Another year, another new iPhone… and still no support for Near Field Communications. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) finally took the wraps off its long-awaited iPhone 5 on Wednesday, and for all the bells and whistles the computing giant managed to squeeze into the supermodel-thin smartphone, NFC and mobile payments capabilities were conspicuously absent. Rival mobile operating systems including Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android and Research In Motion's (NASDAQ:RIMM) BlackBerry already support NFC, of course. Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) forthcoming Windows Phone 8 will introduce NFC capabilities as well. But the iPhone--the device by which all others are judged--continues to shun the technology like the plague. We've seen this movie before, of course. Apple was widely expected to roll out NFC support with the previous iPhone 4S, introduced in 2011, but that speculation failed to pan out. This summer, The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple executives and engineers did indeed debate the company's entrance into the mobile payments space last year, mulling whether to create a new service that would embed various payment methods into iOS devices or instead build a payment network of its own. Scott Forstall, Apple's head of iPhone software, even assigned members of his team to work on a comprehensive wallet application, while hardware staffers investigated contactless technologies including NFC and Bluetooth. But lingering questions over security, payment processing and retailer adoption scuttled the project. During an executive review, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer even asked if there is a newer, web-based technology more secure than NFC. That didn't stop the NFC speculation from returning with a vengeance this summer after Apple announced Passbook, a new iOS 6 app that stores and updates boarding passes, retailer loyalty cards, movie ticket apps and related consumer information and documents. It seemed a forgone conclusion that Passbook would grow to add complementary mobile payments as well, and during Apple's most recent earnings call, CEO Tim Cook further fanned the flames by stating Passbook is a "very key feature" in iOS, but declined to elaborate. The rumors reached a crescendo late last month when photos allegedly depicting the front assembly of the iPhone 5 surfaced online: While consistent with previous images, the photos also included what appeared to be an NFC chip located adjacent to the smartphone's front-facing camera. Hell, SCVNGR, the startup behind the LevelUp payment app, even introduced new NFC-enabled hardware in anticipation of the iPhone 5 adding NFC support. So what happened? The smart money says those aforementioned security, processing and adoption concerns still linger. Isis, the NFC-based nationwide mobile payments network spearheaded by Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ), AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) and T-Mobile USA, still hasn't gotten off the ground, while rival Google Wallet is supported on only a handful of Android smartphones offered by Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S). Standardization and interoperability remain huge question marks as well: Just last month, Google, PayPal, the Isis triumvirate and Sprint joined forces as the Mobile Payments Committee, an effort to tackle those challenges as well as regulation and public policy, and merchant and consumer education. There are no guarantees NFC will even win as the mobile payment technology of choice, for that matter. Square users are processing more than $6 billion in payments on an annualized basis by sliding credit and debit cards through a dongle that attaches into a smartphone's audio jack--dongles that Apple stores sell, it's worth pointing out. PayPal offers proprietary mobile wallet services at national chains including Home Depot, Abercrombie & Fitch and Jos. A. Bank, not to mention a Square-like product of its own dubbed PayPal Here. And more than a dozen leading U.S. merchants including Walmart, Target and Best Buy will create their own nationwide m-commerce network, further muddying the waters. That leaves Apple on the NFC sidelines. It's beginning to look like the company will stay there indefinitely. Because if Apple didn't embrace NFC now, then when? Apple famously refused to support Adobe Flash on iOS too, and look how that turned out: 400 million iOS devices sold to date, and Flash on life support. Apple will continue doing just fine without NFC support. But NFC without Apple's support is a far more problematic proposition. P.S. Apple offers iOS 6 to developers ahead of iPhone 5 launch Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) released the final Golden Master build of its new iOS 6 operating system overhaul to registered developers hours after confirming the launch of its new iPhone 5. Apple will roll out iOS 6 to iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, new iPad, iPad 2 and fourth-generation iPod touch devices on Sept. 19. iOS 6 also will arrive preloaded on the iPhone 5, which hits U.S. retailers Sept. 21. "To prepare your apps for submission, download the [Golden Master] seeds for iOS 6 and Xcode 4.5 and test your existing apps for compatibility," reads an announcement posted to the iOS Dev Center site, adding "Be sure to review the updated App Store Review Guidelines and the iOS 6 Readiness Checklist and submit your apps today." To download the GM seeds, click here. Apple first announced iOS 6 at its annual Worldwide Developer Conference in June, promising deep integration with Facebook and introducing a new Maps platform to replace Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Maps data. iOS 6 also brings Passbook, a new app that stores and updates boarding passes, retailer loyalty cards, movie ticket apps and related consumer information and documents, as well as new photo-stream sharing tools, simplified message flagging and overhauled Siri