1. Google's Rubin: 'No disputing' Aliyun OS is built on Android

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Days after stopping manufacturing partner Acer from launching a smartphone running Chinese Internet giant Alibaba's Aliyun mobile operating system, Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) continues to clarify its position, maintaining there is "no disputing" Aliyun's status as an Android-based OS.

Andy Rubin

       Andy Rubin

Acer abruptly canceled the Aliyun device late last week after Google expressed concerns about the product. An Acer official told Dow Jones the company "will continue to communicate with Google," adding it "still wants to launch the new smartphone based on Alibaba software." Alibaba said that Acer "was notified by Google that if the product runs Aliyun OS, Google will terminate its Android-related cooperation and other technology licensing with our partner."

In a Google+ post published Friday, Google Senior Vice President of Mobile Andy Rubin said "The Aliyun OS incorporates the Android runtime and was apparently derived from Android. Based on our analysis of the apps available at http://apps.aliyun.com, the platform tries to, but does not succeed in being compatible." Alibaba Vice President John Spelich told CNet, "Aliyn is not a fork [of Android]. Ours is built on open-source Linux... Aliyun's runtime environment, which is the core of the OS, consists of both its own Java virtual machine, which is different from Android's Dalvik virtual machine, and its own cloud app engine, which supports HTML5 web applications."

Rubin fired back this weekend. "Hey John Spelich--We agree that the Aliyun OS is not part of the Android ecosystem and you're under no requirement to be compatible," he writes. "However, the fact is, Aliyun uses the Android runtime, framework and tools. And your app store contains Android apps (including pirated Google apps). So there's really no disputing that Aliyun is based on the Android platform and takes advantage of all the hard work that's gone into that platform by the [Open Handset Alliance]. So if you want to benefit from the Android ecosystem, then make the choice to be compatible. Its easy, free and we'll even help you out. But if you don't want to be compatible, then don't expect help from OHA members that are all working to support and build a unified Android ecosystem."

Google established the Open Handset Alliance in 2007 in conjunction with Android's launch. While non-OHA companies like Amazon can build devices running forked versions of Android, Google can step in to stop OHA members like Acer from taking actions and releasing products that threaten to fragment the Android ecosystem.

2. Report: Apple inks iOS maps alliance with Yandex, search deal in the works

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Yandex will power mobile mapping services for the Russian market when Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) new iOS 6 operating system rolls out to the country's consumers Wednesday, and reports say Yandex could soon replace Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) as Apple's default Russian mobile search partner as well.

Citing sources close to the situation, TechCrunch reports Apple and Yandex are negotiating an agreement to incorporate Yandex search services directly into the Russian version of the Safari mobile browser. This past weekend, Russian bloggers discovered Yandex's geosearch API integrated into the iOS 6 Golden Master, seeded to registered developers last week--The Wall Street Journal reports anyone using an iOS6-based device in Russia will now receive Yandex map information, and consumers outside of Russia seeking mapping insight about the nation will be fed Yandex data as well.

A Yandex spokesperson declined to comment on the Apple deal. The firm accounts for a little more than 60 percent of all Russian search traffic although Google is gaining ground and now accounts for 22 percent of the market.

The Yandex agreement continues Apple's efforts to reduce the iOS platform's reliance on Google services. iOS 6, which powers the forthcoming iPhone 5, dumps Google Maps data in favor of Apple's new in-house Maps feature. Google Maps could lose up to a third of its mobile users with the launch of Apple's alternative service, according to research firm Analysys Mason. Earlier this year, Apple also replaced Google with Baidu as its default mobile search provider in China.

3. Square closes $200M Series D round, transactions grow to $8B a year

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Square has closed its Series D financing round, led by investors including Citi Ventures, Rizvi Traverse Management and Starbucks Coffee Company. The New York Times reports the round totals about $200 million, valuing the mobile payments startup at $3.25 billion.

