1. Google acquires Snapseed photo sharing app to rival Instagram's dominance

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) has acquired Nik Software, the developer behind iOS photo-sharing application Snapseed, pitting its Google+ social network head-to-head with the wildly popular Instagram app, which was acquired by rival Facebook earlier this year. Google and Nik Software did not disclose terms of the deal.

More than 9 million iOS device owners now use Snapseed, which Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) named its 2011 iPad App of the Year. The app enables consumers to shoot and edit photos, apply a variety of imaging filters and share their work via Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and Instagram. The Nik Software website states the company is presently working on a version of Snapseed optimized for devices running Google's Android mobile operating system.

"We want to help our users create photos they absolutely love," said Google Senior Vice President of Social Vic Gundotra in a post announcing the deal.

According to Gundotra, Google+ now boasts more than 400 million total users across the desktop and mobile, including 100 million monthly users. While the addition of the Snapseed app should boost the service, Google+ nevertheless remains far off the pace set by Facebook, which touts 955 million monthly active users worldwide, including 543 million mobile monthly active users.

Facebook acquired the Instagram photo-sharing app in April 2012. Originally valued at $1 billion, the deal dropped to $715 million by the time it earned Federal Trade Commission approval in late August, a victim of Facebook's plunging stock price. More than 80 million iOS and Android device owners use Instagram, and the app regularly records more than 100,000 new installs every day.

Established in 1995, Nik Software first generated attention by rolling out desktop imaging services including Color Efex Pro, HDR Efex Pro, Sharpener Pro, Silver Efex Pro and Viveza. The company expanded into the mobile segment with Snapseed's 2011 launch.

2. Twitter rebuilds iPad app with new profiles, photo streams

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Twitter is rolling out a completely overhauled version of its mobile social networking application for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad, promising significant speed and usability improvements as well as new personalization features.

Twitter for iPad

Twitter for iPad 5.0 supports one-touch access to photos, videos and Web page summaries.

Twitter for iPad 5.0 is highlighted by a revamped timeline supporting one-touch access to photos, videos and Web page summaries. From there, users can tap an item to view images, play videos or read Web links in fullscreen mode.

The revised Twitter for iPad also brings new discovery tools collecting news stories popular within the user's network, as well as tweets and accounts that are followed and marked as "favorite"  by people they know. Users may additionally access new tools to track their social interactions and more efficiently determine who has followed or mentioned them, or retweeted or designated their posts as "favorites."

Twitter is also updating its iPad and corresponding iPhone and Android apps with new profiles featuring header photos. "[The header photo] appears consistently above your Tweets on iPad, mobile apps and twitter.com, and you can change it anytime," said Twitter Product Manager Sung Hu Kim. "You can also remember the moments you've shared on Twitter by swiping through your photo stream on your profile or tapping photos to go fullscreen."

Twitter CEO Dick Costolo announced the redesigned Twitter apps Tuesday morning during an appearance on NBC's Today. Costolo said there are now 140 million Twitter users worldwide, generating 340 million tweets every day. Twitter is now valued at $8 billion.

3. MasterCard delivers mobile payment SDK for Android, BlackBerry

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

MasterCard released a new mobile payment software development kit enabling card issuers, network operators, merchants and third-party developers to build Android and BlackBerry applications integrating its PayPass contactless payment technology.

The MasterCard PayPass User Interface SDK is free to license and includes API code libraries, API specification documentation, sample UI application code, white-label reference UI tools and a testing suite to create proximity payment mobile UI apps, mobile banking apps and mobile wallet apps with support for the Near Field Communications-based PayPass system. MasterCard notes it has also streamlined the UI approval process to help customers more quickly and efficiently bring PayPass-enabled mobile services to market. To download the SDK, click here.

MasterCard notes it has already approved more than 70 NFC-equipped phones for PayPass compatibility, including Samsung's Galaxy S3, HTC's One X, Sony's Xperia S and Research In Motion's (NASDAQ:RIMM) BlackBerry Bold 9900. PayPass-enabled devices leverage a tiny microchip and radio antenna embedded within the phone, wirelessly transmitting payment details to a corresponding point-of-sale reader. The reader then verifies the transaction with the consumer's bank. The PayPass terminal network spans more than 400,000 merchants worldwide.

