ZTE to launch Firefox OS smartphones in shift away from Android ZTE is collaborating with Mozilla to build smartphones based on the open-source software development initiative's fledgling Firefox OS, a move to diversify the Chinese manufacturer's device portfolio away from Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android and Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone. Reuters reports ZTE and Mozilla plan to launch Firefox OS-based smartphones during the first quarter of 2013. "We are trying to increase our efforts in coming up with our own operating system, while introducing products based on Android," said ZTE Director of Corporate Branding & Communications David Dai Shu. "It's all part of our wider plans to create a better balance of products using various operating systems. We won't just rely on Android or Windows." The Wall Street Journal reports ZTE also plans to introduce smartphones running Microsoft's new Windows Phone 8 either late this year or early next year. Handset makers like ZTE are increasingly exploring alternatives to Android as Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) continues its patent war against the Google OS. Last week, Google halted manufacturing partner Acer's plans to launch a smartphone running Chinese Internet giant Alibaba's Aliyun mobile operating system, citing software compatibility concerns. Alibaba said that Acer "was notified by Google that if the product runs Aliyun OS, Google will terminate its Android-related cooperation and other technology licensing with our partner." Mozilla first announced the Firefox OS (formerly Boot to Gecko) last year, promising a new phone architecture that relies entirely on the Web to enable HTML5 applications with complete access to core device APIs. At launch, researcher Andreas Gal explained Mozilla would seek to "find the gaps that keep Web developers from being able to build apps that are--in every way--the equals of native apps built for the iPhone, Android and [Windows Phone]." Telefónica is scheduled to begin selling Firefox-powered smartphones in Brazil in early 2013 through its Vivo unit; the devices will be priced in the same range as feature phones. Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S), Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Smart, Telecom Italia and Telenor also have announced their support for the platform. "Firefox Mobile OS can help us drive an HTML5-based platform for creating lower-cost smartphone options for prepaid, postpaid and wholesale customers," Sprint Product Chief and Executive Vice President Fared Adib said in July. Facebook testing mobile ads on third-party iOS, Android apps Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) is trialing mobile advertisements across selected third-party iOS and Android applications, the latest step in the social network's efforts to monetize its mobile services. Facebook is rolling out banner and interstitial ads that direct consumers to mobile websites or app stores based on the user's profile and social media activities. According to TechCrunch, Facebook is syncing its anonymous user IDs with several mobile ad exchanges--when a Facebook user visits an app or site where an exchange partner has placements, the exchange instantly transmits the user ID back to Facebook to determine whether an advertiser has bid on inventory targeting the consumer's particular demographic profile. If so, Facebook pays the ad exchange some portion of the bid, and the ad is displayed to the user. "Showing mobile ads outside of Facebook is another great way for people to see relevant ads and discover new apps," Facebook said in an emailed statement. The company said the mobile ad rollout represents a "small test" and declined to identify which or how many advertisers and publishers are participating in the trial. Facebook also declined to respond to questions whether the trial is a precursor to a full-fledged mobile ad network. Last month, Facebook introduced new mobile ad units designed to drive iOS and Android app installs by targeting consumers based on the apps and games they already access on their smartphones. Developers select their intended audience demographic, budget and method of payment, and Facebook inserts ads for their apps directly into targeted users' mobile news feeds. The service is currently in beta trials. The Wall Street Journal, which first reported on the mobile ad effort in July, notes Facebook will initially bill developers on a cost-per-click basis, but eventually plans to charge them each time their app is downloaded. Facebook is on pace to generate close to $73 million in mobile ad revenues this year--about 2.8 percent of the U.S. mobile ad market--according to research firm eMarketer. Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) currently dominates the segment, controlling 55 percent of the U.S. market. Facebook reported net losses of $157 million in the quarter ending June 30, its first as a public company, and vowed to right the ship with the introduction of new and improved mobile social networking experiences. Facebook now boasts 955 million monthly active users worldwide, and 59 percent of that audience accesses the platform via mobile device. In addition, the number of Facebook users who accessed the site exclusively via mobile device increased to 102 million in the second quarter, a 23 percent quarter-over-quarter leap. That means close to 20 percent of all Facebook mobile users never even access its desktop site and never see the ads displayed there, underscoring the importance of the company's mobile ad initiatives. Leap CEO: Muve Music improves churn Muve