go out
to the whole family. Thanks John and Chrissa for sharing your blessed event with
us!

Mission Statement & Thank You

Operation PAL provides support -- through prayers and letters from the general public
-- to Marines and Corpsmen who have been injured or become ill while serving in
combat zones. This outreach program encourages support of our wounded heroes in
communities throughout the United States.

Thank you so very much for remembering our wounded and ill when you write and pray.
Your kindness is most appreciated!
