Is this the Ooomf app developers need to get noticed?
This fall is packed with new smartphone launches, including Apple's iPhone 5 and Nokia's latest Lumias, and there are plenty of devices for consumers to get excited about downloading new apps. Behind the scenes, however, the venture capital community has been quietly buzzing about a new firm focused on in-store discoverability. Based in Montreal, Ooomf last month raised $500,000 from Real Ventures, BDC and others. Its services include setting up simple websites for new apps, curating and profiling compelling apps and providing mechanisms for developers to solicit feedback on logos and features on apps still in development. Isis' chance of success is diminishing rapidly

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

author name

Two years is a long time, especially in the hyper-accelerated mobile ecosystem. It hasn't even been two full years since Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ), AT&T (NYSE:T) and T-Mobile USA first announced plans to launch their Isis mobile commerce network (22 months, to be exact), but it seems like two decades have passed. Think about all that's happened in the interim: Square--not even a year old when Isis first came into being--is now processing more than $8 billion in mobile payments on an annualized basis (up from $1 billion last summer). In addition, the company just wrapped up a $200 million financing round and will expand its service to 7,000 Starbucks stores this fall. Square rival PayPal expects to handle $10 billion in mobile payment transactions in 2012, an increase of 150 percent over a year ago, and next year, Discover will enable all of its 7 million U.S. merchant partners to accept PayPal mobile wallet transactions in their stores. Even Isis counterpart Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Wallet is picking up steam: Usage has doubled in the six weeks since Google rolled out a cloud-based version supporting all major credit and debit cards, although just how many consumers are actually using the Near Field Communications-based contactless payment app remains a secret.

It's becoming progressively more difficult to determine where Isis fits into this puzzle--or even if it fits, for that matter. Just hours after Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) unveiled another edition of its iPhone without NFC support, Isis revealed it will miss its target summertime launch date because it is still fine-tuning the customer experience. Isis was slated to begin consumer trials by Sept. 21--the first day of autumn--but its kickoff is now delayed indefinitely: Jaymee Johnson, Isis's head of marketing, told FierceMobileContent the company will next update its status sometime in October, but maintains there are already "hundreds" of merchants in trial markets Austin, Texas, and Salt Lake City ready to support the m-commerce platform. Johnson also said that Isis remains "bullish" on NFC despite Apple's apparent antipathy towards the technology.

Critics are already asking whether Isis will ever go live, and it's a fair question. Here's an even better question: Should Isis go live? There are increasingly few reasons to think the network will ever gain traction in the marketplace. It's not only that Isis continues to fall further behind the competition with each successive day it spends in limbo--it's also that a business model that seemed perfectly viable in November 2010 now seems positively antiquated. Isis's commitment to NFC is the first strike: As long as Apple continues to keep the technology at arm's length, NFC-based payment services are never going to catch on with the kind of tech-savvy, early-adopter consumer segment (read: iPhone owners) a service like Isis desperately needs to... continued

1. Forecast: Apple's iOS 6 launch could boost App Store revenues to $5B

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is poised to generate close to $5 billion in App Store revenues in 2012, galvanized by new iOS features like Maps and Passbook, according to a new IHS Screen Digest forecast.

Worldwide App Store revenues will reach $4.9 billion this year, up from $2.9 billion in 2011, IHS reports, adding that at the current rate of growth, Apple is on pace to command about 65 percent of the global app store market. The firm credits the expected growth to Apple's new in-house Maps platform, which replaces Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Maps data, as well as Passbook, a virtual container for boarding passes, movie tickets, retailer loyalty cards and other documents.

Worldwide App Store revenues will reach $4.9 billion this year, up from $2.9 billion in 2011.

"Until now, Apple's iOS ecosystem has focused on virtual services, such as apps, digital music and movies," said Ian Fogg, senior principal analyst for mobile at IHS. "However, with iOS version 6, Apple is moving into real-world location and financial transaction features. The new Apple Maps and Passbook apps and accompanying location platform for app developers is the keystone for this real-world expansion, and will help support the accelerated growth of the Apple App Store market in 2012."

IHS contends that while Apple Maps may initially trail rival efforts from the likes of Google and Nokia, it will quickly gain traction thanks to features like turn-by-turn navigation, which should prove especially popular in the U.S., where motorists drive twice as much as their European counterparts.

