Tying the data center and WAN worlds: Dennis Brouwer, Savvis Dennis Brouwer, General Manager, Converged Cloud and Global Network Solutions for Savvis, admits he's still a relative newcomer to the cloud and hosted services game, having joined the company in May 2008. Following CenturyLink's acquisition of Savvis last year, Brouwer was tasked with tying together the data center world of Savvis with the WAN worlds that CenturyLink brings to bear from its own legacy operations and its acquisition of Qwest Communications. A key goal of Savvis is to move up the stack into managing applications for business customers. Sean Buckley, FierceTelecom's Senior Editor, caught up with Brouwer recently to talk about the integration of Savvis into CenturyLink's fold and the trends taking place in the data center and cloud services market segment. Gartner names Avaya, Cisco, Microsoft and Siemens as 2012 UC market leaders Gartner has designated Avaya, Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO), Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) and Siemens Enterprise Communications (NYSE: SI) as leaders in the unified communications (UC) market, according to the 2012 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Unified Communications report. Companies listed by Gartner as strong challengers include Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU), Huawei, IBM (NYSE: IBM) and NEC. Niche players are Aastra Technologies, Digium, Interactive Intelligence (NASDAQ: ININ), ShoreTel (NASDAQ: SHOR) and Toshiba. Mitel (NASDAQ: MITL) is listed as a visionary but with less ability to execute than the market leaders. Gartner rated companies according to four UC characteristics: mobility, openness, cloud and broad-solution appeal. On mobility, Gartner said that this year it is giving particular weight to support for mobile clients because it is a key differentiator. "Users increasingly expect full UC functionality across all mobile platforms and operating systems," the firm explained. On openness, Gartner said that enterprises expect open standards and interoperability among products. "In particular, enterprises expect good-quality support for SIP, XMPP and H.323 integrations, as well as a clear longer-term commitment to inter-vendor interoperability and federation," Gartner related. Integration of on-premise UC systems with cloud and hybrid UC services will play an important role for unified communications as a service (UCaaS) products in the future. Gartner noted that UCaaS is introducing new players into the market, such as Google. Gartner explained that successful UC products depend on appealing to a broad audience of enterprise decision makers, such as telecom, data communications, IT and audio-visual groups, as well as business users. "Success will require advancing a full set of UC capabilities within enterprises, which will result in the displacement of those long-term incumbents that lack broad appeal," the market research firm concluded. Virtualization security market in Asia Pacific to jump ten-fold by 2017 The market for virtualization security products in the Asia Pacific region is expected to jump more than ten-fold, reaching $549.6 million in revenues in 2017, up from $48.4 million last year, according to research by Frost & Sullivan. Currently, the manageability of virtual infrastructures is a bigger priority than the security of those infrastructures. Security vendors are also held back by the lack of compliance support on securing the virtualization infrastructure and the high costs of security products, noted Frost & Sullivan Industry Manager Cathy Huang. Greater awareness of the security risks associated with virtualization will fuel growth in the market, Huang said. The hypervisor, which manages virtual machines, is a particularly sensitive security target, because its breach could compromise all hosted workloads. The market is almost expected to get a boost from the maturing regulation and standards, such as the latest credit card security guidelines for virtual infrastructure under the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS). In a supplement to the PCI DSS, the PCI Security Standards Council offers a number of recommendations for virtualization security, including: - evaluate risks associated with virtual technologies,
- restrict physical access to systems,
- implement defense in depth,
- isolate security functions,
- enforce least privilege and separation of duties and
- harden the hypervisor and virtual machines.