Music, the all-you-can-eat music downloading service offered by Leap Wireless' (NASDAQ:LEAP) Cricket Communications subsidiary, is helping the company improve its churn and is considered an important competitive differentiator for the operator. | | Doug Hutcheson | Speaking at Goldman Sachs 21st Annual Communacopia Conference today, Leap CEO Doug Hutcheson told investors that company data indicates that the more subscribers use the Muve Music service, the longer they stay with the company. "We know that users when they have music will churn less," he said. Reducing churn is critical to the ailing company, which in the second quarter reported churn of 4.4 percent, up from the 4.2 percent it reported in the second quarter of 2011. The company is facing serious financial issues and in August it said it will not make its $75 million minimum wholesale purchase commitment of network access from Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S). It also reported a net loss of 289,000 customers and a net loss of $41.6 million that was more than analysts expected. Although Hutcheson did not provide specific data regarding how much Muve Music reduces churn, he did say that he believes that the Muve Music service is a key differentiator for Leap because it does not cut into the customers' tiered data plan as other mobile music services do. Cricket recently included Muve Music service with all Android rate plans for no additional cost. "We have a music service that is offered outside the rate plan because it is delivered so efficiently," Hutcheson said. "We are going to keep pushing ahead with it." Cricket offers Muve Music across six Android devices: Huawei's Mercury, Ascend Q and Ascend II, HTC's One V, Samsung Electronics' Vitality and ZTE's Chorus. According to Cricket, a majority of customers purchasing new handsets in the last 18 months have selected smartphones or Muve Music-enabled units. RIM, Marmalade offer free SDK licenses to lure developers to BlackBerry 10 Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) is partnering with cross-platform app development platform Marmalade in an effort to generate developer excitement over the beleaguered handset maker's forthcoming BlackBerry 10 mobile operating system overhaul. RIM will offer six months of free access to the Marmalade SDK license (typically priced at $499) and a free BlackBerry PlayBook tablet to any developer who ports his or her app or game to BlackBerry 10 or its PlayBook OS. The Marmalade SDK enables develop to build native apps written in C/C++ or create hybrid apps in HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript, targeting mobile devices as well as the desktop platform. In addition to BlackBerry, Marmalade supports Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS, Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android and Samsung's bada, as well as Windows and Mac for the desktop. As of July 2012, consumers have downloaded more than 3 billion applications from BlackBerry App World and install an average of 2.5 million additional apps every day. Launched in April 2009, the storefront now offers more than 90,000 applications for sale. RIM nevertheless faces considerable challenges luring developers to the BlackBerry ecosystem. This summer, the company delayed the launch of BlackBerry 10 until the first quarter of 2013, meaning the OS will miss the lucrative holiday shopping season. Many analysts believe BlackBerry 10 represents RIM's last chance to regain its footing in the increasingly competitive mobile marketplace: BlackBerry devices now make up just 9.5 percent of all smartphones across the U.S., down from a high of 43 percent in 2009, according to new data from research firm comScore. AT&T enhances DriveMode, calls for preloaded texting safety apps AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) said it will expand its free DriveMode safety application as part of the operator's ongoing effort to curb texting behind the wheel. DriveMode, available for smartphones running Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android and Research In Motion's (NASDAQ:RIMM) BlackBerry, automatically replies to incoming texts, notifying the sender that the message recipient is driving and unable to respond. On Sept. 30, AT&T will update DriveSafe to automatically turn on when the user is in a vehicle moving at speeds in excess of 25 miles per hour--DriveSafe also will automatically shut off once the vehicle falls to speeds behind 25 miles per hour for five minutes. AT&T DriveMode additionally features an Allow List giving users the flexibility to communicate with up to five contact numbers--e.g., family members or roadside assistance services--while the app is running. All 911 calls are automatically approved as well. Subscribers also can run one music and one navigation app while DriveMode is enabled. More than 80,000 AT&T customers have now downloaded the app. AT&T is calling on all mobile device manufacturers and software developers to equip every new smartphone with preloaded apps to halt texting while driving. The operator also pledged to fund third-party research on behavioral factors linked to distracted driving and potential technological solutions that tackle those conditions. AT&T reports that the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Federal Communications Commission and more than 140 other organizations have thrown their support behind the operator's No Text on Board Pledge Day event, which it is celebrating today. In honor of the event, AT&T is expanding its ItCanWait.com website to include an online simulator depicting the dangers of distracted driving.
