Sprint, Ericsson hashing out small cell contract details Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) is negotiating to add Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) to its list of small cell equipment suppliers, according to a top executive with the carrier. Sprint announced in August that it would deploy Alcatel-Lucent's (NASDAQ: ALU) lightRadio metrocell architecture gear as well as Samsung's small cell gear throughout its footprint. Both are suppliers for Sprint's Network Vision infrastructure project as is Ericsson. When the August small cell contracts were announced Ericsson was missing from Sprint's list of small cell suppliers. That is apparently about to change, however. "We have, as you have heard, inked one relationship with ALU (Alcatel-Lucent) and one relationship with Samsung, and we're able to use them to cover the entire country. We are also in discussions with Ericsson as well, but we don't have an agreement in place yet as we're still working out the details, Iyad Terazi, Sprint Nextel vice president of network development and engineering, told FierceBroadbandWireless. Sprint is moving aggressively to deploy indoor picocells to boost coverage and capacity for its nascent LTE network. "These are smaller, lighter LTE picos that will plug directly into our core network. They're aimed at indoor end applications, even though they do have outdoor form factors as well, if you want to plug them on the outside of the building," said Terazi. However, he said the outdoor market is much more challenging for small cell deployments because of issues involving interference, backhaul and rights of way/property rights. For that reason, Terazi does not expect to see mass deployments of outdoor small cells prior to 2014. Sprint has been a leader in small cell deployment, seeing it as a way to expand its network cost effectively and help it continue offering unlimited data pricing for smartphones, which has been a key differentiator for the operator. "We've been very vocal about transitioning the industry in this space because of our focus on scaling the cost and continuing to provide unlimited, which is really where this passion around this comes from. We are finding more ways to deploy more networks faster, cheaper, better so we can maintain our unlimited plans and give customers what they want. Ultimately that's what drives this strategy for us more than anything else," he said. Airvana supplies Sprint's 3G CDMA femtocells. In July Sprint revealed in an FCC filing that it had 950,000 femtocells operating on its network. The operator is also getting into 3G enterprise femtocells, which are being supplied by Ubee-Airwalk. Enterprise femtos can handle 30 simultaneous users and are specifically targeted toward small businesses."We have a few hundred of them deployed right now, and we expect to do thousands of them," said Terazi. "The femto and the e-femto product are fairly mature today around 3G. We will over time potentially add 4G in them, especially for the consumer device, but we will also focus on a 4G-only pico that obviously has higher power, higher capacity. And we are looking to combine the two of them next to each other so we can keep the form factors simple, the deployment strategy simple and implementable," he said. Verizon's iPhone 5 unlocked, just needs SIM for AT&T service Verizon Wireless' (NYSE:VZ) version of Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 5 is being sold GSM-unlocked, meaning it can easily be switched to the mobile network operated by the nation's second-largest mobile operator, AT&T (NYSE:T), via the insertion of a compatible SIM card. | | The iPhone 5 | Verizon, the largest U.S. mobile operator by subscribers has apparently opted to ship all of its iPhone 5 smartphones GSM-unlocked, with representatives confirming as much to PC Mag and CNET. Making the device work on AT&T's HSPA+ network involves cutting down a standard AT&T SIM card or getting a nano SIM from AT&T that will fit directly into the phone's SIM slot. The operation should be the same for a user who wants to get a Verizon iPhone 5 to work on T-Mobile USA's 1900 MHz GSM or HSPA+ networks. T-Mobile last week unveiled HSPA+ service on its 1900 MHz PCS spectrum in Las Vegas, the first full market where it has refarmed the 1900 MHz frequencies it was using solely for GSM to open them up for HSPA+ service. T-Mobile is the only national U.S. mobile operator that is not selling the iPhone 5. An AT&T customer could be tempted to buy a Verizon iPhone 5 in order to gain more LTE international roaming possibilities. But no U.S. LTE operators have apparently signed any LTE roaming agreements, making the value of LTE roaming capability a moot point at this time. Technically, Verizon's iPhone 5 permits global LTE roaming, while AT&T's defaults to 3G once the phone is taken outside of the United States or Canada. That's because Verizon's iPhone 5 supports five LTE bands compared to AT&T's two, noted PC Mag. However, Verizon's version does not support LTE bands used in Canada. According to Apple, the iPhone 5 GSM model A1428 sold by AT&T supports WCDMA/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA at 850, 900, 1900 and 2100 MHz; GSM/EDGE at 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz and LTE in Bands 4 and 17. According to FCC documents unearthed by ExtremeTech, the AT&T device also supports LTE in the 1900 MHz PCS band and the cellular band at 800/850 MHz. Verizon's CDMA model A1429 supports CDMA EV-DO Rev. A and Rev. B at 800, 1900 and 2100 MHz; WCDMA/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA at 850, 900, 1900 and 2100 MHz; GSM/EDGE at 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz; and LTE Bands 1, 3, 5, 13 and 25. In addition, the CDMA iPhone 5 sold in the United States by Verizon as well as Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) does not support simultaneous voice and data services. Apple has said it can support in a single radio design simultaneous voice and data on GSM-based 3G and LTE networks but not networks that use CDMA for voice and LTE for data. Boeing to enable in-flight Wi-Fi and cell phone connectivity