Instagram success paves way for photo, video app growth Facebook's $715 million acquisition of photo manipulation app Instagram in April caused a fury among app developers specializing in photo apps. A month later, Facebook scooped up the development team behind Lightbox, another photo editing app that allows Android devices users to take and share photos across multiple social media platforms. And Google, in an effort to differentiate itself, recently acquired Nik Software, which makes the iOS photo sharing application Snapseed. While Instagram still commands the lion's share of the mobile photo market, is there room for new apps that capitalize on aspects of the photo app ecosystem that are either underserved or don't yet exist? Schmidt: Google isn't planning Maps for iOS Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt said the company has not taken any steps to submit a native mapping application for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS platform after Apple dumped Google Maps in favor of its own homegrown location services. Apple rolled out its own Maps effort last week as part of its new iOS 6 operating system upgrade. Consumers have since identified dozens of inaccuracies including missing roads, misplaced landmarks and mislabeled businesses, and some are already calling on Apple to restore native Google Maps functionality, even creating an online group called "Give Me Back My Google Maps." Speaking to reporters in Tokyo, Schmidt said Google and Apple are in constant communication "at all kinds of levels," but that any decision on Google Maps' return to iOS or approval of a native Google Maps app is in Apple's hands. "We have not done anything yet," Schmidt said, adding "We think it would have been better if they had kept ours. But what do I know? What were we going to do, force them not to change their mind? It's their call." Google Maps was a fixture on iOS devices since the first iPhone launched in mid-2007, but competitive tensions between the two mobile giants prompted Apple to dump preloaded Google services like Maps and YouTube from iOS 6. A native YouTube app for iOS was issued earlier this month, and Google Maps data remains available to iOS device owners through the Safari browser. "We want [Apple] to be our partner. We welcome that," Schmidt said. "I'm not going to speculate at all what they're going to do. They can answer that question as they see fit." Apple has so far shown no signs it plans to reverse course and maintains that Maps is a work in progress. "We are continuously improving it, and as Maps is a cloud-based solution, the more people use it, the better it will get," an Apple spokesperson said last week. "We appreciate all of the customer feedback and are working hard to make the customer experience even better." Apple also acknowledged the absence of key features like transit information and said it is working with developer partners to incorporate that data. Barnes & Noble launches multi-platform Nook Video service Barnes & Noble unveiled Nook Video, a new service enabling consumers to stream and download feature films and television programming to devices including the bookseller's Nook tablet as well as smartphones, tablets and connected TVs from other manufacturers. Launching in the U.S. later this fall and expanding to the U.K. market in time for the holiday season, Nook Video will offer films and original TV shows from partners including HBO, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Viacom, Warner Bros. Entertainment and Walt Disney Studios, with other content providers to follow. Titles will be available in both standard and high-definition formats, with all content stored in the cloud, enabling a consumer to begin watching a video on one supported device and continue his viewing experience on another device exactly where he left off. Barnes & Noble additionally will integrate Nook Cloud with DVD and Blu-ray discs encoded with the UltraViolet digital rights authentication system, enabling UltraViolet digital content playback across Nook devices and Nook Video apps as well as through third-party apps. Barnes & Noble did not divulge pricing for any Nook Video services. The launch of Nook Video promises to escalate Barnes & Noble's ongoing tablet rivalry with Amazon, which revealed its new Kindle Fire HD tablets earlier this month. The devices offer access to more than 22 million Android applications, games, e-books, movies, TV shows, songs, audiobooks and magazines. According to iSuppli data published last month, Amazon controls 4.2 percent of the worldwide tablet market, ahead of Barnes & Noble at 1.9 percent but far behind Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad at 69.6 percent. Survey: Developers believe mobile-first startup could topple Facebook Two-thirds of mobile developers believe a mobile-first social startup could disrupt Facebook's (NASDAQ:FB) dominance over the social networking segment, according to a new survey conducted by Appcelerator and research firm IDC. | | Click to view the full chart. Source: Appcelerator/IDC | Sixty-six percent of developers surveyed state it is "likely to very likely" that a mobile-first social startup will upend the market for social-themed applications on mobile devices, stealing market share from Facebook in the process. Facebook has struggled to translate its social networking platform to mobile devices, and earlier this month, co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted "We've had a bunch of missteps on [mobile]. The biggest mistake we made as a company was betting too much on HTML5 instead of native... We burnt two years." Many companies still underestimate mobile's capacity for disrupting the marketplace, IDC contends. "Mobile has the power to reshape entire industries quickly," said IDC Vice President of Clients, Displays and Mobile Devices Bob O'Donnell. "Staying competitive isn't simply