Huang cautioned end users that deploying virtualization technology in a business environment without implementing adequate security measures could increase costs and reduce agility. "To succeed in the market, vendors' virtualization security solutions must be able to optimize resource-intensive tasks. Vendors that provide consistent policy management across physical and virtual environments will stand out," Huang noted. Australia's Telstra to expand VoIP beyond business customers Telstra CEO David Thodey on Sunday told shareholders the Australian telecom firm would expand its VoIP offering beyond businesses to consumers. "We will be taking it out to a broader consumer base. We've just got to pick the right time for that because it is just balancing the market trends and then just how we're responding to it," he told shareholders, according to a report by ZDNet. Prior to launching VoIP for business customers last year, Telstra invested $600 million to upgrade 1,600 exchanges across Australia, according to the article. Telstra is also considering expanding VoIP to mobile phones, said Thodey, but said its first priority is to work on the VoIP pricing model: "Now the charging model is what we're working on at the moment and we'll come out with that in the next six months." Andy Penn, the company's chief financial officer, told shareholders that the company had no plans to buy back shares. He said the company was investing reserve cash in its LTE 4G network. "At the moment, our first decision has been to invest half a billion in extending our LTE network. Building on that when we can afford to do that is the right opportunity," Penn said. Tellabs offers mini terminals to lower optical LAN costs Telecom equipment maker Tellabs has launched its mini optical network terminals (ONTs) designed to lower the cost of optical local area network (LAN) deployment for enterprises. The mini ONTs can be installed inside office walls or cubicle raceways, which frees up desktop space and cuts deployment costs. According to the company, the Tellabs 100 series mini ONT reduces cabling and space requirements, eliminates fiber jumpers and desk/wall mounts and requires no power or battery backup at the desktop. Tellabs says that, compared to a conventional active Ethernet LAN, its optical LAN saves up to 70 percent in capital costs, lowers power consumption by 80 percent, reduces space requirements by 90 percent and reduces the cost of new building construction by 21 percent. David Dines, an analyst with ACG Research, questioned those figures. "Unfortunately, we could not see any hard data to back up these numbers," he wrote in a recent blog. Dines stressed that if Tellabs could support those estimates with hard numbers, this innovation could spur momentum for the optical LAN market. "The challenges to greater market acceptance will be 1) the inertia of active Ethernet switching being the de facto standard for LANs and 2) persuading architects, general contractors and higher level decision makers that optical LAN is a bona fide option. Both challenges are daunting but not insurmountable, and seeing how the market reacts to this new approach will be interesting," he concluded. AWS launches marketplace to buy and sell cloud capacity Cloud provider Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) Web Services is launching the Reserved Instance Marketplace, an online market that provides customers the ability to sell their Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) Reserved Instances to other businesses and organizations. Reserved Instances enable customers to make a one-time payment to reserve computing capacity for a specific period of time and receive a discount on the hourly charge for that instance, explained AWS. AWS stressed that Amazon EC2 Reserved Instances purchased on the Reserved Instance Marketplace offer the same capacity reservations as Reserved Instances purchased directly from AWS. The marketplace "takes the pain of poor guesswork out of cloud capacity planning," observed James Staten, principal analyst serving infrastructure and operations professionals at Forrester, in a blog post. "[C]apacity planning remains a black art. But we no longer need to take the black eye that comes with capacity planning--the wasted overspending. Now you can correct these errors in planning by selling the overage back to the market," Staten added. Enterprises can recoup the costs of cloud capacity that they do not use, minus a 12 percent service fee charged by AWS. But firms need to determine that they will not use instances early enough that they will still be valuable to the market, Staten explained. "What's most interesting about this move is that it is a business innovation--not a technology innovation--and one that we expect will drive up AWS customer loyalty and differentiation for enterprises," he wrote. The Forrester analyst noted that the marketplace also enables companies to buy instances at a lower price than the spot market rate and without a multi-year commitment. Spotlight: New Zealand UC market to grow 9.1 percent per year Market research firm Frost & Sullivan predicts that demand for cloud-based unified communications (UC) will boost the New Zealand UC market by 9.1 percent annually through 2018. In 2011, the New Zealand UC market grew by 6.6 percent, fueled by demand for voice-based solutions and videoconferencing endpoints. Cloud-based access makes UC available to a wider range of organizations and end users; as the model matures, security and privacy issues, which are currently the biggest concerns, will be mitigated. This shift from an on-premise to a cloud-based or hosted model will be the vehicle for growth in the medium to long term in New Zealand, according to Frost & Sullivan.
