iPhone 5: Wireless carrier winners and losers

By Mike Dano Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Mike Dano

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) took the wraps off its new iPhone 5, and in doing so offered precious few surprises.

AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T), Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) and Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) will sell the taller, LTE-capable gadget, and T-Mobile will not.

If analyst forecasts are to be believed, the iPhone 5 will sell in enormous volumes in the weeks after its release Sept. 21. Some expect Apple to sell as many as 10 million iPhone 5s in the first few days after the device goes on sale, which would make it the world's biggest phone launch.

Thus, it's worth evaluating exactly how the iPhone will affect each of the nation's major and minor carriers.

T-Mobile USA is the most obvious loser in Apple's iPhone 5 launch. The carrier was conspicuously absent from Apple's iPhone 5 launch plans--a situation that T-Mobile has clearly been planning for.

In the past few months, T-Mobile has announced it will provide HSPA speeds to unlocked iPhones by year-end via a costly spectrum-refarming program; that its new unlimited smartphone data plan will be available to unlocked iPhones; and that it is embarking on a training program aimed at helping retail employees sell T-Mobile services to owners of unlocked iPhones.

As a result, T-Mobile can offer iPhone owners service plans that it says are up to $50 per month cheaper than what AT&T Mobility offers, with similar network speeds.

The caveat, though, is that users will have to either pay hundreds of dollars to cancel their AT&T contracts or pay even more to purchase an unlocked, unsubsidized iPhone. Further, T-Mobile does not offer LTE...Continued

1. Verizon, AT&T and Sprint each get LTE iPhone 5

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

iPhone 5

Click here for complete coverage of the iPhone 5.

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) introduced the iPhone 5, as expected, at a media event in San Francisco. The device, details of which had been widely leaked in the months leading up to the event, will support LTE, have a taller screen and will run on Apple's updated iOS 6 software.

Apple added LTE connectivity to its iconic iPhone for the first time. The device will sell in two different versions in the United States: One that will support the 700 MHz C Block LTE network of Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) and the 1900 MHz LTE network of Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S), and a separate version that will support the 700 MHz B Block and AWS LTE network of AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T). Apple will also sell a version that supports international LTE networks.

A week after the nation's three Tier 1 carriers launch the device on Sept. 21, a number of smaller carriers will also begin selling the iPhone 5. Leap Wireless' (NASDAQ:LEAP) Cricket, C Spire Wireless and Cellcom have announced they will sell the iPhone 5 starting Sept. 28. Other current iPhone carriers, such as Appalachian Wireless, GCI of Alaska and nTelos Wireless, likely will join the ranks of these smaller iPhone 5 carriers.

The iPhone 5 will sell for $199 for the 16 GB model, $299 for the 32 GB model and $399 for the 64 GB model, all with a two-year contract. The 16 GB iPhone 4S, introduced in October 2011, will drop to $99 with a two-year contract, in keeping with past Apple practice to lower the price of older models. The 8 GB iPhone 4, introduced in 2010, will be free on contract.

Pre-orders for the iPhone 5 will start Sept. 14 with the gadget going on sale Sept. 21 in the United States, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore. That will give Apple a full week to record iPhone sales for the third quarter. Apple said more countries will follow the week after and that by December 2010 the iPhone 5 will be available in 100 countries for 240 carriers.

The iPhone 5 has a 4-inch Retina display, up from 3.5 inches on the previous models, as well as a 1136 x 640 screen resolution. The larger screen real estate allows Apple to add in a fifth row of application icons to the screen. As expected, Apple will use in-cell LCD technology, making the display thinner by integrating touch sensors into the LCD. The phone is made entirely of glass and aluminum.

