Apple's secret weapon isn't the iPhone 5 - it's the iPhone 4

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Phil Goldstein

Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 5 launch has dominated the mobile world since it was unveiled Wednesday, and justifiably a lot of attention is being paid to its larger screen, faster processor, inclusion of LTE and lack of NFC. However, Apple's biggest coup in this announcement was its decision to make the iPhone 4 free when paired with a two-year contract.

iPhone 5

Click here for complete coverage of the iPhone 5.

Apple has made older versions of the iPhone free on contract in the past, and did so most recently with the iPhone 3GS for AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) in the United States. The difference now is that CDMA versions of the iPhone 4 at Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) and Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) will now also be free on contract, in addition to the iPhone 4 at AT&T. Further, smaller carriers that recently launched the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 earlier this year are now also likely to drop the price of the iPhone 4. (However, a free iPhone doesn't mean that carriers' data plans are any cheaper.)

I think a free iPhone 4 will help the carriers sell more iPhones, but ultimately it will benefit Apple, especially as Apple competes with other handset makers at the low-to-mid range of the smartphone market. "How do you create an inexpensive phone that can compete with an iPhone 4? You probably can't," said Current Analysis analyst Avi Greengart. And since Apple did not really change the design of the phone with the iPhone 5 (it just made it taller) "the free phone feels like the premium phone of just a day ago."...Continued

Today's Top News

1. Verizon, Sprint won't support simultaneous voice/data in iPhone 5

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 5 will not support simultaneous voice and data transmissions for CDMA customers on Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) and Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S), but will do so for AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) customers, according to Apple and the carriers.

AT&T iPhone customers have always had the ability to use cellular voice and data at the same time, and AT&T will continue to retain to that advantage over its competitors.

"iPhone 5 supports simultaneous voice and data on GSM-based 3G and LTE networks," Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris told the New York Times. "It is not yet possible to do simultaneous voice and data on networks that use CDMA for voice and LTE for data in a single radio design."

"The iPhone 5 is designed to allow customers to make voice calls on the Verizon Wireless network and surf the Web on Wi-Fi," Verizon spokeswoman Brenda Raney said in a statement distributed to media outlets. "It was an Apple decision." Sprint confirmed to The Verge that its iPhone 5 will not support simultaneous voice and data and AT&T confirmed its iPhone 5 will.

What is the main reason behind the split? CDMA networks have always been unable to produce simultaneous voice and data transmissions, but some new LTE smartphones, such as Samsung Electronics' Galaxy S III for Verizon, can do so. Anand Shimpi, editor-in-chief of AnandTech, told the NYT that Apple did not add in a third antenna to the iPhone, which would have allowed its CDMA iPhones to support simultaneous voice and data. Additionally, with the introduction of Voice over LTE technology in the next few years, the issue may become less relevant.

In other iPhone 5 specification news, Sprint confirmed to PhoneScoop that the iPhone 5 will not support its HD Voice solution, which it is implementing as part of its Network Vision network modernization plan. As PC Magazine explained, Sprint is using a new codec called EVRC-NW over its CDMA 1x Advanced network to produce its HD Voice service, and the iPhone 5 does not support that.

Meanwhile, in a bit of intriguing news for AT&T's iPhone 5, the device will apparently have support for more LTE bands than what Apple listed on its website. The GSM variant for AT&T will support AT&T's 700 MHz B Block as well as its AWS Band 4 (2100/1700 MHz), but according to FCC documents unearthed by ExtremeTech, the AT&T device also supports LTE in the 1900 MHz PCS band and the cellular band at 800/850 MHz.

AT&T has said it will turn off its 2G service in those bands over the next few years and could presumably turn on LTE service there, but it is not clear if AT&T requested that Apple add support for those bands. An AT&T spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

2. Apple iPhone 5 pre-orders exhaust supply in 1 hour, indicate crush of demand

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Demand for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 5 is riding high if the amount of pre-orders the company received this morning is to be believed. Apple ran out of stock for pre-orders in about an hour and is now telling customers on its website that iPhone 5s ordered now will ship in two weeks.

Pre-orders began at 3:01 a.m. ET today and, according to multiple reports, the traffic crashed Apple's servers for its online store. The demand for the iPhone 5 was seemingly greater than it was last year when the iPhone 4S was introduced; it took 22 hours for Apple to run out of stock then. CNET reported online stores for carriers, including AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) and Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S), also crashed briefly before returning. Pre-orders that were placed before Apple ran out of stock will ship by Sept. 21, the day that the iPhone 5 goes on sale in stores.

As of mid-morning East Coast time, the online stores for Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ), AT&T and Sprint showed that the iPhone 5 was in stock and would be delivered by Sept. 21.

Analysts have speculated that Apple might sell as many as 10 million iPhones by the end of September. Some analysts think that Apple may sell 33 million iPhones in the third quarter, according to Reuters, which would be Apple's third-highest quarter ever.

The iPhone 5 will go on sale Sept. 21 in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore. That will give Apple a full week to record iPhone sales for the third quarter. Apple said more countries will follow the week after and that by December 2010 the iPhone 5 will be available in 100 countries for 240 carriers.

"We are positively surprised that this iPhone rollout is Apple's fastest yet," Barclays Capital analysts wrote in a research note, according to Reuters, adding that they had previously thought supply constraints for components would dampen sales. "Given this pace it would seem Apple is very well positioned for upside in the December quarter."

3. Isis delays launch to fine-tune customer experience

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

The Isis mobile wallet and payments network is going to miss its target of launching this summer because it is still fine-tuning the overall customer experience, according to a senior Isis executive.