Square enables small businesses and other users to accept credit and debit purchases by swiping cards through its signature card reader, a small dongle that plugs into their smartphone's audio jack. The dongle is for sale at roughly 20,000 U.S. retail locations including Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Best Buy, OfficeMax, Radio Shack, Target and Walmart stores. Square also powers the Pay with Square and Square Register applications. The firm said it now processes more than $8 billion in payments on an annualized basis, up from $1 billion just a year ago.

As of June 2012, more than 2 million businesses and individuals across the U.S. are using the Square service, up from 1 million just six months earlier. Square plans to expand to the international market later this year, and beginning this fall, Starbucks' 7,000 company-owned U.S. stores will begin processing all credit and debit card transactions using Square's mobile commerce technologies, a move to slash operational costs.

Square nevertheless faces competition from a host of rivals including PayPal Here, which enables small businesses and other users to process transactions by swiping cards through its own, triangle-shaped dongle. PayPal Here went live this past March, and more than 200,000 merchants signed up for the service within its first month of availability.

4. Shazam extends second-screen tagging to all TV shows

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Shazam is extending its second-screen TV companion app to all programs on U.S. airwaves, enabling mobile device users to access cast and guest star bios, Hollywood gossip, trivia and related information, as well as comment on the show via Facebook, Twitter and Google+ (NASDAQ:GOOG).

The free Shazam application identifies music, broadcast media and advertising. Users hold their handset to the audio feed, and the app captures a clip that is run through the company's database to find an exact match, delivering information and interactive experiences around the content in question. U.S. users can now tag any television show they're watching regardless of network, time of day or programming category--for scripted programs, Shazam will list the featured cast members, complete with links to information sites like IMDb and Wikipedia, and for live sports, the app will deliver stats, scores and schedules. Users may also see what shows their Facebook friends are tagging and comment on those tags directly within the Shazam app.

Shazam previously developed customized second-screen promotions around programming including the Super Bowl, the Grammy Awards and American Idol. "According to industry studies, 86 percent of smartphone owners use their mobile device while watching TV and, with our expansion into television, we've seen a surge of activity due to recent Shazam-enabled events such as NBC's Olympic broadcast, where more than one million people tagged the closing ceremony, as well as the U.S. Open tennis grand slam event on CBS earlier this month," said Shazam CEO Andrew Fisher.

Shazam is available across operating systems including Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS, Google's Android, Research In Motion's (NASDAQ:RIMM) BlackBerry and Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone. More than 250 million subscribers worldwide now use the app.

5. Shutterfly acquires mobile photo app developer Penguin Digital

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Shutterfly has acquired Penguin Digital, which develops mobile software enabling users to create prints and related physical merchandise based on photos snapped with their smartphone. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Penguin Digital launched its Mobile Photo Factory application for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS platform in early 2012. The MoPho app enables consumers to access photos from their iPhone or their Facebook and Instagram accounts to create device cases, mugs, key chains, apparel and canvas prints. In addition to the standalone app, Penguin Digital also supplies a software development kit enabling third-party programmers to integrate photo printing and product creation capabilities into their own mobile apps.

Shutterfly said it will rebrand and update the Mobile Photo Factory application over the coming months. Penguin Digital founders Reuven Moskowitz and Josh Friedman, along with the rest of their team, will also spearhead Shutterfly's new technology center in New York City.

Shutterfly launched online photo sharing and custom publishing services in 1999, releasing its first iOS app a decade later. The free service enables iPhone and iPad owners to upload, share and view photos on the go.

SPOTLIGHT ON... Survey finds half of U.S. online users have downloaded mobile apps

Close to half of the U.S. online population has downloaded an app to their mobile device according to a new survey conducted by Frank N. Magid and Associates on behalf of the Application Developers Alliance. Sixty-percent of the U.S. online population owns app-capable mobile devices--74 percent of those consumers use mobile apps, but only a quarter have paid for an app. The survey adds that a third of users plan to use apps more often and about a third of non-app users say they are likely to begin using apps within the next six months.
