There's still plenty of gold in existing copper networks

By Sean Buckley Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Sean Buckley, FierceTelecomI'd like to draw your attention to our latest eBook, Finding New Gold in Copper.

Extending fiber to every premise may be the endgame for service providers, but the reality is that many operators with existing copper networks can't financially justify that approach for either businesses or residential customers.

To tackle the disparity, service providers are often opting for Fiber to the Home (FTTH)/Fiber to the Building (FTTB) in new neighborhoods, and a hybrid copper/fiber approach via Fiber to the Node (FTTN) or Fiber to the Curb/Cabinet (FTTC) in existing neighborhoods.

On the residential side, FTTN has a number of high profile followers, including U.S.-based carriers such AT&T, CenturyLink and Cincinnati Bell, and European carriers such as BT and Telekom Austria.

Complementing existing and new DSL flavors, particularly ADSL2+ and VDSL2, are three key techniques that claim to theoretically squeeze more out of existing copper plant:

  • Dynamic Spectrum Management: Pioneered for DSL networks by John Cioffi, now CEO and Chairman of ASSIA, DSM enables service providers to enhance rate and reach by reducing or eliminating crosstalk and interference in a DSL network.

  • Vectoring: Like DSM, vectoring can also mitigate crosstalk issues that can effect large-scale deployments of DSL lines delivering 15 Mbps speeds and above. With the advent of DSM Level 3, a combination of DSM with vectored DSL, proponents claim the technology can not only help service providers expand their respective DSL speeds, but also provide information on how to isolate faults on the copper plant.

  • Phantom Mode DSL: DSL Phantom Mode creates what is called a virtual or "phantom" channel that supplements the two-pair wire configuration for copper transmission lines. Experimental lab tests conducted by both Alcatel-Lucent and Huawei demonstrated downstream transmission speeds of 300 Mbps and 700 Mbps downstream rate, respectively, over 400 meters.

But the utility of copper isn't just a consumer broadband data application. Copper is finding uses in the business services market and even in automobiles. ...Continue reading this Editor's Corner online

Today's Top Stories

1. Cox Business offers HFC-based 80, 100 Mbps services

By Sean Buckley Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Cox Communications on Wednesday launched an HFC-based version of its Ethernet service that puts 80 and 100 Mbps speeds in the hands of the small- to medium-sized businesses (SMB).

Initially Cox will offer the new speed tiers in Acadiana, La., with plans to enable other markets later this year and early in 2013.

For customers that require higher speed fiber connections, Cox can provide up to 10G speeds.

But the new services aren't just about speeds alone. The MSO backs up the offering with service level agreements (SLAs) in addition to a suite of backup and security products to protect customers' data.

Acadiana has been a key area of growth and investment for Cox Business. Over the past four years, Cox Business invested over $12 million in expanding its fiber network in the Lafayette and Acadiana area.

The service provider has a redundant fiber ring in Lafayette and a regional fiber ring throughout Acadiana, Cox Business has a larger fully redundant fiber ring that serves the South Louisiana region by connecting Lafayette, Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Having this broad fiber connectivity is a key element to Cox Businesses' ability to serve both SMBs and larger businesses.

Cox Business has become a growing threat in the business service market, particularly with its Ethernet-based services. Coupled with fellow cable MSO Time Warner Cable, Cox Business has been a constant fixture on Vertical Systems Group's (VSG) mid-year Ethernet Leaderboard, a report that measures the top Ethernet providers in terms of port shares sold for a number of years.

The service provider's ongoing dedication to expansion and responding to various customer segment needs has helped the competitive provider, which got its start as mainly a wholesale fiber provider in 1993, achieve $1.2 billion in revenue last year.

2. CyrusOne chooses Brocade routers to interconnect Texas cities

By Samantha Bookman Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Cincinnati Bell (NYSE: CBB)-owned CyrusOne on Thursday announced that it will use Brocade's MLXe series routers to interconnect its data center facilities in four Texas cities and remote customer locations.

The data center provider is moving forward in its quest to create the first statewide Internet Exchange in the United States by the end of 2012, enabling high-density data traffic at speeds of 10GbE to 100GbE between its facilities in Dallas, Austin, San Antonio and Houston.

CyrusOne's ambitious IXP (Internet Exchange Provider) buildout in Texas will target some major verticals. Its Houston area data center facilities serve many of the oil industry's biggest companies as well as enterprises of varying sizes.

"This deployment represents a paradigm shift in the way the oil and gas seismic industry exchanges massive amounts of data," said Josh Snowhorn, vice president and general manager of Interconnection at CyrusOne. "Brocade brings a great reputation for performance and uptime to the CyrusOne platform, as proven by its success serving the largest Internet Exchanges worldwide."

On Monday, CyrusOne unveiled its latest data center facility in the Dallas suburb of Carrollton, Texas--the largest in the state at 670,000 square feet.

CyrusOne filed IPO papers in August, a move that it hopes will raise $300 million to pay debts. The company has recorded steady expansion not just in U.S. markets but also its entry into the European market in May 2011 and its opening of a data center in Singapore earlier this year. The data center provider was acquired by Cincinnati Bell in May 2010, but is run as a separate company, and will most likely file as a REIT (real estate investment trust), according to a Data Center Knowledge report.