voice-activated software. The iPhone 5 features a 4-inch screen replacing the 3.5-inch screen found across previous iterations of the smartphones. Apple has redesigned core iOS apps to take advantage of the larger display and said developers can also tweak their software to maximize the expanded real estate. The company is already working with a handful of developers to test apps designed for the iPhone 5 screen, including Open Table and CNN. Apple added that apps that have not been tweaked for the larger screen will be displayed in their original format optimized for the 3.5-inch screen and will be surrounded by a black border. Apple also touted dramatic increases in app performance and speed with the iPhone 5's new A6 chip. "Compared to the A5 [chip], it's 2x faster," Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller said, adding "It's a huge jump in performance, but 22 percent smaller." Schiller noted highlights like a 2x increase in computing speeds as well as a 2x increase in graphics processing: "You're going to see this in many things you do," he told iOS developers. "2x performance across the board." Electronic Arts Executive Producer Rob Murray joined Schiller onstage to demonstrate the A6 chip's impact on the publisher's Real Racing 3. "Look at the graphics here," Murray enthused. "Full console quality." Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company's App Store now touts more than 700,000 iOS applications in all, including more than 250,000 optimized for the iPad tablet. Cook added that 90 percent of all iOS apps are downloaded at least once every month. "There's something [in the App Store] for everyone," Cook said. "And believe it or not, every app has its fans." He added that the average iOS device owner uses more than 100 apps in all: "It's a revolution. It's phenomenal." Apple releasing iOS 6 to consumers on Sept. 19 Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) will roll out its new iOS 6 operating system overhaul to iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, new iPad, iPad 2 and fourth-generation iPod touch devices on Sept. 19. iOS 6 also will arrive preloaded on the computing giant's new iPhone 5, announced Sept. 12. Apple first announced iOS 6 at its annual Worldwide Developer Conference in June, promising deep integration with Facebook and introducing a new Maps platform to replace Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Maps data. Scott Forstall, the company's head of iPhone software, spent much of his segment at Apple's media event in San Francisco yesterday focusing on what sets Apple's mapping services apart from the competition. "We've built a search engine in to find [points of interest]--we have over 100 million points of interest," Forstall said, according to The Verge. "And we've built in turn-by-turn directions. As we take you around turns, we use a cinematic camera angle to fly you around." Forstall added that turn-by-turn services are optimized for both landscape and portrait mode. iOS 6 also brings additions to Apple's Safari browser, highlighted by fullscreen mode and the new iCloud Tabs, which synchronizes web activities between the desktop and mobile platforms. "I can get back to any of my content from any of my browsers on the go," Forstall said. Forstall also demonstrated Passbook, a new app that stores and updates boarding passes, retailer loyalty cards, movie ticket apps and related consumer information and documents. Forstall showed off a Passbook stuffed with a virtual movie ticket, airline boarding pass and Starbucks prepaid card. "Here's [a ticket for an event] I've gone to--so I tap the trash button... and we'll shred that for you," he said, initiating a shredding animation. Tickets and passes included in Passbook also will work from the iOS device lockscreen, Forstall added. Microsoft revamps app search with rebranded Windows Phone Store Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is phasing out the Windows Phone Marketplace brand in favor of Windows Phone Store in advance of its forthcoming Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system update. "By doing so, we're following the lead of Windows 8 and its Windows Store for apps and games," explains Microsoft Director of Program Management Mazhar Mohammed. "The two even share the same Store icon." According to Mohammed, the Windows Phone Store revamp features enhanced app search and discovery tools powered by Microsoft's Bing search engine. The overhauled Search box makes it easier to find apps according to function: Users can now type in "guitar" and see relevant apps even if they don't include the word "guitar" in their title. Windows Phone Store also suggests apps in the same genre--for example, recommending diet and exercise apps based on the query "health"--and identifies desired apps even if the original query includes a spelling mistake. "Another cool thing about relying on Bing['s] search algorithm is that it's designed to learn from all the searches people do and will actually get smarter over time, returning more relevant search results," Mohammed adds. Windows Phone Store also touts new browsing options like Top Free and Top Paid, a renamed New+Rising spotlighting emerging hits, and Best Rated, which ranks apps according to customer ratings and usage patterns. The storefront also brings a cleaner site design and new menu options such as a News feature collecting reports and reviews on Windows Phone devices and apps. Mohammed adds that Windows Phone Store will be more family-friendly than its predecessor. "In recent months a number of you have told us that while you appreciate variety, you'd prefer apps with overtly sexual content to be a little less prominent on our virtual shelves," he writes. "We're also committed to stocking a range of apps and ensuring [Windows Phone] Store appeals to as many phone buyers as possible. To strike a balance, we've decided to make racier apps a little less visible. We'll continue to carry apps in this genre that meet our certification criteria and display