Five features to expect from iOS 7

By Mike Dano Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Mike Dano

As the iPhone 5 heads into the history books as one of the world's most successful smartphones, I'm betting the Apple product machine is deep into work on the next big thing (possibly the iPad Mini? Or the Apple TV set?). While pundits often focus on what the next iPhone will look like, just as important is what new features will be added to Apple's newest version of iOS.

But to get a sense of what's in store for iOS 7, it's worth taking a look back at iOS 1 (before it was even called iOS). The first version of Apple's operating system didn't support third-party apps, it didn't offer multitasking and it didn't include any speech-recognition services. Today iOS offers all those things, and in many cases the addition of features to iOS has been partially in response to competitive pressures. For example, Apple added multitasking to iOS in 2010 after Android vendors including Motorola and others used the lack of multitasking in iOS as a competitive wedge. And Apple's speech-to-text service (not Siri, specifically, but the ability to input text via speech) is virtually identical to the setup Google introduced to Android in 2009. And in iOS 6, Apple dropped mapping software provided by rival Google in favor of its own Maps app.

Thus, it's reasonable to assume that Apple has been carefully watching the competitive smartphone landscape in order to maintain parity with competitors in terms of iOS features and functions, as well as to protect its own interests. The below list are the main features I expect Apple to add to the next version of iOS, iOS 7:

Offline maps. Apple has taken a beating due to user concerns that its refurbished, Google-free Maps app is not as useful as the previous, Google-powered version of Maps for iOS. Some users are arguing Apple's mapping database doesn't have as much information as Google's.

And in response, an Apple spokesperson said the company is "working hard to make the customer experience even better." I expect those improvements will be made gradually during the next several months.

However, for iOS 7, I would expect Apple to again ape Google with the release of offline iOS Maps, a feature Google introduced to its Android platform in June. The usefulness of offline maps is obvious to anyone who has relied on a smartphone map only to become lost due to connection problems. Offline maps solve this potentially critical situation by storing mapping information inside a user's phone instead of loading it through a wireless network. And since Apple no longer uses Google for mapping information, it could potentially add new mapping features, like offline maps, more quickly.

Live icons/widgets. I wrote last year about the potential for live icons or widgets in iOS, and I still believe it's a feature that Apple will eventually bring to iOS. Google has long offered home screen widgets, which display all kinds of information. Moreover, Microsoft has made its Windows Phone live tiles a key selling point for its own OS. Thus, I would expect Apple... continued

1. Samsung updates Galaxy S III to Android Jelly Bean, 15 more devices on tap

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Samsung Electronics is updating its flagship Galaxy S III smartphone to run Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) new Android 4.1 operating system, a.k.a. Jelly Bean, adding it will upgrade an additional 15 devices in the near future.

Samsung said the Android Jelly Bean update will initially roll out to consumers in Poland before expanding to other international destinations, adding "The availability and schedule of the software upgrade will vary by market and wireless carriers' requirements." Alongside core Android 4.1 features like Project Butter (a reworked UI engine), a revamped homescreen and Google Now, which includes personalized information such as local weather and traffic updates, Samsung is also integrating customized enhancements including a new Easy Mode offering widget-based access to users' favorite apps as well as a blocking mode that silences incoming calls, alerts and notifications.

Samsung plans to extend Android Jelly Bean to 11 additional smartphones: The Galaxy S II, Galaxy S II LTE, Galaxy Note, Galaxy S Advance, Galaxy Chat, Galaxy Ace 2, Galaxy Ace Plus, Galaxy Beam, Galaxy Mini 2, Galaxy Music and Galaxy S Duos. The manufacturer also will upgrade four tablets: The Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and Galaxy Note 10.1.

Last week, Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) updated its Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone to run Android Jelly Bean. Rival Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) also pushed the update to its Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S 4G devices earlier this month.

Google's Android Developers dashboard reveals that only 1.2 percent of devices currently run Jelly Bean. Its predecessor Android 4.0, dubbed Ice Cream Sandwich, now powers 20.9 percent of devices, while 57.5 percent of devices still run Android 2.3, a.k.a. Gingerbread.