3. Alpheus Communications attracts more reseller agents to channel program

By Sean Buckley Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Alpheus Communications, a competitive business-focused service provider operating in Texas, on Tuesday said it has seen a strong increase in agents joining its channel program.

Since launching the program only six month ago, participating agents reported they are seeing immediate returns from selling Alpheus' suite of data services, including Ethernet, Dedicated Internet Access (DIA), and private line services.

One agent that has seen good results from joining the channel partner program is CSG Affiliates. In just four months CSG said that it has sold a solution, including 1G data-center connectivity, Internet access, and private line, to a financial services company in Texas.

Not surprisingly, a key selling point for CSG is Alpheus' on-net fiber and Ethernet over Copper reach. As of mid-July, Alpheus reported that it had 88,000 buildings are qualified to get the service provider's Metro Ethernet services via fiber, Ethernet over Copper (EoC) or traditional TDM.

"We partnered with Alpheus because they are a very strong carrier in Texas where there is a high demand for heavier bandwidth and Ethernet services," said Dale Stewart, president and CEO of CSG Affiliates, in a release about their membership in Alpheus' channel program. "You reach these buildings with fiber, and Alpheus has a great fiber network."

In addition to CSG, Alpheus has attracted four other agents including two Houston-based agents, including Simplified Communications Group and consultIP, Dallas-based RealCom Solutions, and San Antonio-based Liquid Networx.

With on-net building access being a key element to delivering higher speed Ethernet and private-line services, Alpheus will continue attract more agents to its channel program as it continually expands the reach of its fiber network reach in the Dallas, Austin, San Antonio and Houston (aka DASH) markets.

4. Masergy debuts new cloud-based voice service suite

By Sean Buckley Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Masergy Communications on Wednesday debuted a new service that it says will help large businesses migrate from legacy premise-based PBX voice systems to a cloud-based unified communications (UC) service.

Given the financial investment that many large businesses have in their PBX systems, the new Global Cloud Communications service allows an enterprise to add new advanced voice technology such as SIP into their own unique business processes.

A key focus of the service is flexibility and understanding the unique needs of each customer. Instead of making an enterprise just conduct a wholesale change-out of their PBX system, Masergy allows customers to implement either a SIP Trunking-based voice and data system or move directly into a fully-hosted UC environment.

After analyzing a business customer's needs, Masergy said it will leverage elements of its "new Intelligent SIP Trunking and Hosted Unified Communications products to form a unique deployment plan for each client." From there, Masergy's provisioning team will implement that customer's custom on its global platform.

"Masergy's Global Cloud Communications service provides businesses with a hybrid solution that is unique for each company," said John Dumbleton, Masergy's senior vice president of business development. "This approach leverages both SIP trunking and hosted unified communications, creating an easy, custom-built path for the enterprise to transition from legacy PBX technology to a fully hosted, cloud-based UC network."

Traditionally known as a data-centric service provider, Masergy immediately added a managed voice service capabilities to its cloud portfolio when it purchased Broadcore Communications in July, which is the basis for the new service set.

Now that it has integrated Broadcore into its global MPLS network, Masergy will offer a host of UC services, including: consultation, Hosted UC, and SIP Trunking.

5. MegaPath serves up set of new cloud hosted services

By Sean Buckley Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

MegaPath on Wednesday debuted a set of enterprise, private and hybrid cloud hosting solutions that both SMB and large business customers can use to host their applications, data and storage with a third-party supplier.

The new Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)-based behind-the-firewall service set leverages VMware's vCloud platform.

Delivered over its MPLS network, the three cloud options are built to meet specific needs of each customer type:

  • Enterprise Cloud: With the enterprise cloud, a customer can leverage dedicated resource pools that the CLEC said can be scaled up or down to accommodate cyclical business needs, meaning they have the computing resources they need.

  • Private Cloud: A customer can use the Private Cloud to either replace legacy dedicated servers and save the associated space, power and maintenance costs, or use VMware's Site Recovery Manager (SRM) to provide a Disaster Recovery site for their internal VMware-based solution.

  • Hybrid Cloud: Focused on customers that want to keep some applications in house while handing others non-essential functions like e-mail to a third party, the Hybrid Cloud option provides both dedicated hosting and co-location options with servers, storage, firewalls and load-balancing equipment that can be used as a standalone service or part of a hybrid enterprise or private cloud solution.

Given the potential risks that come with outsourcing data storage and security to a third party, MegaPath has connected all of these services to its own OC-192, meaning it has greater control over ensuring the customer experience. For those customers that want to keep tabs on their data at all times, each option can be fully managed by the CLEC or self-managed using the VMware vCloud Director.

By having all three of these options available, MegaPath can accommodate both SMBs who lack IT resources and enterprise customers that are looking for a less expensive yet safe way to migrate to the cloud.

Greg Davis, Vice President of Cloud Services, MegaPath, said the service is best suited for "Customers who seek a faster way to grow their business without additional capital investments, or lack the IT resources to address security compliance issues."