The iPhone will sport an Apple-designed A6 application processor, which Apple said is twice as fast as the dual-core A5 chip inside the iPhone 4S. Forward Concepts analyst Will Strauss speculated that the A6 is a quad-core 28nm implementation of ARM Holdings' Coretex-A9 processor  The gadget has a "dynamic antenna" and supports not only LTE but also CDMA-1xEV-DO, HSPA+, HSPA, dual-carrier HSDPA, EDGE and GPRS, as well as 802.11n Wi-Fi at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Strauss said it unlikely that any company but Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) "could have provided the single-chip baseband modem and single-chip multi-band RF transceiver."

Verizon's LTE network currently covers 75 percent of the U.S. population, around 235 million POPs, and the carrier plans to hit 260 million POPs by year-end. AT&T's LTE network covers more than 75 million POPs, and the carrier plans to expand that to 150 million POPs by year-end. Sprint Nextel just turned on its LTE network in July in a handful of markets, but the carrier plans to cover 123 million POPs by the end of the year. Sprint announced earlier this week it will be bringing LTE to 100 new markets in the "coming months" including Boston; Chicago; Indianapolis; Los Angeles; Miami; Nashville, Tenn.; New Orleans; New York; Philadelphia; and Washington, D.C.

Sprint has already touted that its LTE iPhone will be the only one in the United States paired with an unlimited data plan. Verizon confirmed it will add the FaceTime video calling feature over cellular, which is enabled via Apple's iOS 6 software, at no extra charge. AT&T is offering that feature as well but only to customers on its new Mobile Share plans, which sparked a backlash against the carrier from public interest and consumer groups.

In terms of network coverage, Verizon's extensive LTE network, covering 75 percent of the U.S. population, could give it a leg up on its U.S. competitors. Verizon's network was also named the fastest in a recent report from wireless testing company RootMetrics. Forrester Research analyst said Verizon's LTE superiority will give it a "clear advantage" over its competitors. Despite unlimited data Sprint also doesn't have as much spectrum to devote to LTE as Verizon does: Sprint's LTE network works in a 5x5 MHz configuration and Verizon's LTE network works in a 10x10 MHz configuration. Typically more spectrum delivers faster speeds. AT&T noted that its HSPA+ network is faster than Verizon's CDMA EV-DO network outside of LTE areas.

In Canada, Rogers, Telus and Bell Mobility will offer the iPhone 5. In Europe, Everything Everywhere will launch the LTE iPhone in the U.K., meaning it will also support the 1800 MHz band there. Deustche Telekom was also named as a partner for Germany. In Asia, Apple has announced Japan's SoftBank and KDDI, Korea's SKT and KT, Hong Kong's SmarTone and Singapore's SingTel.

2. Verizon's Shammo: Our LTE network will give us advantage in iPhone 5 sales

By Sue Marek Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) executives believe that the company's large LTE network footprint will give it a competitive advantage when it comes to selling Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 5, which supports LTE.

Apple debuted the device Wednesday and said it will be available in the U.S. through Verizon, AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) and Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S). Speaking at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Media, Communications and Entertainment Conference, Verizon Communications EVP and CFO Fran Shammo said that the company believes that because it has "double the LTE coverage of all its competitors combined" it will have an advantage. "We are in a good spot. Apple is a good partner, and I think we will do extremely well with the phone," Shammo said.

Meanwhile, Sprint Nextel just turned on its LTE network in July in a handful of markets, but the carrier hopes to cover 123 million POPs by year-end.

Shammo added that the company expects to see strong demand for the iPhone 5 in third quarter but noted that the third quarter is a short selling period. Apple said pre-orders for the iPhone 5 will start Sept. 14 with the gadget going on sale Sept. 21 in the United States. However, he does expect the company to have a very strong fourth quarter based upon sales of the iPhone 5 and other devices that are in the works.

Shammo also reported that the company's Share Everything shared data plan, which debuted in June, is doing better than the company expected. "The migration off of the unlimited 3G plans to the Share Everything plan on 4G is more than expected at this point in time," Shammo said. "So far the plan has exceeded expectations."  He added that more customers have also been attaching more devices to the shared data plans than the company predicted. Those devices include MiFi hot spots and tablets.