2. Facebook, Bango team on carrier billing for mobile payments

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) is now accepting mobile payments in the U.S., U.K. and Germany, enabling users to purchase digital content and charge transactions directly to their monthly wireless bill.

Bango-Facebook

Facebook users can now purchase in-app goods like virtual currencies in a single click.

Facebook is rolling out the new mobile Web billing service in partnership with digital commerce and analytics firm Bango. The two companies initially announced their alliance this February, although the terms of the agreement were not previously disclosed.

In June, Facebook unveiled a more streamlined operator billing process for mobile Web applications, trimming the payments flow from as many as seven steps down to two--Bango tells The Next Web that the difference between the June announcement and today's news is that the service was previously available for developers to build around, but "now we're actually live for Facebook users to buy things and charge the cost to their phone bill."

According to Bango, Facebook users can now purchase in-app goods like virtual currencies in a single click, a process that eliminates the need for premium SMS messages or entering credit card information. Bango notes that its payment platform delivers an average purchase conversion rate of 77 percent, compared to 40 percent across rival mobile payment solutions. The company also supplies billing and analytics services for partners including Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM), Amazon, MasterCard, EA Mobile and Opera Software.

Facebook first vowed to simplify mobile Web billing practices at February's Mobile World Congress event. "The payments experience is broken for end users," Facebook CTO Bret Taylor said at that time. "We're unlocking the business potential of the mobile Web." Facebook and Bango plan to roll out the new carrier billing option to additional international markets in the weeks ahead.

In-app payments represent just one facet of Facebook's efforts to monetize its mobile platform. Last week, the social networking giant began trialing mobile advertisements across selected third-party iOS and Android applications, introducing banner and interstitial ads that direct consumers to mobile websites or app stores based on their profile and social media activities. Facebook is on pace to generate close to $73 million in mobile ad revenues this year--about 2.8 percent of the U.S. mobile ad market--according to research firm eMarketer. Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) currently dominates the segment, controlling 55 percent of the U.S. market.

Facebook reported net losses of $157 million in the quarter ending June 30, its first as a public company, and vowed to right the ship with the introduction of new and improved mobile experiences. Facebook now boasts 955 million monthly active users worldwide, and 59 percent of that audience accesses the platform via mobile device. In addition, the number of Facebook users who accessed the site exclusively via mobile increased to 102 million in the second quarter, a 23 percent quarter-over-quarter leap.

3. Amazon launches Device Targeting to slash Android app catalog fragmentation

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Amazon is introducing Device Targeting, enabling its Appstore for Android developer partners to tailor APKs (the file format used to distribute and install software onto Android devices) for specific smartphones and tablets.

"While it is easy to support optional APIs and device capabilities within a single binary, you may decide that it is easiest for your apps to generate different binaries for the Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD," Amazon's Mobile App Distribution Blog states. "For each title, you can now offer separate APKs for Kindle Fire, Kindle Fire HD 7", Kindle Fire HD 8.9" and general Android (all non-Amazon) devices."

According to Amazon, Device Targeting eliminates the need for developers to offer multiple versions of the same application, consolidating all download metrics, reviews and page views in a single app and improving the title's search and relevancy rankings. In addition to reducing catalog fragmentation, Device Targeting also promises to minimize consumer confusion by directing them to the app version appropriate for their particular device.

"Say a customer owns both a Kindle Fire HD device and an Android mobile phone," Amazon explains. "The customer downloads or purchases one of your apps on their Kindle Fire HD device. When the customer moves to their Android mobile phone, the correct APK is delivered based on screen and size density, OpenGL compression format, and API version--a by-device optimized customer experience. Customers will appreciate not having to sort the differences between Kindle Fire and regular editions of your app." For more on implementing Device Targeting, click here.

Amazon Appstore for Android opened to U.S. consumers in March 2011, promising a user experience rooted in the company's e-commerce and marketing expertise--last month, Amazon expanded the storefront to the U.K., Germany, France, Italy and Spain, enabling developers to target international consumers via localized storefronts customized for each nation's audience.

