Yaccarino promoted to president of ad sales at NBCUniversal Comcast's (Nasdaq: CMCSA) NBCUniversal division said Wednesday that it promoted Linda Yaccarino to president of ad sales, where she'll oversee sales and marketing for its cable, broadcast and digital properties. | | Yaccarino (image source: BusinessWire) | Yaccarino, who had been NBCU's president of cable entertainment and digital advertising sales, will report to NBCU CEO Steve Burke. She joined the company in 2011, and has overseen ad sales for USA Network, Syfy, Bravo Media, E! Entertainment, Oxygen Media, Style, G4, Sprout, Chiller and other NBCU properties. NBCU has increased its focus on using interactive technology and mobile devices to drive ad sales. For example, it has teamed up with automatic content recognition (ACR) technology provider Shazam to deliver interactive programming and advertising to viewers of Syfy series Being Human. It has also created a Universal Games Network division to aggregate its online, mobile and social game ad-sales inventory. Before joining NBCU, Yaccarino was EVP and COO of Turner Entertainment Ad Sales & Marketing and Acquisitions, where she ran sales, marketing and program acquisitions for TNT, TBS, Cartoon Network, truTV, TCM and Adult Swim. Cablevision uses NFL Network as pawn in retransmission-consent battle with Tribune That carriage deal Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) struck with NFL Network in August is giving it some leverage in its retransmission-consent negotiations with Tribune Broadcasting. Cablevision lost the feed on Aug. 26 for Tribune flagship station WPIX-TV, which has a deal with the National Football League to simulcast the home opening game Thursday night for the New York Giants. Most Cablevision subscribers wouldn't have been able to watch the Giants-Carolina Panthers game unless they subscribed to NFL Network, which carries Thursday night games. But Cablevision is offering all 3 million of its subscribers a free preview of NFL Network, and using channel 11, the slot previously occupied by WPIX-TV, to distribute the football network. The loss of WPIX has forced Cablevision subscribers to turn to other networks to watch Seinfeld, Family Guy and other aired by WPIX. But the NFL Network free preview, which kicked off on Sunday, will allow it to offer subscribers one of Tribune's most valuable programs. Comcast Spotlight, NCC Media to sell advertising for cable portals managed by Synacor Synacor struck deals with Comcast Spotlight and NCC Media which will allow Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC), Charter Communications (Nasdaq: CHTR), Cox Communications and other cable operators to sell online advertising inventory on portals managed by Synacor. Under the deals announced Wednesday, Comcast Spotlight will be able to sell inventory on Synacor portals in areas where it also sells local spot TV ads. Buffalo, N.Y.-based Synacor manages TV Everywhere portals for Charter Communications, Midcontinent and other cable operators, and has also developed an authentication platform used by Turner Broadcasting and other cable programmers. NCC Media, which is owned by Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Cox Communications, handles regional ad sales for those MSOs and other cable operators. Microsoft hires CBS veteran Nancy Tellem to produce interactive TV programming Look for Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) to step up the amount of original interactive TV programming that could be distributed on the Xbox following its move to hire former CBS (NYSE: CBS) Network Television Entertainment Group president Nancy Tellem. Microsoft said Tuesday that Tellem will oversee the launch of a production studio in Los Angeles that will develop interactive and linear programming for the Xbox and other devices. While Microsoft may develop content that could compete with cable operators and networks, it's also possible that the software giant may create interactive programming that could one day be accessible by cable and satellite TV subscribers with advanced digital set-tops. Tellem will report to Microsoft studios corporate VP Phil Spencer. "Whether you are voting for your favorite contestant on a TV show or playing a game, entertainment is becoming more personalized and social, driven by the Internet and new tools to interact with content," Spencer said in a statement. "We are embarking on a new chapter with the creation of a studio dedicated to making original interactive and linear content, and I'm excited to have Nancy leading this effort," he added. New Frontier Media board fires CEO Michael Weiner New Frontier Media (Nasdaq: NOOF), one of the largest distributors of adult programming to cable and satellite TV providers, said Wednesday that it terminated CEO Michael Weiner. New Frontier didn't say why Weiner was fired. The company said that Weiner, who was also chairman of its board, has been replaced as chairman by Alan Isaacman, who has sat on its board of directors since 1999. Isaacman is the founder of Los Angeles law firm Isaacman, Kaufman & Painter. It's been a tumultuous year for New Frontier, which distributes The Erotic Network, Penthouse TV, Juicy, VaVoom and other porn channels to Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH) and other pay TV providers. In July, New Frontier announced that it agreed to pursue a sale or merger by the end of the year as part of a settlement it reached with investor Lonkloof Limited, which had been waging a proxy fight aimed at replacing the company's board of directors. New Frontier said Tuesday that a board committee is searching for its next CEO, and that in the interim, the CEO duties will be shared by CFO Grant Williams, chief legal officer Marc Callipari and CTO Scott Piper.