Another positive sign for iOS 6's growth: Apple's efficient software upgrade process. The company will preload iOS 6 on its new iPhone 5, hitting retail Sept. 21, and Apple has already pushed an over-the-air iOS 6 update to legacy devices. As of June 2012, 80 percent of all iOS users had upgraded to Apple's then-current iOS 5: "We expect adoption of iOS 6 to be equally swift and pervasive," Fogg said. "This means that Apple's app developers have a much greater potential target market for Apps that use iOS 6's headline new features, such as the new Apple Maps location platform, Passbook and Facebook integration. Apple understands that to build a viable ecosystem, it needs to have a large audience of users on the most recent version of iOS. Apple has been, and will continue to be, successful at delivering that up-to-date installed base."

Beyond new software and features, Apple also maintains 435 million iTunes accounts linked directly to credit cards, up from 225 million in June 2011. The seamlessness of App Store purchases and in-app transactions bodes well for the storefront's continued financial growth.

"Apple is preparing to become not just a computer company or just a mobile hardware provider, but it seeks to be a key company in all parts of consumers' lives--from entertainment, communication and business, that is now expanding into real-world transactions for travel, entertainment events, daily deals and even retail," Fogg said. "iOS 6 heralds just the start of this journey. And while Apple's Maps solution may lag that of rivals initially, Apple still has all of the capabilities to win."

2. Groupon battles Square, PayPal with new mobile payments platform

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Groupon is rolling out a new mobile payments processing platform that promises lower merchant costs than rival efforts from Square and PayPal.

grouponpayments

GrouponPayments works by accepting credit and debit card transactions via a small dongle that plugs into an iOS device's audio jack.

The nationwide launch of GrouponPayments, built into the latest version of the Groupon Merchants application for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone and iPod touch, follows a springtime pilot across the San Francisco area. Any U.S. merchant that runs a Groupon deal can now accept credit and debit payments by swiping the customer's card through a small dongle that plugs into their iOS device's audio jack--retailers and restaurateurs can also leverage the app to scan and redeem Groupon offers, add tips, apply taxes, process refunds and email customer receipts.

GrouponPayments claims 1.8 percent plus $0.15 of each MasterCard, Visa and Discover transaction, and 3 percent/$0.15 of each American Express transaction, with no hidden costs or monthly fees. In addition, non-Groupon merchants can process payments at a rate of 2.2 percent (3 percent for AmEx) and $0.15. By comparison, Square offers merchants the choice between a 2.75 percent per-transaction fee or a flat $275 monthly charge, with no processing fee or additional costs, while PayPal Here charges businesses a flat rate of 2.7 percent per credit card or PayPal transaction.

Groupon presents daily bargains from retailers and restaurants in 48 countries worldwide. Mobile devices now account for one-third of Groupon's North American transactions, up 35 percent year-over-year--in May, founder and CEO Andrew Mason told investors that Groupon mobile shoppers spend about twice as much as their desktop counterparts. Independent analyst Rocky Agrawal, an outspoken Groupon critic, praised the company's move into mobile payment processing, telling Reuters that GrouponPayments "fills some of the holes in Square's model. Nice job."

Groupon nevertheless faces an uphill battle against Square and PayPal. As of June 2012, more than 2 million businesses and individuals across the U.S. are using the Square service, up from 1 million just six months earlier--this week, the startup said it is now processing more than $8 billion in payments on an annualized basis, compared to $1 billion just a year ago. In addition, more than 300,000 merchants in the U.S. and Hong Kong have signed up for PayPal Here since the service launched this past March, with PayPal on pace to handle a combined $10 billion in payment transactions this year across all of its mobile initiatives.

3. Report: Apple fixes iPhone SMS spoofing flaw with iOS 6

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) new iOS 6 reportedly fixes an SMS security flaw discovered in the previous version of the mobile operating system.

Last month, a French hacker calling himself "pod2g" identified an iOS loophole enabling scammers to spoof their identities and transmit malicious text messages that appear to originate from banks or other trusted sources. According to pod2g, the spoofing flaw was a byproduct of the process that converts text messages to the Protocol Description Unit mode for delivery--security experts added the flaw is not present across rival Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone and Symbian devices.

Apple Insider reports iOS 6, released to consumers Wednesday, patches the SMS spoofing flaw and dramatically upgrades security across the platform. It was uncertain whether Apple would address the issue: "Apple takes security very seriously," it said in a statement last month, but instead of disclosing what steps it would take to remedy the situation, the company suggested that its over-the-top iMessage solution presents a safer alternative to conventional messaging tools.

"When using iMessage instead of SMS, addresses are verified which protects against these kinds of spoofing attacks," said Apple. "One of the limitations of SMS is that it allows messages to be sent with spoofed addresses to any phone, so we urge customers to be extremely careful if they're directed to an unknown Web site or address over SMS."

