Google launches ad-supported YouTube app for Apple's iOS Weeks after Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) said it would remove YouTube as a preloaded application integrated into its iOS 6 platform, Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) is introducing a new standalone version of the video service optimized for the iPhone and iPod, complete with paid advertising. According to Google, the new YouTube app for iOS features thousands of new videos, a new touchscreen-enabled channel guide and improved search and discovery features. Users can share content via Google+, Facebook or text message from directly within the app; videos may also be shared over Twitter and email. "We're working on an optimized version of the YouTube app for iPad in the coming months, and stay tuned for more details," said Andrey Doronichev, who heads Google's YouTube mobile efforts. A Google spokesperson confirmed to Reuters that the YouTube app also will incorporate advertising. Google already includes ads on its YouTube mobile website and in its dedicated app for the Android operating system. The preloaded YouTube app was a staple of the iOS platform since Apple introduced its first iPhone in mid-2007. But relations between Apple and Google have soured considerably since that time as each battles the other for mobile supremacy, and early last month, Apple said it would remove YouTube with the new iOS 6. "Our license to include the YouTube app in iOS has ended," an Apple spokesperson said at that time. "Customers can use YouTube in the Safari browser, and Google is working on a new YouTube app to be on the App Store." Earlier this summer, Apple also ended its longstanding reliance on Google Maps information, unveiling an in-house mapping service that will go live with iOS 6. Mobile device owners view 1 billion YouTube videos each day. YouTube is now the largest source of mobile data traffic across all international markets, accounting for more than 25 percent of total network data in some regions, according to a report issued in April by broadband equipment vendor Sandvine. The video site generates 27 percent of all North American data traffic, Sandvine adds. The YouTube for iOS app hits the App Store just one day before Apple is expected to unveil the newest version of the iPhone. Amazon expands Kindle Fire in-app purchases to include physical goods Amazon is introducing new in-app purchase options enabling Kindle Fire software developers to sell and ship physical goods to consumers. Game publisher Activision is leveraging the new feature in the 99-cent Kindle Fire version of its Skylanders Cloud Patrol. Players can purchase physical Skylanders toys via Amazon's 1-Click Purchasing option, and the digital retail giant will mail the product to the consumer. Buying a toy also unlocks a digital character within the game. The introduction of in-app physical product sales further differentiates Amazon's Appstore for Android from Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) rival Play storefront and Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) App Store, both of which limit in-app merchandising to digital content like in-game currency and power-ups. Amazon recently announced that the number of developers building apps for Appstore for Android has more than doubled over the last year, crediting the growth to monetization features like 1-Click Purchasing and adding that the average in-app transaction now yields more than twice the revenue of the average premium app transaction. | | Players can purchase physical Skylanders (pictured) toys via Amazon's 1-Click Purchasing option, and the digital retail giant will mail the product to the consumer. | Amazon introduced three new Kindle Fire HD tablets last week: An 8.9-inch large-screen, LTE-equipped model priced at $499, as well as Wi-Fi-enabled 7-inch ($199) and 8.9-inch versions ($299) without LTE functionality. The devices offer access to more than 22 million Android applications, e-books, movies, TV shows, songs, audiobooks and magazines. Gaming is a major component of the Kindle Fire platform. The new tablets introduce Whispersync for Games, which syncs the player's place in the game and saves unlocked levels, backing up all progress in the cloud for gameplay across multiple devices. Additional gaming enhancements include a gyroscope and accelerometer for full tilt and turn controls, as well as social gaming features like group leaderboards and achievements. "We want to make money when people use our devices, not when they buy our devices," said Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos. "If somebody buys one of our devices and puts it in a desk drawer and never uses it, we don't deserve to make any money." Verizon teams with McAfee, Asurion for Android security app Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) is rolling out Verizon Mobile Security, a new application designed to protect Android smartphones from loss, theft and cyber attacks. Optimized for devices running Android 2.1 and higher, Verizon Mobile Security comes in three options. The free Verizon Mobile Security Basic provides antivirus protection powered by digital security provider McAfee--the app also integrates McAfee's SiteAdvisor tool to identify and warn customers of suspicious websites. Verizon Mobile Security Premium, priced at $1.99 a month per line, includes all of the Basic app features while adding McAfee App Alert, which alerts subscribers to apps with the ability to access, store or transmit data to or from the device. The premium option also touts recovery features from Asurion enabling customers to remotely locate, alarm, lock or wipe data from a lost or stolen device. Verizon adds that customers signed up for its Total Equipment Coverage protection plan can add Verizon Mobile Security Premium for $1 per month per line. Total Equipment Coverage protects users in their event their devices and accessories or lost, stolen, damaged or subject to mechanical failure after the manufacturer's warranty expires. Total Equipment Coverage pricing begins at $6.99 per month per device. Subscribers can download Verizon Mobile Security from the Verizon Channel in the Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Play storefront. If consumers select the Verizon Mobile Security Premium option, Verizon Wireless will directly bill the service to their account each month. McAfee previously teamed with Verizon Wireless rival Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) for the similar McAfee Mobile Security and McAfee Family Protection Android Edition apps. The security firm