Why comedians and developers are collaborating on app ideas At most hackathons, the worst thing that could happen to a developer is having the crowd burst out laughing at the product ideas they present. At an event in New York City last week, however, cracking up other developers and judges was an essential ingredient to winning the top prize. Comedy Hack Day might have been the first time mobile app developers were given an opportunity to compete on teams that included professional comedians in the quest to develop an innovative software idea. Although the participants were not restricted to creating apps, many of the ideas that were offered in the lead-up to the event focused on creative use cases involving mobile users. Facebook's Zuckerberg says HTML5 app was a mistake Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company is working on a native social networking application for Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android to match its newly revamped app for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS, admitting the company's previous reliance on HTML5-based mobile experiences was a serious tactical error. | | Zuckerberg | Speaking at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference, Zuckerberg indicated the native Android app is coming "soon"--pressed for a timetable, he said "It will be ready when it's ready." Zuckerberg added the Android app will leverage much of the same infrastructure developed for Facebook's native iOS app, introduced last month. Facebook for iOS 5.0 touts speeds up to twice as fast as the previous HTML5 edition, as well as faster scrolling and instant access to notifications. "We've had a bunch of missteps on [mobile]," Zuckerberg admitted. "The biggest mistake we made as a company was betting too much on HTML5 instead of native... We burnt two years." After Facebook reported net losses of $157 million in the quarter ending June 30, its first as a public company, executives vowed to right the ship with the introduction of new and improved mobile social networking experiences. "A lot more people have phones than computers," Zuckerberg said Tuesday. "And mobile users are more likely to be daily active users." He added that mobile users are more than twice as likely to use Facebook more than six or seven times per week, with the number of stories consumed by iOS device users doubling in the weeks since Facebook for iOS 5.0 reached the App Store. Zuckerberg also reiterated that the much-rumored Facebook smartphone is nothing more than a rumor, stating such a product "doesn't move the needle for us" and "wouldn't make sense." Facebook will instead continue pursuing a strategy of mobile ubiquity: "We want to build a system which is as deeply as possible integrated into every major device people want to use," Zuckerberg said. Google: Android device activations surpass 500M worldwide Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) has activated more than 500 million Android devices worldwide less than four years since launching the mobile operating system. Android Director of Product Management Hugo Barra confirmed the milestone Tuesday evening via Google+, stating that Google is now activating 1.3 million additional Android devices each day. Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt first noted the daily activation total last week. In mid-June, the company trumpeted 900,000 Android activations each day, up from the 850,000 daily activations Vice President of Mobile Andy Rubin announced in late February. Shipments of Android smartphones surpassed the 100 million quarterly mark for the first time in the second quarter of 2012, translating to global market share of 68.1 percent, according to recent Canalys data. Android device shipments more than doubled year-over-year, increasing to 107.8 million from 51.2 million in the second quarter of 2011, when the platform controlled 47.6 percent of the international market. Canalys cites China as a major catalyst behind Android's growth spurt, noting the OS now powers 81 percent of smartphones shipped nationwide. Annual Android smartphone shipments will increase to 451 million worldwide in 2013, up from 357 million this year, according to a new IHS forecast. The firm adds Android smartphone shipments are on pace to reach a cumulative 1 billion next year, topping the 3 billion mark in 2016. > | | IHS: Worldwide annual unit shipments of Android phones will rise to 451 million in 2013, up from 357 million in 2012. | "We expect the Android operating system to become the first to reach the milestone of 1 billion shipments during its lifetime," said IHS Analyst Daniel Gleeson. "For Google, this accomplishment highlights the success of its growth strategy for Android, which is based on providing the operating system as an open-source platform to third-party smartphone brands free of charge. Google hopes to make significant revenues from mobile advertisements and other services. Such an open-source model means that Google offers handset makers the ability to customize Android easily, and by also eliminating licensing