Amazon recently announced that the number of developers building apps for Appstore for Android has more than doubled over the last year, crediting the growth to monetization features like its signature 1-Click Purchasing mechanism and in-app purchasing options. The digital commerce giant adds that the average in-app transaction now yields more than twice the revenue of the average premium app purchase.

4. American Express, Starbucks pledge support for Apple's Passbook app

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

American Express and Starbucks are the latest Fortune 500 companies to confirm support for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) Passbook, the new iOS 6 application that collects users' movie tickets, transit passes, retailer loyalty cards and related documentation.

While American Express will not support Passbook-based purchases, iOS device users can receive real-time updates on account transactions, view balance details and access customer service information. "This is an entirely new use-case for Pass that makes it useful every day, and not just for specific occasions," an AmEx spokesperson told VentureBeat via email.

In a Twitter post published late last week, Starbucks vowed it will update its iOS app with Passbook integration by the end of this month. The app connects to the user's prepaid Starbucks Card account, enabling consumers to pay for their order by holding their iPhone in front of a countertop scanner and processing the app's on-screen barcode. The mobile payment service is available across all 7,000 company-operated Starbucks stores in the U.S. as well as more than 1,000 Target locations, and it accounts for more than 1 million transactions every week.

Passbook formally launched last week in conjunction with iOS 6, which ships preloaded on Apple's new iPhone 5 and is also available for download across a host of earlier iOS devices. In addition to American Express and Starbucks, brands including American Airlines, United Airlines, Fandango, Major League Baseball, Walgreens, Ticketmaster and Live Nation have all committed to Passbook support.

5. GetJar CEO: Only 0.1% of apps generate 50% of downloads

By Sandhya Raman Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

While securing a spot on the coveted top paid, free or grossing app lists may mean pay day for the few developers who make it, most developers won't get anywhere close.

Speaking at a panel at GigaOM's Mobilize conference, GetJar CEO Chris Dury revealed that one-tenth of 1 percent of apps generate over half of all app downloads--but he said there is hope for unknown developers to gain traction.

Ouriel Ohayon, co-founder of mobile marketing platform Appsfire, said the one of best things for app stores to do to encourage organic app discovery would be to do away with top charts altogether.

Ohayon suggested that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) could improve its App Store by separating games from other apps, noting there are 25 different app categories. "Games are by far most of the catalog. Separating them would be a good way to get the other categories to pop up," he said.

"The second thing would be to kill the charts so people would go to other discovery mechanisms in the store," he added.

Tomer Kagan, co-founder and CEO of app discovery firm Quixey, agreed and highlighted the need for Apple to be a more open platform. Top app charts "are very detrimental. ... Very few apps have ever made it to the charts," added Kagan.

On the Android side, Ohayon stated that Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Play could be vastly improved by introducing an affiliate program. This, he explained, would encourage outlets to cover apps and link back to Google Play.

Instagram success paves way for photo, video app growth

By Sandhya Raman

Facebook's $715 million acquisition of photo manipulation app Instagram in April caused a fury among app developers specializing in photo apps. A month later, Facebook scooped up the development team behind Lightbox, another photo editing app that allows Android devices users to take and share photos across multiple social media platforms. This week, Google, in an effort to differentiate itself in the fiercely competitive OS market, acquired Nik Software, which makes the iOS photo sharing application Snapseed.

Click the chart above to view a larger version on the Web.

Instagram boasts a hefty 80 million iOS and Android users, with another 9 million iOS device owners using Snapseed. These numbers aren't static either. Instagram regularly records more than 100,000 new installs every day.

Instagram's success, in part, comes from its ability to provide both photo editing technology and social networking. In August, mobile analytics firm Distimo published a report that measured relative downloads of social networking apps using Facebook as a benchmark.

The graph above shows that Instagram garnered more downloads than Facebook in several countries in July.

With Facebook and Google, two mobile powerhouses, investing in photo editing technology, and last week's announcement of the iPhone with its new 8-megapixel camera, the market for mobile photo apps doesn't... continued