has identified more than 13,000 distinct pieces of mobile malware so far in 2012, up from less than 2,000 in all of 2011. Apple device IDs hack traced to app publisher BlueToad Digital publisher BlueToad revealed it was recently hacked by cyber criminals, resulting in the theft of roughly a million unique Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) device identifiers leaked to the Internet last week. "Although we successfully defend against thousands of cyber attacks each day, this determined criminal attack ultimately resulted in a breach to a portion of our systems," said BlueToad CEO and president Paul DeHart. "When we discovered that we were the likely source of the information in question, we immediately reached out to law enforcement to inform them and to cooperate with their ongoing criminal investigation of the parties responsible for the criminal attack and the posting of the stolen information. We have fixed the vulnerability and are working around the clock to ensure that a security breach doesn't happen again." According to DeHart, BlueToad--which leverages its Page Flip technology to convert PDF content into digital formats including iOS and Android applications--does not collect and has never collected consumer information like credit cards, social security numbers or medical information. "The illegally obtained information primarily consisted of Apple device names and UDID--information that was reported and stored pursuant to commercial industry development practices," he said. "Upon Apple's recommendation several months ago, we modified our code base to discontinue the practice of reporting UDIDs. We have now also discontinued storing any UDID information sent to our servers by apps that have not yet been updated to the new code base." Hacker group AntiSec leaked the Apple UDIDs (alphanumeric strings unique to each Apple device) last week, originally claiming the data was obtained in March 2012 by breaching a Dell notebook owned by a Federal Bureau of Investigation supervisor. The FBI denied the allegations, saying: "At this time there is no evidence indicating that an FBI laptop was compromised or that the FBI either sought or obtained this data." Apple also denied releasing the UDID list to the FBI or any other source. An Apple spokesperson told The Wall Street Journal that the company is aware BlueToad is the source of the leak and said that its new iOS 6 mobile operating system overhaul will eliminate the use of UDIDs, citing concerns over how the data is being used to track users and tie their devices to other personal information. "Developers do not have access to users' account information, passwords or credit card information, unless a user specifically elects to provide that information to the developer," Apple said. Google ditching Wallet prepaid card support on Oct. 17 Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) will discontinue its branded prepaid card on Oct. 17, saying it has outlived its usefulness now that the Google Wallet contactless payment application supports all credit and debit cards. When the Near Field Communications-based Google Wallet first launched in May 2011, Google Prepaid Card support enabled consumers to fund their digital account from almost any payment card. Last month, Google rolled out a cloud-based Wallet supporting all credit and debit cards from Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover--after a card is added, Google partner Bancorp Bank issues a Google Wallet Virtual Card linked to the consumer's account. When the user makes an in-store purchase, Google Wallet processes the merchant payment via the virtual card, and then charges the amount of the original purchase to the selected debit or credit card. "Google Wallet itself is not changing--only the Google Prepaid Card will be impacted," reads a Google FAQ on the Prepaid Card program termination. "All your credit and debit cards in your Google Wallet will continue to work normally. The only change you'll notice is the elimination of the Google Prepaid Card from your Google Wallet on October 17, 2012." Google goes on to encourage users with Google Prepaid Card fund balances to spend that money before the shutoff date. Consumers who are unable to empty their balance by Oct. 17 can request a refund from Google Prepaid Card servicer Money Network. Google said it will post full refund details on the FAQ site next month. Google adds that it will not restore the prepaid card to Wallet in the event the app is reset between now and Oct. 17. Consumers can recover any remaining funds by contacting Money Network. Google Wallet enables consumers to make purchases by tapping their Android smartphone at more than 200,000 MasterCard PayPass-enabled merchant terminals across the U.S. Google Wallet also includes support for SingleTap, which allows users to redeem coupons and/or earn rewards points, as well as Featured Offers, which spotlights exclusive discounts from select retailers. Although Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) offers a handful of NFC-enabled Android smartphones supporting Google Wallet, Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ), AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) and T-Mobile USA have shunned the service as they focus on building out their own nationwide m-commerce network, Isis, which is slated to begin consumer trials this month. Reports also indicate Sprint is planning its own rival contactless payment initiative, casting doubt on how Google Wallet fits into its plans moving forward. Why comedians and developers are collaborating on app ideas At most hackathons, the worst thing that could happen to a developer is having the crowd burst out laughing at the product ideas they present. At an event in New York City last week, however, cracking up other developers and judges was an essential ingredient to winning the top prize. Comedy Hack Day, held Sept. 8 and 9 at Pivotal Labs on Broadway, might have been the first time mobile app developers were given an opportunity to compete on teams that included professional comedians in the quest to develop an innovative software idea. At press time, around 100 people had registered for the event, about three-quarters of whom came from the developer side. Comedy Hack Day also attracted a few high-profile judges from both fields, including serial tech entrepreneur/blogger Anil Dash and Daily Show co-creator Lizz Winstead. Although the participants were not restricted to creating apps, many of the ideas that were offered in the lead-up to the event focused on creative use cases involving mobile users.