on new 747s and 777s Aircraft manufacturer Boeing announced that by the end of 2013 it will be installing advanced communications connectivity systems on its 747-8 and 777 jet airliners during production. The planned systems can be used to enable in-flight cell phone use, Wi-Fi connectivity for passengers, Internet access using in-flight entertainment and live television broadcasts. Boeing is also evaluating additional connectivity for its 737 model, which already includes wiring provisions for connectivity systems. In addition, the 787 is expected to include a full set of connectivity offerings as part of its standard catalog by the end of this year. That aircraft model currently offers post-delivery retrofit of systems that provide in-flight use of personal cell phones and Wi-Fi connectivity for passengers. Wireless media streaming is expected to be available on all new Boeing airplanes in 2014. "Passengers want the option of staying connected to e-mail and the Internet and other online offerings when flying. We've looked across the industry and are partnering with several connectivity system providers across our family of airplanes," said Mike Sinnett, senior chief engineer of airplane systems for Boeing Commercial Airplanes. The prime connectivity systems currently in development at Boeing are the Panasonic Global Communication Suite and Thales TopConnect system. TV white space rules prompt new wireless mic registration system A new unlicensed wireless microphone registration system is aimed at protecting those devices from any interference caused by other devices operating in the TV white space spectrum located between unused broadcast TV channels. Back in September 2010, the FCC approved the use of unlicensed TV white space spectrum in a 5-0 vote that came nearly two years after the agency first approved the use of the spectrum for wireless broadband applications. However, the original 2008 order was widely challenged by broadcasters, church groups and singer Dolly Parton, all of whom argued such use of the spectrum could interfere with TV stations and wireless microphones. The new microphone registration system is a nod to those parties' concerns. The FCC's Office of Engineering and Technology (OET) and Wireless Telecommunications Bureau said in a public notice that its new registration system will enable qualifying parties to register major event/production venues with the TV bands database systems so that operations of unlicensed wireless microphones and other low power auxiliary station devices at specified times will be protected from potential interference caused by TV band devices (TVBDs). Spectrum Bridge and Ericsson's (NASDAQ:ERIC) Telcordia Technologies are the approved database administrators for unlicensed microphone registrations. Registration of unlicensed wireless microphones is available only in certain limited cases, such as "major sporting events," "live theatrical productions/shows" and other "major events where large numbers of wireless microphones will be used and cannot be accommodated in the available channels," said the FCC. Currently, the new system is registering venues in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and Washington, D.C. "Focusing registration at this time on one region of the country will enable us to validate that the registration system is working properly and qualifying operators can register their venues as intended. Once we determine that the system is functioning properly, we will open up registrations for all of the other regions of the country," said the commission, adding it expects to open up registration across the country later in the fall. Wireless microphones and other low power auxiliary devices are allowed to operate on unused channels in the UHF and VHF frequency bands used by broadcast television (TV channels 2-51, except channel 37) on both a licensed and an unlicensed basis. WiMAX provider Mobile Beacon offers free Wi-Fi service Clearwire (NASDAQ:CLWR) partner Mobile Beacon promoted its WiMAX service by offering free Wi-Fi in Central Falls, R.I.'s Jenks Park during the city's Bright Future Festival. "We hope to be able to provide the city with a long-term solution to keep this service available in Jenks Park, making it a true hotspot that the community can benefit from year-round," said Katherine Messier, managing director of Mobile Beacon. Though the gratis Wi-Fi service was available for use by all attendees at the public event, Mobile Beacon provides its WiMAX-based Internet service exclusively to nonprofit, government and educational organizations across the country via broadband technology assistance grants. During the festival, Mobile Beacon demonstrated how its WiMAX service can help improve safety and security through the use of IP-based high-definition security cameras, a remote monitoring system and real-time access to information. Through an agreement with Clearwire, Mobile Beacon provides high-speed data services and mobile Internet access to educational and nonprofit organizations. Wi-Fi enabled LiFx light bulb raises over $1M Though naysayers question whether the LiFx (pronounced life-ex) LED light bulb will ever come to market, and, if it does, whether it will work as promised, the Wi-Fi enabled device already managed to raise more than $1 million in its first week on Kickstarter. The LiFx offers such unique features as smartphone control via Wi-Fi (after one follows a 12-step process to connect LiFx to a Wi-Fi network) and the ability to create the colors to match any mood or decor, get notifications from Twitter, Facebook, texts and more, reduce energy consumption and save money, visualize music with animated colors and much, much more, according to its Aussie creators. The bulb is also supposed to last for 25 years. Felix Salmon, who blogs for Reuters, earlier this year suggested that "Kickstarter was morphing into SkyMall for Vaporware" and uses the LiFx as proof that his fear is coming true. However, the product's backers are still racking up Kickstarter pledges, and their fundraising campaign is not due to expire until Nov. 14. See one blogger's gushing review of the concept here.