In an interview with FierceMobileContent, Jaymee Johnson, the head of marketing for Isis, said that the platform will not be ready by Sept. 21, the start of fall, and that the company will give more updates about its progress in October. Isis previously said it would launch this summer.

Isis, which is being pushed by Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ), AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) and T-Mobile USA, has been steadily building support among merchants, payments providers and credit card companies. Johnson said there are now "hundreds" of merchants in Austin, Texas, and Salt Lake City--its initial launch markets--ready to support the platform.

Johnson said there isn't one particular reason for the delay, and that the company is working through a handful of final issues to improve the customer experience. "I would characterize where we are as checking items off the punch list," he said.

The Isis executive said the company is making sure everything from buying a phone with Near Field Communications to downloading the Isis app and using the phone in a store is working properly. "It's really more of a commitment from an end-to-end customer experience to make sure all elements of that process are working well," he said.

Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile first announced Isis in late 2010. The Isis digital wallet allows consumers to conduct point-of-sale transactions, redeem coupons and use store merchant loyalty cards via NFC-enabled devices and corresponding point-of-sale reader technologies. Isis has inked partnerships with American Express, Chase, Capital One and Barclaycard. In addition, six device manufacturers--HTC, LG, Motorola Mobility, Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM), Samsung and Sony--have committed to introducing products that support the Isis platform. In March Isis announced agreements with point-of-sale terminal manufacturers VeriFone, Ingenico, ViVOtech and Equinox Payments.

Johnson said Isis has made sure that customers' mobile wallets will be much more secure than their existing wallets. He said that since the Isis wallet is PIN-protected, account information cannot be accessed directly from the wallet on the phone. In addition, he said customers can call carriers to have the contents of their mobile wallet remotely wiped if they lose their phone. "We are confident that security will be strong."

Much has been made of Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) decision not to include NFC in the iPhone 5, with some seeing it as a big blow to the technology. However, Johnson said Isis is still "bullish" on NFC. He said the mobile payments industry has coalesced around the technology as its standard.

Johnson declined to comment on when Isis' first two markets will launch or on how many Isis will add after that. "It is certainly our intention to grow on a much broader basis in 2013," he said.

4. Sony Mobile chief: We won't make Windows Phone 8 smartphones

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Sony Mobile Communications does not have plans to use Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone 8 software, according to the head of Sony Mobile. The comments serve to clear up confusion about Sony's stance on the platform.

"We have no current plans for it," Sony Mobile CEO Kunimasa Suzuki said in an interview with German newspaper Die Welt. Speculation about Sony's plans for Windows Phone flared up last week after a regional Sony Mobile chief seemed to leave open the door for working with Microsoft on smartphones.

"Sony's strategy is one of openness. Microsoft is a Sony partner with the likes of our VAIO laptops and it's integrated onto our tablets," Pierre Perron, Sony Mobile's managing director for the UK and Ireland, told Mobile Magazine last week. "As far as Xperia smartphones go, Android remains the preferred partner, although Sony is not a single partner company. We are currently investigating with the likes of Microsoft the possibility of diversifying our product strategy."

Sony's smartphones, under the Xperia brand, all run on Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android platform. Suzuki indicated that would not change and said the company is "not planning to equip our smartphones with its own [proprietary] operating system."

Sony said last month it will cut 15 percent of the workforce of Sony Mobile, or around 1,000 jobs, and will move its global mobile headquarters from Lund, Sweden, to Tokyo. According to ABI Research, Sony Mobile was the eleventh-largest handset maker in the world in the second quarter with 2 percent market share.

5. HP's Whitman vows to get back into smartphone business

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Click here to watch Whitman discuss the company's smartphone plans.

Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman said the computer maker will ultimately get back into the smartphone business, but she did not give a specific timeframe for when it would do so.

In an interview with Fox Business, Whitman said that the company needs to "ultimately offer a smartphone because in many countries of the world that would be your first computing device. We are a computing company, we have to take advantage of that form factor."

That strategy is a reversal for HP, which shut down its webOS device business (which included smartphones and tablets) just a year ago. "We are working on this," Whitman said, who took the helm at HP nearly a year ago. "We did take a detour into smartphones and we have to get it right this time. My mantra to the team is 'better right than faster than we should be there.' So we're working to make sure that when we do this it will be right thing for Hewlett-Packard and we will be successful."

Whitman declined to say when HP will unveil a new smartphone. HP discontinued sales of its webOS-powered TouchPad tablet (as well as its smartphone business) in August 2011, and the company went through a period of internal turmoil. Leo Apotheker was ousted as CEO and Whitman, a former eBay CEO, was brought into replace him. After months of speculation over what it would do with webOS, HP said in December 2011 it would keep webOS but make the operating system open source, allowing developers and others to modify and expand on the platform. Since then, former Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein, who helped spearhead webOS, left HP, along with much of the company's former webOS staff.

SPOTLIGHT ON... AT&T announces agreement with union over healthcare costs for wireless workers

AT&T (NYSE:T) said it inked a deal with the Communications Workers of America to implement "modest" increases in the healthcare costs for roughly 40,000 AT&T wireless employees nationwide. Further, according to the Wall Street Journal, AT&T will likely have to conduct further negotiations with its unionized wireless employees over other topics including wages. The WSJ reported that wages, pensions and other issues for AT&T's wireless workers are covered by regional unions, and at least one major regional contract is set to expire next year. AT&T, which counts a total of almost 250,000 workers, recently inked a deal with the union covering its wireline workers over labor practices. AT&T is the only Tier 1 wireless carrier with a union covering its wireless employees. Release