Shammo's comments are notable considering a recent Parks Associates research report found that many consumers are confused about shared data plans' fees and still prefer unlimited data.  Verizon and AT&T "run the risk of substantially increasing their churn rate at the same time that Sprint and T-Mobile are marketing their unlimited data plans, which are still the most popular data plans on market," said Jennifer Kent, Parks research analyst with Parks Associates.

Shammo also said that the company will be looking at new metrics to use because the shared data plans make it difficult to attach revenue per every user. Instead, he said that Verizon is looking at metrics such as average revenue per account.

Interestingly Shammo also confirmed that the company will launch VoLTE in 2013 rather than late 2012, which Verizon executives have been saying for some time now. However, he did not provide further details. In May, Tony Melone, CTO of Verizon Communications said that the company would enable VoLTE in 2012 but would not rush the service.

3. Sprint: Consumers will want unlimited data with iPhone 5

By Sue Marek Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) will use its unlimited data plan to gain a competitive edge in the race to attract customers with (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 5, which supports LTE.

Apple debuted the device Wednesday and said it will be available in the U.S. through Verizon, AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) and Sprint. Speaking at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Media, Communications and Entertainment Conference, Spritn CFO Joe  Euteneuer said that although Sprint doesn't have as big of an LTE footprint as its competitors, it is the only operator selling the iPhone 5 in the U.S. with an unlimited data plan. "It will come down to the consumer decision," he said.  "Do they want a metered plan with their service or do they want unlimited?"

Sprint just launched its LTE network in July in a handful of markets, but the carrier expects to cover 123 million POPs by year-end. Meanwhile, Verizon's LTE network currently covers 75 percent of the U.S. population, around 235 million POPs, and the carrier plans to hit 260 million POPs by year-end. AT&T's LTE network covers more than 75 million POPs, and the carrier plans to expand that to 150 million POPs by year-end.

Euteneuer added that earlier this week Sprint announced that it has completed deploying LTE in five markets and said that it was preparing 100 more cities for LTE, including Boston; Chicago; Indianapolis; Los Angeles; Miami; Nashville, Tenn.; New Orleans; New York; Philadelphia; and Washington, D.C.  The company believes that by announcing these 100 more markets, customers will see that they can buy an LTE iPhone now with an unlimited data plan and take advantage of the LTE speeds when their market launches later this year. He also said that the company is currently selling other models of LTE phones in non-LTE markets and they are selling very well.  "Consumers are looking for an experience that will be fine," he said. "It will be fine now and get better when you get LTE."

Sprint executives have always maintained that the company is committed to unlimited data but Euteneuer hinted that down the road it may shift to metered pricing or look at other ways to price its services to grow its revenues. "When we finish LTE we can look at where our competitors stand on metered pricing and price our stuff accordingly. Having unlimited data is a premium product so maybe we price it at a premium," he said, adding that there also might be opportunities for bundled services or add-on services such as the mobile wallet.

Interestingly Euteneuer said that the company has not seen any impact from T-Mobile USA's recent announcement that it would be offering unlimited data also.  "They have been advertising unlimited for the past year even though they didn't have unlimited.  We didn't see any impact from that," Euteneuer said.

4. AT&T's Stephens: iPhone 5 won't increase churn

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) does not expect an exodus of customers leaving for other carriers amid the iPhone 5 launch, according to AT&T CFO John Stephens.

Speaking today at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Media, Communications and Entertainment Conference, Stephens was asked whether customers who upgraded to new iPhones and other smartphones in 2010 will leave now that their two-year contracts are over. Stephens noted that many of those customers may have upgraded to new contracts in 2011, before AT&T extended the period customers would need to wait to get an early upgrade.

Stephens said AT&T is operating in a competitive environment but is not vulnerable. "I don't think it's as a simple as saying it's the contract length," he said. "It's also when was the last time they refreshed their phone."