PayPass technologies also support the Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Wallet tap-and-pay service, which is presently limited to a handful of Android phones. MasterCard additionally has pledged to support Isis, the forthcoming nationwide m-commerce network spearheaded by Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ), AT&T (NYSE:T) and T-Mobile USA.

4. GREE scoops up 'Dino Life' developer App Ant Studios

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Japanese gaming giant GREE continues to strengthen its U.S. presence by acquiring San Francisco-based App Ant Studios, the mobile social gaming startup behind the Android title Dino Life. Financial details were not disclosed.

Founded by veterans of companies including Electronic Arts, Sony Ericsson and Yahoo, App Ant collaborated with GREE to create the free Dino Life, which challenges gamers to collect dinosaurs, decorate their prehistoric villages and complete caveman quests. All members of App Ant's team will be integrated into GREE, with its four founders assuming leadership roles within the company's Game Development and Engineering teams.

App Ant collaborated with GREE to create Dino Life, which challenges gamers to collect dinosaurs, decorate their prehistoric villages and complete caveman quests.

GREE acquired mobile social gaming network OpenFeint in April 2011 for $104 million and purchased Funzio, the U.S. developer behind hit titles like Crime City, Modern War and Kingdom Age, for a reported $210 million this past May. The GREE catalog also includes mobile titles like Zombie Jombie, Alien Family and Pirates Age. Its network now spans more than 7,500 mobile games and more than 200 million players worldwide.

5. Keek social video platform raises $7M, adding 2M clips per month

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Social video service Keek has completed a financing round totaling $7 million, bringing total investment in the startup to more than $12 million. Cranson Capital Securities led the latest round, with Pinetree Capital and Whitecap Venture Partners also participating.

Launched on Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS and Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android in March 2012, Keek enables users to share 36-second mobile video clips (a.k.a. "keeks") with their friends and followers. Users can respond to keeks with text or video comments via "keekbacks," manage content, settings and real-time activity through a personal dashboard and monitor their performance using free analytics tools. Keek recently rolled out Klusters, which allows users to join group discussions, explore new topics or watch real-time keeks documenting current events.

According to Keek, pageviews topped the 250 million mark in August, while visits to the platform exceeded 21 million. Keek now boasts 6.4 million total videos, with users creating 2 million new videos in August alone and uploading 66,000 additional clips every day.

Photo and video sharing applications like Keek and rivals Socialcam (acquired by Autodesk in July for $60 million) and Viddy are the fastest-growing category in both Apple's App Store and the Google Play marketplace based on data published earlier this year by analytics firm Flurry. Between October 2011 to March 2012, photo and video apps increased by 89 percent in minutes spent per active user, followed by the music apps category (72 percent), productivity  (66 percent), social networking (54 percent) and entertainment (40 percent). Flurry adds that mobile app video consumption increased 52 percent during the first three months of 2012, concurrent with a 10 percent drop in online video consumption.

SPOTLIGHT ON... Is this the Ooomf app developers need to get noticed?

Putting a new app in an app store is a lot like starting a new school: It feels really crowded, no one really knows you and it's hard to figure out how to quickly become popular. This fall is packed with new smartphone launches, including Apple's iPhone 5 and Nokia's latest Lumias, and there are plenty of devices for consumers to get excited about downloading new apps. Behind the scenes, however, the venture capital community has been quietly buzzing about a new firm focused on in-store discoverability. Based in Montreal, Ooomf last month raised $500,000 from Real Ventures, BDC and others. Its services include setting up simple websites for new apps, curating and profiling compelling apps and providing mechanisms for developers to solicit feedback on logos and features on apps still in development. There are about 200 apps on the site right now, including some categorized as "coming soon." Mikael Cho, Ooomf's co-founder and CEO, talks to FierceDeveloper about the company's vision. Feature