a matter of porting elements of an existing business model to mobile; rather, it requires re-envisioning traditional business models through a mobile lens." Developers also share Zuckerberg's disenchantment with HTML5: Those surveyed by Appcelerator and IDC express neutral feelings or dissatisfaction toward nearly every facet of the HTML5 platform, including user experience, performance, monetization, fragmentation, distribution control, timeliness of new updates and security issues. Developers report the highest satisfaction with HTML5's cross-platform development possibilities and timelines of updates. Developers remain bullish on Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS: Eighty-five percent of respondents are very interested in building apps for the iPhone and 83 percent express comparable enthusiasm for creating iPad apps. Developer interest in Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android has slipped since Appcelerator and IDC's second quarter survey, with 76 percent saying they are very interested in building Android smartphone apps and slightly less than 66 percent indicating strong interest in Android tablet apps. Research In Motion's (NASDAQ:RIMM) BlackBerry continues to lose developer mindshare: Just 9 percent of respondents said they are very interested in writing BlackBerry apps, an all-time low. Forty percent of developers expressed strong interest in BlackBerry as recently as the first quarter of 2011, underlining the platform's fall from grace. Huawei building mobile OS as backup against Android Chinese handset manufacturer Huawei confirmed it is building its own mobile operating system as a safety net in the event it must distance itself from Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android, which is the focus of patent disputes between Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and other smartphone makers. In an interview with Reuters, Huawei CEO Wan Biao said the company plans to augment its Android product range with devices running Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) forthcoming Windows Phone 8. "Whatever consumers like, we'll develop," Wan said. "We're also devoting resources into coming up with a phone operating system based on our current platform in case other companies won't let us use their system one day." Wan's comments follow just weeks after a Huawei spokesperson denied the company is working on its own OS. "Huawei will not be launching a proprietary operating system in the foreseeable future," Huawei Vice President of Corporate Media Relations Scott Sykes told Bloomberg earlier this month. "Our innovation strategy is governed by our commitment to open collaborations." Huawei is not the only handset maker exploring alternatives to Android. ZTE is collaborating with Mozilla to build smartphones based on the open-source software development initiative's fledgling Firefox OS. Earlier this month, Google halted Acer's plans to launch a smartphone running Chinese Internet giant Alibaba's Aliyun mobile operating system, citing software compatibility concerns. Just last month a jury awarded Apple a $1.05 billion victory against Samsung Electronics after determining that Samsung's Android devices infringed on a variety of Apple patents, including those covering the design of iOS-based smartphones and tablets along with related features and functions. Apple is widely expected to assert its patents against other Android smartphone makers as well. Nokia extends Life information app to new Asha smartphones Nokia (NYSE:NOK) introduced Life+, a Web-based free application that expands the handset maker's Life information services suite to its new Asha 308 and Asha 309 touchscreen smartphones. More than 76 million users have accessed the original Life service, which provides information on education, health and infotainment. The new Life+ promises a richer, Web-based experience leveraging the cloud-based Nokia Xpress Browser, which compresses Internet data up to 90 percent, translating to more efficient browsing. Nokia Life+ will initially roll out in an English-language version targeting 18 international markets including the U.S., U.K. and Ireland. The initial version of the app comprises two services: Life Skills (aimed at nurturing interpersonal skills, self-confidence and job hunting prowess among young people) and Live Healthy (which offers tips and trivia spotlighting nutrition, hygiene, fitness and illness prevention). Content partners include Reader's Digest, Madison Research and the Foundation for Social Change. Nokia will launch localized Life+ apps for consumers in India, China and Indonesia later this year. Nokia unveiled the Asha 308 and Asha 309 Tuesday. The Series 40-based smartphones promise a swipe-enabled user interface as well as an open environment for third-party application development, standalone Facebook and Twitter clients and 40 preloaded EA games. Both devices are expected to ship during the fourth quarter of 2012, priced around $99 each. How PayDragon lets shoppers skip the supermarket PayDragon is a different breed of mobile payment application. First launched this spring, PayDragon initially rolled out remote ordering and payment capabilities enabling restaurant and food truck customers to purchase meals prior to arrival, skipping register lines and avoiding long waits. PayDragon 2.0, introduced earlier this month for Apple's iOS and Google's Android, extends the app's emphasis on simplicity and efficiency to the supermarket shopping process: A new Checkout feature enables consumers to buy snacks, household goods and other non-perishable goods from their home, office or wherever they are, without ever stepping foot inside their local store. Once the one-click checkout process is complete, PayDragon sends that exact brand and variety directly to any non-P.O. box address in the continental U.S. via free, two-day shipping.