AT&T, like other Tier 1 carriers, will start taking pre-orders for the iPhone 5 Sept. 14 and will start selling the gadget Sept. 21. Stephens declined to predict how many iPhones AT&T will sell, but he did note that the company has a strong iPhone sales history. In the first five days of iPhone 4S availability last year AT&T sold one million 4S units. "That can kind of give you a sense of what it could be," he said. "I just mention that to you as a reference point."

Stephens also noted that AT&T'S HSPA+ and LTE networks cover 275 million POPs, allowing customers to access faster speeds than Verizon Wireless' (NYSE:VZ) EV-DO network.

The AT&T executive also touched on several other issues, including the company's Mobile Share shared data plans. He said that so far the reaction to the company's shared plans, which AT&T started offering Aug. 23 to new and existing customers, has been positive. Customers are not required to switch to the new plans. "The results early on are very good," he said. "We are optimistic or positive about the fact that customers are buying bigger buckets or migrating toward bigger buckets."

Stephens also noted that while AT&T has acquired 700 MHz spectrum from Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) and hopes to acquire 2.3 GHz WCS spectrum from NextWave Wireless and other companies, more needs to be done to continue to get spectrum into the hands of carriers. He said the company is pleased with the progress it is has made in the past year to get more spectrum, and he said that AT&T is now confident about its five-year plan for its spectrum needs.

Additionally, Stephens said it was a good thing that the FCC plans to review its rules related to its spectrum screen, which helps determine how much spectrum a carrier can hold. "Certainly getting the rules out in the open with a clear understanding is important," he said.

5. Huawei, ZTE face Congress in national security probe

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Executives from Chinese vendors will testify before a House intelligence committee to rebut suggestions from Congress that they pose a national security risk to the United States.

On Thursday the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence will hold a rare public hearing titled, "Investigation of the Security Threat Posed by Chinese Telecommunications Companies Huawei and ZTE." The committee began probing the two companies in November 2011 and is expected to produce a report in early October on its investigation into whether infrastructure from the two companies poses a threat to U.S. networks, among other questions.

The two companies have repeatedly denied links to the Chinese military or receiving illegal help from the Chinese government. Both have had minimal success securing network infrastructure contracts from Tier 1 carriers in the U.S. market. However, both companies' device businesses have found favor with U.S. carriers.

Charles Ding, a corporate senior vice president, will testify for Huawei, and Zhu Jinyun, senior vice president for North America and Europe, will testify for ZTE. "We respect the U.S. government's security concerns," ZTE's Zhu said ahead of the hearing. "We need to work together to find a solution for those concerns, and this should be our start."

Huawei issued a report last week in which it pledged never to cooperate with any agency conducting espionage. Huawei also noted that its equipment is used by 45 of the world's 50 biggest phone companies.

Huawei also published a report called "the Case for Huawei in America," which pushes back against "allegations based on allegations" made against the company.

"Much of the evidence fueling lawmakers' concerns remains classified," said the 69-page report by Dan Steinbock, described as an authority on trade and investment and U.S.-Chinese relations. "However, when one set of allegations are substantiated with another set of allegations, the line between investigation and maltreatment grows thin." Huawei spokesman Bill Plummer told the Reuters the words in the paper belonged to Steinbock, not the company.

SPOTLIGHT ON... T-Mobile: Broadcast spectrum isn't enough

T-Mobile USA plans to tell a House subcommittee that the FCC's planned auction of broadcast TV spectrum won't free up enough radio waves to meet wireless carriers' demands. According to a report in Broadcasting & Cable, T-Mobile's Steve Sharkey will testify that the government should free up more spectrum for mobile broadband, and that the spectrum should be licensed to commercial entities exclusively and not shared between commercial carriers and government users. Separately, in a letter to key lawmakers, CTIA, 4G Americas and other groups urged Congress to support the FCC's plan to free up 500 MHz of spectrum within 10 years for wireless uses. The letter urges lawmakers to provide "near-term access to additional licensed spectrum allocations below 3 GHz." Letter (PDF)