them in search results. They'll just be less front and center to casual browsers, a group that can include younger family members." Windows Phone Store also introduces a new reporting mechanism for apps with technical issues and questionable content. The Verge first reported on the Windows Phone Store rebranding effort last month. References to the renamed storefront first surfaced in documentation related to Microsoft's new Windows Phone Dev Center online resource. Microsoft's Windows Phone 8, expected this fall, touts multi-core chipsets to bolster smartphone performance and optimize battery life, a choice of three screen resolutions, integration of VoIP and video chat, a customizable start screen and Wallet Hub, which combines support for Near Field Communications-enabled m-commerce services including contactless payments, deals and loyalty cards, in addition to in-app purchase mechanisms. Microsoft has said that apps optimized for Windows Phone 8 will not be backwards compatible with previous Windows Phone editions. Google strengthens browser security with updated Chrome for Android Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) is updating its Chrome for Android browser to improve security and stability. The new Chrome for Android M18.1, available for download via the Google Play storefront, bolsters the application's 'sandbox' security layer, which helps contain malicious mobile websites and prevents them from impacting the entire browser. "This is made possible by the innovative multi-process architecture in Chrome for Android, in conjunction with Android's User ID isolation technology," explains Google software engineer Jay Civelli, adding that the improved sandboxing capabilities will be automatically used for devices running Android 4.1, a.k.a. Jelly Bean. Chrome for Android also integrates location preferences into the system-level Google apps location setting as well as support for YouTube video controls in full-screen mode. The update additionally fixes a number of bugs. Google introduced Chrome for Android Beta in February. Available exclusively for tablets and handsets running Android 4.0 and up, the browser touts many of the same features as its desktop counterpart, and enables users to port bookmarks and saved tabs from the desktop to the mobile platform. Chrome for Android also supports remote debugging via Chrome Developer Tools, allowing developers to debug profile Web pages and Web apps via mobile. Zynga launches mobile role-playing games as executive losses mount Zynga (NASDAQ:ZNGA) is expanding its first-ever mobile role-playing games Montopia and Ayakashi: Ghost Guild to the Western market. The two free-to-play titles were initially introduced exclusively to Japanese consumers in early 2012. Montopia, available for download now from Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) App Store and Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Play, challenges gamers to collect fire, wood and water monsters as they journey across a kingdom in ruins. Players must collect all the monsters in order to complete their Monstapedia, fusing monsters together to win battles against other players. | | Montopia is available for download now from Apple's App Store and Google Play. | Ayakashi: Ghost Guild, coming to iOS and Android in the coming weeks, casts gamers as 'exorcists' tasked with battling ghosts and transforming them into demons. In related news, Zynga has suffered yet another executive defection: Jeff Karp has resigned as chief marketing and revenue officer, Bloomberg reports. Karp's exit was confirmed in a regulatory filing earlier this week. "Jeff Karp is leaving Zynga, and the groups in his organization have been realigned under appropriate existing divisions," a Zynga spokesperson confirmed. Karp is just the latest in a series of high-profile executives to leave Zynga in recent weeks. Chief Operating Officer John Schappert exited in August, just days after he was stripped of his responsibilities as head of social gaming development, and Chief Creative Officer Mike Verdu soon followed to launch his own startup. Bill Leinwand, the CTO of infrastructure cited as a catalyst behind Zynga's shift away from Amazon's cloud services to its internal Z Cloud platform, has taken a similar role at enterprise IT firm ServiceNow. MarketWatch reports that Vice President of Studios Bill Mooney, who spearheaded the FarmVille franchise, and Vice President of Marketing Brian Birtwistle have also left the company, although Zynga has not confirmed their departures. Zynga stock has declined 72 percent since the company went public in late 2011. The social gaming firm reported second quarter 2012 losses of $22.8 million, which executives blamed on recent algorithmic changes made by social network Facebook, as well as diminishing mobile traffic for high-profile acquisition Draw Something. Despite its troubles, Zynga's second quarter revenues reached $332.5 million, up 4 percent over the first quarter of 2012. Zynga now boasts more than 300 million monthly active users, including 33 million daily active users on mobile. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) has introduced The Mobile Device Privacy Act, which would require companies to inform consumers if tracking software is installed on their mobile device or included in applications. The bill states that companies must obtain customer consent before monitoring software begins collecting information and transmitting it to third-parties. Companies must also disclose what type of information they will collect, where data will be sent and how it will be used. "Consumers should know and have the choice to say no to software on their mobile devices that is transmitting their personal and sensitive information," Markey said. "This is especially true for parents of children and teens, the fastest growing group of smartphone users. This legislation will provide greater transparency into the transmission of consumers' personal information and empower consumers to say no to such transmission."