Apple introduced iMessage in Oct. 2011, concurrent with the launch of its iOS 5 operating system update. The service enables users to send free text messages, photos and videos among all iOS devices. Despite the introduction of over-the-top services like iMessage, Facebook, Skype and Twitter, 91 percent of U.S. smartphone owners still actively use SMS, according to a survey conducted this spring by Vanson Bourne on behalf of mobile messaging firm Acision.

4. comScore: Amazon, eBay lead all retailers on mobile commerce traffic

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Four out of five U.S. smartphone owners accessed retailer websites or applications on their devices in July 2012, with Amazon and eBay generating more mobile traffic than any other merchants.

Research firm comScore reports 85.9 million total U.S. smartphone users aged 18 and older accessed retail content in July: Amazon led all destinations with an audience of 49.6 million unique visitors, representing 46.6 percent of smartphone owners, followed by eBay at 32.6 million visitors and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) at 17.7 million. Walmart led all traditional brick-and-mortar retailers with 16.3 million smartphone visitors, ahead of Target (10 million) and Best Buy (7.2 million).

comScore adds that seasonal activities are influencing mobile shopper trends: Ticketmaster attracted 5.7 million smartphone users in July as the summer concert schedule ramped up, while home improvements fueled visits to Home Depot (4.4 million visitors) and rival Lowe's (3.2 million).

Retail Properties by Unique Smartphone Visitors July 2012
  All Smartphones
Total Unique Visitors (000) % Reach
Retail Category 85,905 80.6%
Amazon Sites 49,636 46.6%
eBay 32,583 30.6%
Apple 17,684 16.6%
Wal-Mart 16,295 15.3%
Target 10,041 9.4%
Best Buy 7,177 6.7%
Ticketmaster 5,699 5.3%
CVS 4,468 4.2%
The Home Depot 4,353 4.1%

(Total U.S. Smartphone Subscribers Age 18+ on iOS, Android and RIM Platforms)
Source: comScore Mobile Metrix 2.0

While men and women represented roughly equal numbers of retail visitors across both smartphones and the desktop, comScore reports that females accounted for 56.1 percent of all retail minutes on mobile and 53.4 percent on PCs. Smartphone shoppers are typically younger than their desktop counterparts, with 70.7 percent of mobile retail visitors under age 45, compared to 61.1 percent on the desktop. In addition, subscribers 45 and younger generate nearly three in every four minutes of shopping on smartphones, as opposed to 61.6 percent of retail minutes on desktops.

Smartphone shopping audiences also originate from higher-income households than desktop audiences. Close to 33 percent of all smartphone owners accessing retail destinations hail from households with annual incomes in excess of $100,000, compared to 23.8 percent of desktop shoppers. In addition, shoppers from households with incomes of $75,000 and up account for 48.1 percent of all minutes spent on mobile retail sites and apps.

5. Fandango extends mobile movie ticketing to Apple's Passbook app

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Fandango is extending its Mobile Ticket service to Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) Passbook, the new iOS 6 application that collects users' movie passes, transit cards, retailer loyalty punchcards and related documents.

Fandango - Passbook

Fandango users can now purchase paperless tickets sent to their phones as scannable barcodes.

The Fandango movie ticketing platform enables consumers to purchase paperless passes sent to their phones as scannable barcodes. iPhone and iPod users can now add Mobile Ticket purchases directly to the Passbook app, then show their iOS device screen to the ticket taker upon arrival at their local cinema, bypassing the box office line in the process.

More than 2,600 theaters across the U.S. support the Mobile Ticket service, and mobile transactions now account for close to 30 percent of overall Fandango sales, increasing 116 percent year-over-year during the lucrative 2012 summer movie season. Fandango adds that downloads of its native mobile applications have also increased 43 percent since this time last year and now exceed 26 million.

Apple rolled out iOS 6 to consumers Wednesday. In addition to Passbook, the revamped mobile operating system promises deep integration with Facebook and introduces a new Maps platform built in-house as a replacement for Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Maps data.

SPOTLIGHT ON... Google enhances Maps for Android with cross-device syncing

Google released a new version of its Maps for Android application that syncs with the user's search and directions history across all of their other devices. "When you start to type a place or directions into the search box on your Android device, you'll see suggestions for directions and locations that you've previously searched for--making it easier to quickly find directions on the go," explains Google Maps software engineer Keiji Maekawa. "You can also see your mapping search history, as well as your directions history, on your Android phone by going to the 'Search' or 'Directions' tab under My Places. This way, places and businesses you have already searched for will show up in your suggestions to save you time when you're out and about." As in previous iterations of Google Maps for Android, users may also set locations like 'Home' and 'Work' to more quickly access directions to those destinations. Google states that millions of users access Maps for Android each day--as of earlier this year, the service has provided 50 billion kilometers of turn-by-turn directions. Blog