fees, is greatly encouraging adoption among smartphone handset manufacturers." Nokia vows updated UI, new apps for legacy Lumia smartphones A week after unveiling the Lumia 920 and 820, its first smartphones running Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) new Windows Phone 8 operating system, Nokia (NYSE:NOK) vowed to continue releasing new software and features for existing Windows Phone 7.5-based Lumia devices. "Existing Lumia owners also have plenty to look forward to and are definitely not being left behind," Nokia representative Boc Ly writes on the Nokia Conversations blog. "The current Lumia range of smartphones will continue to be supported by Nokia with a new updated user interface, new features, apps and upgrades." In addition to newly released Windows Phone 7.5 applications including the location-based Nokia City Lens augmented reality app and data usage monitoring tool Nokia Counters, the device maker said it is currently working to bring its fledgling Cinemagraph GIF maker to legacy Lumia phones, along with an updated version of its Smart Group Shot imaging app. Additional features for all Lumia devices include a revamped start screen, a ringtone maker app, Bluetooth-enabled contact sharing and Bluetooth media file transfer. "The rollout of these updates for the Lumia 610, Lumia 710, Lumia 800 and Lumia 900 smartphones will be phased, and we will share more details closer to the start of delivery," Ly said. Also in the pipeline: Windows Phone-optimized versions of Zynga games Draw Something and Words with Friends, as well as new apps from Groupon, Bloomberg and WhatsApp. Last week, AOL launched Entrance, a new mobile entertainment hub built for Lumia smartphones. AOL is not the only content partner recruited by Nokia to boost the Lumia user experience: Bloomberg reported the manufacturer is teaming with entertainment giants including The Walt Disney Company and DreamWorks Animation to bring popular iOS and Android apps like Where's My Water? and Where's My Perry? to the Windows Phone platform. Nokia is also expanding its free Nokia Music streaming service to the U.S. market, promising Lumia smartphone owners access to more than 150 exclusive playlists presented without commercial interruption. Report: Microsoft struggling to keep Windows Phone 8 release on schedule Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) reportedly is working overtime to keep its new Windows Phone 8 overhaul on schedule, collaborating closely with carriers to guarantee that devices running the new mobile operating system reach stores in advance of the holiday shopping season. | | Microsoft unveiled Windows 8 (pictured) in June. | Citing multiple sources, The Verge reports that Microsoft originally planned to roll out Windows Phone 8 in early October, but software bugs and testing delays have forced the company to postpone the official launch until Oct. 29, with devices running the OS expected to reach retailers in November. Insiders said HTC has endured a particularly difficult testing cycle, facing a series of issues that have prevented the company from announcing Windows Phone 8 devices as early as rival manufacturers Nokia (NYSE:NOK) and Samsung Electronics. The Verge adds that Microsoft is working with operators to minimize device testing times to keep Windows Phone 8 products on track, noting that in some cases, carriers may ship smartphones without any of their usual customizations. Any hiccups in the carrier testing process will impact product availability dates. Microsoft is expected to deliver a final Windows Phone 8 to manufacturers as early as this week, but has instructed Nokia, Samsung and HTC to keep the OS under wraps. Samsung was the first partner to officially announce a Windows Phone 8 smartphone, unveiling the Ativ S late last month but not demonstrating the new OS on the device. In an internal memo obtained by The Verge, Nokia's Executive Vice President of Smart Devices Jo Harlow called the Atis S "a nice warm-up act for us" ahead of the company's Lumia 920 and Lumia 820, announced last week, noting the Samsung device was "shown with static WP screens as the new OS is not yet available." Nokia prevented media members attending last week's Lumia launch event from test-driving the new smartphones and is also sending out dummy devices to the U.K. press. The Verge notes Microsoft requested that Nokia keep Windows Phone 8 on lockdown, citing concerns over unannounced features as well as some stable OS components. Microsoft first previewed Windows Phone 8 during its Windows Phone Summit event in June. The revamped platform touts multi-core chipsets to bolster smartphone performance and optimize battery life, a choice of three screen resolutions, integration of VoIP and video chat, a customizable start screen and Wallet Hub, which combines support for Near Field Communications-enabled m-commerce services including contactless payments, deals and loyalty cards, in addition to in-app purchase mechanisms. Microsoft also will integrate remote access features from its forthcoming Office 13 productivity suite.
