1. Cablevision pitching managed WiFi service to business customers

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Cablevision's  (NYSE: CVC) Optimum Lightpath division said it is beginning to pitch commercial customers a managed WiFi service in which it will set up in-building wireless networks that can be accessed by employees and guests.

Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO) is supplying WiFi gear for the managed WiFi service, and Optimum Lightpath said Wednesday that it is teaming up with IT provider Presidio to offer the product. The service includes WiFi access points, switches and controllers, and will allow businesses to create multiple names (SSIDs) for their WiFi networks. Optimum Lightpath and Presidio said they'll handle management and maintenance for the networks, and let customers access a portal that can be used to administer the WiFi networks.

Building WiFi networks has also been a key area of focus for Cablevision's consumer business. The MSO has constructed thousands of WiFi hotspots in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut that its cable modem customers can access for free.

2. John Malone cuts ribbon at The Cable Center theater

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Cable pioneer John Malone appeared Friday at a ribbon cutting ceremony at The Cable Center, where the theater at its Denver headquarters was named the John Malone Theater.

Malone, who is chairman of cable programming company Liberty Media Corp. (Nasdaq: LMCA) and international cable MSO Liberty Global (Nasdaq: LBTYA), is the former CEO of Tele-Communications Inc. (TCI). In 1999, Malone sold TCI, which was then the nation's largest cable MSO to AT&T, and the telco later sold its cable systems to Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA).

The Cable Center said last month that it had received a $1 million personal donation to name the theater after Malone from Liberty Global CEO Mike Fries, Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei and Discovery Communications CEO David Zaslav. Those executives attended the ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, where Malone, 71, addressed the audience.

3. CBS may collect $1B in retransmission fees by 2016

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

CBS Corp. (NYSE: CBS) expects that it will be able to generate $1 billion in retransmission-consent fees by 2016, Sanford C. Bernstein analyst Todd Juenger said in a research note.

The Eye Network will be able to hit the $1 billion mark by collecting $1.22 monthly per subscriber from cable and satellite TV providers that carry its owned-and-operated stations in their basic cable lineups, Juenger said. CBS affiliates will also contribute 50 percent of the retransmission-consent fees that they collect from local cable operators and satellite providers, Juenger noted.

CBS executives have said previously that they expected to be able to reach the $1 billion mark in retransmission-consent fees by 2017. CBS recently announced new retransmission deals with AT&T's (NYSE: T) U-verse TV and Cablevision (NYSE: CVC).

4. Costantini helping Glenn Beck blaze cable and satellite carriage

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) and Scripps Networks veteran Lynne Costantini is negotiating cable and satellite carriage deals for conservative talk show host Glenn Beck, whose new network TheBlaze launched Wednesday in Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH) homes.

Beck anchored primetime shows for Fox News Channel and CNN Headline News before launching TheBlaze as an online video network last summer, charging web surfers $9.95 monthly or $99.95 annually to access its programs. The network also features news and opinion shows anchored by Will Cain, S.E. Cupp, Lu Hanessian and other hosts. Former Fox News and CNN executive Joel Cheatwood is the network's president.

Dish said Wednesday that it is carrying TheBlaze in its America's Top 250 package, and also offering subscribers the option of paying $5 monthly to access the network on an a la carte basis.

TheBlaze said that Costantini, who had been EVP of affiliate sales at Scripps Networks Interactive and SVP of programming at Time Warner Cable before launching consulting firm Costantini Media Advisors, will lead its distribution strategy as a consultant.

TheBlaze may be a good fit for Dish, which has been positioning itself as a family friendly pay TV company. Dish launched a $5 monthly Heartland programming package in February that includes Hallmark Channel, GMC TV, Pixl, RFD-TV and Rural TV.

5. LodgeNet names Gemstar and Fox Cable veteran Rich Battista CEO

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Struggling hotel entertainment distributor LodgeNet (Nasdaq: LNET) said Wedneday that it hired former Gemstar-TV Guide and Fox Cable Networks executive Rich Battista as its new CEO.

Richard Battista, LodgeNet

In May, LodgeNet replaced longtime CEO Scott Petersen with Windjammer Cable chief Philip Spencer, who was named interim CEO. The company has seen the revenue it generates from selling hotel guests pay-per-view movies and porn titles decline, and its stock has dropped by about 90 percent since April. LodgeNet faces increased competition from Internet video that hotel guests can access via WiFi connections, and DirecTV (Nasdaq: DTV) is also challenging it by striking distribution deals with hotel chains.

Battista was CEO of Gemstar-TV Guide International from 2004 to 2008, and negotiated the sale of the interactive program guide developer to Macrovision, which has renamed the company Rovi (Nasdaq: ROVI). He then joined News Corp. (Nasdaq: NWSA), where he was named EVP and president of Fox Cable Networks. Battista left Fox in 2010 to launch Pontiac Digital Media and pop culture and entertainment website Snakkle.com.
